EWA Completes Solar Energy Project at Khalifa City Water Distribution Station

Daily Tribune19-03-2025

Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, President of the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), has announced the successful completion of a solar energy system installation at the Khalifa City water distribution station. The facility is now fully powered by renewable energy, with the capability to export surplus electricity to the national grid.
During an inspection visit to the station, Kamal bin Ahmed highlighted that the initiative is part of EWA's broader strategy to integrate solar energy systems across its facilities. The Khalifa City station is the eleventh EWA site to be equipped with solar power, reflecting the authority's commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.
He reiterated EWA's dedication to expanding sustainable energy solutions to support clean energy production, promote renewable energy adoption, and contribute to Bahrain's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These efforts align with the Kingdom's strategy to diversify energy sources, reduce carbon emissions, and increase the share of renewables in the national energy mix in line with Bahrain Economic Vision 2030.
The newly installed system consists of 2,032 solar panels placed on the station's underground reservoir rooftops, boasting a maximum production capacity of 1,400 kilowatts of clean electricity. The setup ensures that the station operates entirely on renewable energy. Additionally, the system is equipped with self-cleaning solar panels and integrated monitoring and control technology.
This milestone marks a significant advancement in Bahrain's environmental and economic sustainability efforts. It reinforces EWA's commitment to adopting global best practices in renewable energy and strengthens Bahrain's position as a regional leader in clean energy solutions.

EWA sign "Kafa'a" initiative implementation agreements

The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) signed implementation agreements for the first phase of the national programme 'Kafa'a', aimed at improving energy efficiency in government buildings. The agreements were signed with Saudi-based Quantum Energy Solutions and ESTA Middle East, both specialised in energy efficiency services. Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, President of EWA, emphasised that the initiative represents a strategic step in national efforts to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. He noted that the first phase targets energy efficiency upgrades in 12 government buildings, as part of a wider plan to cover 20 buildings during the current year. He added that the initiative is expected to save approximately 308 gigawatt-hours of electricity and reduce carbon emissions by nearly 154,000 tonnes by 2040, making it one of the Kingdom's flagship projects supporting the goal of carbon neutrality. The current phase includes buildings belonging to several ministries, including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Justice and Islamic Affairs, and the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA). EWA will oversee all stages of project implementation and monitor the outcomes to ensure the intended targets are met. This will be carried out in collaboration with specialised companies delivering the programme, to enhance energy efficiency in both public and private sector facilities, while achieving sustainable operational savings and reducing carbon emissions. Launched in December 2023, the 'Kafa'a' programme is a national initiative designed to reduce electricity consumption in both public and private sector buildings and consequently lower carbon emissions. The initial implementation phase targets 20 government buildings. BNA(R)

BDB Highlights the Impact of Its Farmers Market Initiative in Boosting Local Agriculture and Food Security

Bahrain Development Bank (BDB), the Kingdom's leading bank dedicated to supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), has released its latest insights on the impact of its Farmers Market initiative in Hoorat A'ali — a key platform driving local agriculture, empowering Bahraini farmers and families, and enhancing food security. This key initiative plays an essential role in providing direct, year-round access to a diverse selection of fresh, locally produced goods, offering farmers a valuable platform to grow their businesses and increase sales. The Farmers Market initiative reflects BDB's active role in supporting national efforts to boost food security, while also advancing several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — including: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Partnerships for the Goals. The Farmers Market is considered one of the Kingdom's most successful local initiatives, attracting over 200,000 visitors annually. It features more than 50 kiosks, cafes, and restaurants serving freshly prepared local dishes. The market also supports 21 local farmers, 18 Bahraini productive families, and three commercial ventures, all of which contribute to increased domestic production and stimulate the national economy. Given that Bahrain currently imports around 95% of its food requirements, the Farmers Market plays a crucial role in reducing this dependency by nurturing the local agricultural sector. It also encourages the growth of SMEs, in line with the Kingdom's broader economic vision to achieve sustainable development in agriculture.
