The latest reason to send a teen to summer camp? No cellphones.
There is one day that stands out among Kate Kubacki's favorite memories from summer camp. It happened two years ago, when she was 16; she was with a group of fellow teens in leadership training to become counselors at Camp Tecumseh YMCA in Brookston, Indiana.
'We were all together in the party room, just talking, hanging out, playing Uno, having so much fun,' Kubacki says. She looked around at her camp friends and thought: This is happening because no one is on their phone. 'I just sat there for a moment and I thought: Wow, we would never get this close; we would never have these random conversations about our schools or our favorite movies or these funny little moments,' she says. 'If we'd had our phones, we would have been on them.'

Squeezed by Crowds, the Roads of Central Park Are Being Reimagined
When Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux presented their design for New York City's Central Park — then called Greensward — in 1858, they designated spaces by speed. The park's traverses could handle crosstown carriages. Bridle paths were for foot traffic. And the drives would be treated as a promenade for all, split first between pedestrians, soon bicycles, and, later, cars. 'There should be separation of ways, as in parks and parkways, for efficiency and amenity of movement,' Olmsted wrote, 'and to avoid collision or the apprehension of collision, between different kinds of traffic.'
