Red Roses duo launch national campaign

Red Roses duo launch national campaign

South Wales Argus15 hours ago

Having introduced crochet to her teammates during the 2022 Women's Six Nations, Dow is revelling in the opportunity to combine the hobby with rugby the purpose of inspiring and uniting the nation alongside one of her most dedicated students in Heard.
'I'm really excited to be part of it,' said Dow, speaking at the initiative's launch at Hazelwood in Sunbury-on-Thames. 'It's an opportunity to get diversity in hobbies and showing that anyone can support rugby and be part of the sport.
'It's a family event and an opportunity for people to pick up a hobby and combine it with sport to show off their personalities.
'Crochet has stereotypes but we deal with that in rugby as well in terms of who you have to be to be a rugby player and we're showing that it's not just a male space but a space where anyone can get involved.
'There are so many parts in life where that's true and crochet is a perfect example. Anyone can pick up a ball of yarn and a hook and start making whatever they want.
'It's the same in rugby, you can pick up a rugby ball and start playing and having fun the way you want.
Heard added: 'Crochet is quite a niche hobby but a lot of us Red Roses are interested in it so to be able to have this campaign heading into the World Cup is exciting.
'Abby's big on crocheting and quite good at it and thought it'd be quite relaxing so she has taught me and a few of the other girls in the 6 Nations and I just liked it.
'It'll be really cool to see people getting on board and getting behind us heading into a home world cup. To have people supporting us whether that's in crochet or any other craft is exciting and will be a good boost to us as a squad.
'It's really cool to be a part of something, whether that's crochet or rugby. Being part of a community is huge and making people feel like they're part of something where they can make friends is really important, whether that's through crochet or rugby or any other crafts and hobbies.'
Dow learnt to crochet during the first national lockdown in 2020 and quickly fell in love with the craft.
Red Roses tradition dictates that a member of the playing squad receives a real red rose for getting a first cap, but with the gift difficult to preserve when away on tour, Dow has taken it upon herself to crochet gifts for players reaching special milestones; a red rose for first caps, silver for 50 and gold for 100.
But she insists that her gifts only scratch the surface of what you can achieve with crochet, with the craft lending itself to the creation of almost anything you can set your mind to.
She added: 'With crochet, I thought I could just make something and the rest was history.
'You can't kill a crochet flower and my love language is gift-giving so it's a really easy gift to show someone that I like them.
'Flowers don't take long to make and you get a quick sense of accomplishment because of that so lots of people took it up.
'It's an easy way to switch off from the rugby and the noise and the pressure and there are different disciplines and things you can do in crochet, like granny squares, clothing, toys, flowers or hairbands.
'You can go so far into it and it's really nice going into different disciplines and seeing what people do.'

Peter Wright and Gary Anderson out to upset the odds as Snakebite sends Scotland World Cup warning to darts rivals

Old boys Wright and Anderson are hunting success in Germany as they chalk up an eighth appearance at the event Proud Peter Wright reckons it's scary to be gunning for World Cup glory again with Scotland. Snakebite and Gary Anderson chalk up an eighth appearance at the event tonight when they start their bid for glory against Netherlands. ‌ Wright has won it twice in the past in 2019 and 2021 and believes the old darts codgers still have the ability to claim the title. ‌ He said: 'It's amazing and scary as well. When you are up on that stage representing your country, you are more nervous in this tournament than any other. "I don't know how Gary feels but I'm sure he is as well. There's so much pressure and he always puts me first to throw as well! 'Gary is playing really well at the moment, he is in a happy place. I'm getting there and in this tournament I will prove that. "Me and Gaz have got plenty of experience in the World Cup and I'm thinking we will do really well. "I don't think anyone will be talking about us to be honest. 'We're just the two old codgers that want to play darts still. But I think we can upset a lot of them. ‌ "If we turn up, everyone will be in trouble.' England's star duo Luke Littler and Luke Humphries are heavy favourites, but Wright said: 'They have not just been talking about the two Lukes, they've been talking about the Wales team as well. Gezzy [Price] and Jonny [Clayton], they are brilliant. When they have won it in the past, they have played exceptional. ‌ 'The Ireland team as well, Josh [Rock] and Daryl [Gurney], the two youngsters, they are fearless. So, it will be dangerous. Obviously, there are a lot of teams that can come out the group stages and do a lot of damage.' Anderson doesn't know how many more he'll play and said: 'We have 110 years between us on that stage! 'We could still be in the top 16 of the rankings for the next couple of years, so we will just have to see how Peter goes and how my body holds up. "It's an honour. Even when I was in the BDO playing for Scotland it was great. 'Like I say now we feel like a pair of grandads now with the youngsters coming through. If we can click, we can give anyone a game of darts so fingers crossed.' 'I'm enjoying the ProTour and I am enjoying the Europeans that I am doing. So, if I was to be doing that on a Wednesday or Thursday they can be written off. I couldn't do that. "I'm more happy to play ProTour and the Europeans that I can get to quite easily. That's me in my comfort zone.'

MBE pair Luke Littler and Luke Humphries warned they won't be treated like royalty at World Cup of Darts

German duo Ricardo Pietreczko and Martin Schindler are gunning for the hot favourites in Frankfurt German duo Ricardo Pietreczko and Martin Schindler have warned England's MBE heroes they won't be treated like royalty in Frankfurt. The home pair are gunning for the World Cup of Darts hot favourites in Saturday's mammoth last 16 clash in their own country. ‌ Luke Humphries and Luke Littler go into the tournament having been recognised in the King's Birthday Honours for their contribution to the sport of darts. ‌ However, with Littler having previously had issues with whistling German crowds and vowing earlier this year never to return to Germany in a social-media outburst, the Frankfurt fans are ready to crank up the heat. Pietreczko said: 'I think it was a very funny game against both Lukes, because Luke Littler says never come back to Germany.' Schindler added: 'I think the fans are going to play a major role in that. If we are going to play against bigger nations, England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Netherlands or whoever, there are so many good names in it right now. "I think this probably is the best World Cup to be in and we are very happy about the support we are getting from the fans.' Humphries and Littler are flying going into it with Cool Hand saying: 'I'm extremely honoured and delighted to be receiving an MBE in the King's Birthday Honours for services to darts. "To be recognised by the King for what I have achieved, and also for my contribution to playing in and promoting the sport that I love, is something that I never thought possible, but I'm very grateful that it has become a reality. ‌ 'I have enjoyed the highest of highs in darts in becoming World No.1 and winning the biggest tournaments that the game has to offer, but to be awarded the MBE will rank alongside any of those achievements. "I have to give a massive thanks to my fiance Kayley, and my family, particularly my mum and dad, who have been a constant source of support over the years and helped make me the person that I am today. ‌ 'To say that I'm looking forward to visiting Buckingham Palace is an understatement. To receive the MBE there with my family with me is something that I'll cherish for the rest of my life. "I'll continue to be a good ambassador for darts and help pave the way for future generations to be involved and succeed in a sport that has given so much to me.' Littler added: 'This is an amazing and unexpected honour but one which I am very grateful for. ‌ "To receive a recognition like this is something I had never thought would be possible, and it is a proud moment. "It's unbelievable what I've done for my sport, I'm happy, my family is happy and I can't wait to receive it. 'Congratulations to Luke Humphries on receiving an MBE too. "He's a fantastic ambassador for darts and although he's a rival, I can't wait to partner him in the World Cup this weekend.'
