
Petronas to Cut 10% of Workforce Amid Energy Transition
PETALING JAYA: Petronas announced last week a phased reduction of over 5,000 jobs over the next twelve months, sparking concerns over regional employment stability, economic resilience and investor confidence in the country's crucial oil and gas sector.
Although most of those affected will be contract staff, experts caution that the economic ripple of the layoffs could be significant, impacting not only workers but also communities and industries tied to Petronas operations.
Universiti Malaysia Kelantan entrepreneurship and business professor Datuk Dr Nik Maheran Nik Muhammad said the immediate consequence would be a rise in unemployment, particularly in areas where Petronas has a strong operational presence.
'In the long run, continued downsizing and automation may lead to underemployment and skills mismatch in
the sector.'
Nik Maheran also said with the abrupt displacement of contract workers, the gig and freelance economy is expected to see an uptick.
'Many may turn to ride-hailing services, digital platforms or small-scale entrepreneurship to sustain themselves.'
She added that while these roles offer flexibility, they often come with limited income security and little to no social protection.
She said although permanent positions remain intact for now, uncertainty is growing within the organisation.
'Morale could drop and highly skilled professionals might begin seeking opportunities abroad or shifting to other industries unless leadership provides clear reassurance.'
Nik Maheran said given the extensive links of Petronas to local vendors, logistics providers and support services, the impact of the layoffs would not be confined to the company alone.
She said SMEs that rely on Petronas contracts, support staff such as canteen workers and cleaners as well as Bumiputera entrepreneurs who constitute a significant portion of its vendor network, may be disproportionately affected.
She pointed out that the hardest-hit regions are expected to be Kerteh (Terengganu), Miri and Bintulu (Sarawak), and Pengerang (Johor), areas where Petronas has a strong economic footprint.
'Households dependent on Petronas-related income may reduce spending, which could trigger declines in retail, real estate and other local business revenues.
'Reskilling initiatives through HRD Corp and TVET programmes may need to be accelerated.'
She stressed that the issue goes beyond numbers.
'These job cuts aren't just statistics, they represent families and communities. It's time for government, industry and society to work together to build a more resilient and inclusive economy.'
Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia human resource management assoc prof Dr Abdul Rahim Zumrah emphasised the importance of clear and empathetic communication during such periods of uncertainty.
'Companies should hold assemblies or town halls to explain the reasons behind the layoffs, backed by data and long-term plans. When employees understand the rationale, it helps maintain morale and trust.
'Management should create space for employees to voice concerns and receive honest answers. This helps reduce anxiety and prevent speculation.
'Recognition, through formal letters or public appreciation, goes a long way. Companies should also consider former contract workers for future roles.'
He said laid-off workers still hold
valuable potential.
'Many have solid industry experience. With support from agencies like Mara and the National Entrepreneurial Group Economic Fund, they could transition into roles as consultants, trainers or entrepreneurs.'
Abdul Rahim said staff reductions could become unavoidable in times of crisis – whether economic, political or due to currency fluctuations.
'It's natural to seek job security, but we also need resilience and realism, both from employers and employees.'
Petronas on Tuesday reaffirmed its commitment to employee welfare amid a restructuring that would cut around 10% of its workforce, offering competitive separation packages.
The company said a comprehensive transition programme is in place to support affected staff, ensuring fair, respectful and professional decisions.

Budding technopreneurs have govt's full support, says Zahid
MELAKA: Students undertaking Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) should consider becoming technopreneurs, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister said TVET offers promising opportunities in the entrepreneurship sector. Government support is essential in realising such potential, he said. 'We are grateful for the growing trust of parents (in TVET) today. That is why we must find new ways to nurture and transform the mindset of TVET students into future technopreneurs.' Ahmad Zahid said to date, TVET institutions under Majlis Amanah Rakyat have produced 50 TVET millionaires. Speaking at the 2025 National TVET Day celebration, he said as Malaysia moves towards becoming a developed nation, the involvement of all parties in driving the country's progress must be properly coordinated. This is especially to help groups that are often seen as marginalised within the country's education system, he said. 'For instance, the National TVET Council has taken the responsibility to recruit huffaz students to join TVET so that their future can be better secured,' he said, Bernama reported. The Deputy Prime Minister cited examples, including huffaz students enrolled at Universiti Kuala Lumpur's aerospace and maritime affairs faculties as well as at Universiti Tenaga Nasional. 'The response has been quite good (from the huffaz) and we welcome their contributions to building this country,' he said.

Strengthening TVET reforms with commission set-up
MELAKA: A proposal to set up a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) commission is being mulled, in line with the broader TVET reform agenda, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said the recommendation emerged from impressive achievements under the National TVET Council chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, including a notable rise in student participation. 'I appreciate the council's work and as someone monitoring progress first-hand, there are proposals worth considering, among them establishing a commission for TVET. 'We shall assess how swiftly this can be implemented given current developments,' he said when launching the National TVET Day 2025 celebration. 'With the number of students and types of training increasing, I will look into whether current facilities are adequate and how to create synergy between government-linked companies, private sector players and existing TVET institutions.' The Prime Minister also underscored TVET's pivotal role in creating a skilled workforce capable of meeting future industrial needs. He said TVET graduates deserve a better starting salary, reflecting their skills and strong employability. 'Previously, we set the minimum wage at RM1,700. But for TVET fields with employment rates of up to 98%, such a salary is inadequate. 'We aim to increase the starting pay to RM3,000 where feasible,' he said, adding the adjustment would reflect deserved recognition by multinational and local companies. Anwar also said an additional RM40mil has been announced for the National TVET Council, along with RM10mil in aid for Melaka's TVET entrepreneurship initiatives. 'It is crucial for students to seize this opportunity to contribute to national development. 'Unlike many of our neighbours, Malaysia is one of the few nations that provides such strong support, financial and otherwise, for TVET students,' said the Prime Minister. The three-day National TVET Day includes nine sectoral exhibitions ranging from transportation, aerospace and electronics to agriculture, construction and services, with over 60 employers offering some 5,000 job opportunities.

The Singapore state investment company has joined AI Infrastructure Partnership, a group that also includes BlackRock's Global Infrastructure Partners, the slides showed. AIP, formed in September with a goal to initially invest more than $30 billion in AI-related projects, is one of the world's largest efforts to invest in data centres and energy facilities needed to power AI applications such as ChatGPT. It aims to mobilise up to $100 billion including debt financing for such investments, which will focus on the United States. Temasek's participation comes after the Kuwait Investment Authority joined AIP earlier in June. The sovereign wealth fund of Kuwait was the first non-founder financial anchor investor to join the consortium, which also counts partners including Nvidia and billionaire Elon Musk's xAI. "Temasek's investment in the AI Infrastructure Partnership reflects our focus on the big shifts and trends of the future," Ravi Lambah, Temasek's head of strategic initiatives, said in an email to Reuters. "AI is potentially the most transformative and impactful technology for all sectors and businesses," he added. Temasek did not disclose financial details of the investment. The global investment company had a net portfolio value of S$389 billion ($304 billion) as of March 31, 2024, according to its website.
