After a thrilling finish to the 2024 world championship season, Formula 1 is back in action starting this weekend in Melbourne with the Australian Grand Prix.
Last season, Red Bull's Max Verstappen built a big lead to open the year and held on to win his fourth consecutive world championship. But steady improvement from McLaren earned the team its first constructors' championship since 1999.
'They are nothing like me': Lewis Hamilton loves Ferrari red, warns against comparisons
Six different drivers won the final eight races of 2024. Another year of similar regulations should mean close competition for race wins once again. Teams will be balancing trying to win this year and preparing for sweeping changes next year, adding another layer of intrigue.
The 2025 Formula 1 grid will feature many familiar faces in new places as well as new talents entering the sport. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton's made his much-anticipated move to Ferrari and Mercedes has signed rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli to take his place in 2025. Fellow rookies include Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls) and Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber) while Oliver Bearman (Haas) and Jack Doohan (Alpine) will be in full-time roles for the first time.
Here's everything you need to know about the 2025 Formula 1 season:
Formula 1 2025 title favorites
It was a close battle between drivers at Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes and McLaren for wins at the end of last season. It often came down to track-specific characteristics to tip the balance of power to one team or another.
After three days of testing ahead of the first race this season, it looks like McLaren is the car to beat at the top. Mercedes and Ferrari were very close in the battle for second-fastest in testing followed by Red Bull.
Lando Norris is the title favorite considering McLaren's status as reigning constructors champions and pre-season testing performance. But Verstappen, Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Hamilton and Mercedes' George Russell could all be in the fight at the front. Norris' teammate Oscar Piastri will likely be in contention for wins as well.
There's also a mid-season wrinkle that could change up the order. Formula 1 will be cracking down on flexible wings starting at the eighth race of the season in Spain. McLaren made the most of their flexible wings in 2024 and that change may bring them closer to the rest of the frontrunners.
It's shaping up to be a thrilling season as multiple drivers have realistic shots at winning a world championship.

Lewis Hamilton Champions Social Change in Talks with UK Prime Minister
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has been leading several social causes, including efforts to help create a more inclusive education system. As part of his Mission 44 initiative, he met with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer, to support the government in setting up a framework that would help students succeed in schools, regardless of their background. Mission 44 was set up four years ago to help students and ensure they don't face the same challenges Hamilton experienced in his school days. The Briton also met Secretary of State for Education Bridget Phillipson at 10 Downing Street to discuss reforms that could be introduced in the education system. The government of the UK revealed its commitment to the social cause by developing a framework that includes exploring ways to increase school funding across the board, improving mental support for students, and hiring more teachers in classrooms. Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain and Scuderia Ferrari on the grid during the F1 Grand Prix of Monaco at Circuit de Monaco on May 25, 2025 in Monte-Carlo, Prime Minister of the UK praised Hamilton's initiative after the meeting. He said: "I want to thank Lewis -- this was his idea, this is his legacy. He's inspired generations and is now using that influence on this project and is designed to make a real difference in the lives of young people across the country." Hamilton shared a post on Instagram, talking about his struggles at school and confirming the government's commitment to the initiative. He wrote: "The future of education must be inclusive. "Today, myself, @mission44, our partners, and some incredible students met with the UK Prime Minister for an important discussion on how we can make sure all young people are supported to succeed in school, regardless of their background. I struggled in school and never felt like my voice was heard, so I know firsthand that ensuring every student feels they belong in school is vital. "I'm grateful that off the back of this meeting, the government has committed to working with Mission 44 to enact change focused on making the education system more inclusive. I'm so proud of how far M44 has come in such a short space of time and the opportunity we have to transform the lives of vulnerable students across the country. "I encourage everyone to head to the Mission 44 website to find out more about today's announcement and support our work. We can create a fairer, more compassionate world, together." The Prime Minister replied to his post. He wrote: "Great to meet you today. Looking forward to working together to make sure every young person has the chance to thrive."

Montreal hopes to repair damaged reputation during Grand Prix weekend
MONTREAL — Montreal is hoping to redeem itself during the upcoming Grand Prix weekend after last year's event became a source of embarrassment. The city says it's taking steps to improve access to the Formula 1 site on a man-made island and to reduce congestion during the event, which begins June 13. The Montreal fire department also says it's working with restaurant owners to ensure they're ready for the influx of tourists. Fire inspectors caused an uproar last year when they abruptly ordered some restaurants to close their patios on one of the busiest evenings of the year. The 2024 Grand Prix weekend was also marred by flooding at the race site, traffic headaches and miscommunication. City officials are concerned this year about the possible impact of a transit strike that will affect bus and metro service before and after the event. Five of the last six Monaco GPs have been won by the driver who lined up at the front of the grid, the sole exception coming in 2022, when a downpour and a disastrous Ferrari pit stop conspired to deny Charles Leclerc. Advertisement So to shake things up a little, the drivers will have to make a minimum of two pit stops. It's a tweak that could have the desired effect, but only if the drivers make something of it. The backmarkers have an incentive to get both of their pit stops out of the way early, for instance, while teamwork could prove effective at the front, if one driver backs up the field while the other dives in for maintenance. The latter is a fascinating prospect from the perspective of McLaren and Ferrari. Oscar Piastri only qualified in 3rd but is leading the drivers' standings and looks a more convincing title contender than Norris, while Lewis Hamilton might not take too kindly to playing second fiddle his teammate, despite Leclerc's superb record here.
