Watch: Migrants cling to overloaded small boat as over 1,000 cross Channel in one day

Independent4 days ago

Scores of migrants were filmed clinging to dangerously overloaded small boats on Saturday (31 March) on Saturday morning, as over 1,000 reportedly crossed the Channel in a single day.
In scenes described by defence secretary John Healey as 'pretty shocking', groups, including small children sat on adults' shoulders, waited in the waters for small boats to arrive at a beach in Gravelines, near Calais, before scrambling to get aboard. Some are seen still trying to get on to the boat after it had set off.
Healey has criticised French police, who were present on the beach but did not intervene, for a lack of action.

Now Pornhub ban spreads to EUROPE in row over under-18 access – and it includes two other major X-rated sites

PORNHUB has pulled out of France over objections to a new law requiring porn sites to verify the age of users. Aylo, the adult entertainment company that owns Pornhub, has announced it will block access to the site in France over the new rule. 6 6 The company claims the French law poses a privacy risk to users. The law could see users required to enter credit card details or other forms of official ID to verify their age. Aylo also runs other popular porn sites such as Youporn and RedTube - which will also now be unavailable in France. The company argues that device-based age verification is a better solution than requiring porn sites to police the age of users. Aylo's VP for Brand and Community Alex Kekesi said: "All it requires is that the government enforce regulations on three companies – Apple, Google and Microsoft – the three operating system manufacturers requiring age verification at the device level prior to accessing adult content. "The French government refuses to take this simple step and instead are focused on futile and entirely symbolic regulatory actions which are unenforceable, do not protect children and expose your private data." Pornhub is the world's most visited porn site, with France being one of its biggest markets. The website claims that France was its second biggest audience in 2024 after the United States. Kekesi added: "We've made the difficult decision to suspend access to our sites in France and instead use our platforms to speak directly to the French people. "French citizens deserve a government and a regulator who are serious about preventing children from accessing adult content. "They also deserve laws which protect their privacy and safeguard their sensitive data." Greenpeace activists swipe Emmanuel Macron waxwork from Paris's Grevin Museum before using it in anti-Russia protest- 6 French Gender Equality Minister Aurore Bergé posted on X that Aylo's decision meant there would be "less violent, degrading and humiliating content accessible to minors in France". She added: "Pornhub, Youporn, and RedTube refuse to comply with our legal framework and decide to leave. Good!" It comes after Aylo made similar moves to block access to its porn sites in several US states over age verification laws. So far, 19 US states have passed laws requiring porn sites to verify users's age. 6 The bans cover around one third of the US population. Methods of checking under these laws can include providing a government-issued ID or even scanning a user's face. It has seen many porn sites opt to block access to their pages rather than implement such verification systems. States that have implemented these laws include Texas, Florida, Arizona and Virginia. The European Commission has also launched an investigation into several adult websites - including Pornhub - over accusations they had not complied with regulations aimed at stopping minors accessing porn. The UK also has a law requiring platforms to have "robust" age checks in place by July. It is currently unclear whether the same porn platforms will also block access to their sites in Britain when this comes into force. 6

Spain vs France predictions: Nations League semi-final tips and odds

Our expert has three tips for Thursday's Nations League semi-final between Spain and France at the Stuttgart Arena, Germany (kick-off, 8pm BST). We think Spain can capitalise on France's defensive absentees. Spain vs France tips Spain to win @ 13/10 with Midnite Over 9.5 corners @ 10/11 with Midnite Nico Williams to have 1+ shot on target @ 3/4 with Midnite Odds courtesy of Midnite. Spain can expose weakened rivals Both Spain and France required penalties to progress to the Nations League semi-finals but La Roja look better equipped to win when the sides square up in Stuttgart. Spain are unbeaten in their last 18 matches and have not lost in the Nations League since September 2022, having won the most recent edition of the tournament. France won the Nations League in 2020-21 but they are not at full strength going into this semi-final with seven players having featured in the Champions League final and starting defenders Jules Kounde, William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano all out. Les Bleus have already lost to Croatia and Italy in this tournament and a fresher Spain are a worthwhile bet to win at 13/10. Expect a high corner count It was a case of possession with purpose for Spain when they won Euro 2024 and their more direct approach under Luis de la Fuente could contribute to a high corner count against France. Getting the ball to Barcelona star Lamine Yamal and Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams down the flanks is key to Spain's approach and they have averaged 5.6 corners per game in their last five matches. Having included the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Kylian Mbappe, Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola in their latest squad, France also like to play with width and only Portugal (57) have taken more corners in this competition than Les Bleus (56), so over 9.5 total corners looks a good pick. Williams can excel on left flank Yamal is obviously the star of the show for Spain but his team-mate Williams should not be underestimated. Williams leads the way for both shots (19) and shots on target (nine) for Spain in this season's Nations League, while he averaged 1.9 shots per game for Athletic Bilbao in La Liga this term. In the two-legged quarter-final with the Netherlands, Spain directed 43 per cent of their attacks down the left, so Williams should get plenty of the ball and is worth backing to have a shot on target.
