A song that captures the vibe of Bengaluru's Cubbon Park

The Hindu5 hours ago

A young couple walks along a lane in Cubbon Park, each carrying a single long-stemmed rose, shoulders grazing, eyes interlocked, clearly in the courting stage. A few yards away, in the parking lot, a young man wearing silver cufflinks and a barrister's band, is getting into his car while on the lawns beyond, a few older men are in deep siesta, their rhythmic snores interjected by the squeak of bounding squirrels, the caws of crows and the rustle of leaves dancing in the wind. Adjacent to this, at Queen's Park, a young woman in a sari fixes her camera to a stand and begins recording her Bollywood-style dance moves, while tourists convene near the statue of Edward VII aka 'Bertie', their casual jeans, sneakers and backpacks, starkly contrasting with the former king's close-fitting breeches, long cloak and dapper shoes.
It is this laidback, eclectic vibe of the park that a recently-released song, 'Cubbon Park', is trying to capture, explains Derek Mathias, who wrote this song last January while on a flight to Nagaland. 'I was on my laptop, and I thought I'd just write something because I hadn't written anything for a while,' says the Bengaluru-based musician and leader of the band, Derek & The Cats, as we settle on one of the benches situated amidst the undulating green of the park, insulated from traffic and the general bustle unfurling around it. The song made him feel ' content and happy… like a Sunday morning.'
For Derek, a true-blue Bengalurean and trained classical pianist who began learning to produce and record his music in college, Sunday mornings are also inevitably linked to Cubbon Park. 'I was trying to visualise this Sunday morning feeling, and since I've come here on Sunday mornings, calling it Cubbon Park seemed like a really apt thing. This place has had a positive impact on my life.'
'Cubbon Park', which was released on YouTube on June 1, is an ode to the park, offering an immersive experience of what the city's green lung looks and feels like on a weekend morning. In the video, a live performance of Derek & The Cats at the park is interspersed with footage of trees and lawns, bounding dogs, people playing badminton and frisbee, taking a ride on the toy train or boat, having breakfast at Airlines Hotel, and some regulars offering sound bites about what makes the park special.
'You come to Cubbon Park in the morning, take your dog for a walk, enjoy the space, go to Airlines, relax under that big banyan tree, have masala dosa and coffee and go home,' says Derek. 'That is the full experience…the emotion I wanted to capture.'
The journey
The band, which consists of Derek on the piano, Adesh Vinod on the guitar, Joel Rozario on percussion, Vishal Varier on bass, Kenneth Besterwitch on drums, Gautam David on saxophone and Anand Murali on keyboard, began working on the music video in March this year. While they had already been playing the song at various venues nationwide, testing and modifying it based on how people responded to the music, Derek wanted to release it only once the video was ready. 'I was particular that it had to come out with a video,' he says, pointing out that since the band makes instrumental music, 'it is hard for someone to just hear a melody, and think, Cubbon Park. We needed to find a way to document it.'
Since professional photography is prohibited in Cubbon Park, they had to get creative, using an iPhone 16 Pro, a GoPro, Insta360 and RayBan Meta glasses to document the park over several weekends. 'I am an engineer: jugaad is the way to do things,' he says, with a laugh. They even borrowed Appam, a friend's dog and attached the GoPro to his leash to 'document Cubbon Park through their (dogs') eyes,' he says.
In May this year, the band performed at the century-old bandstand in Cubbon Park, which has been revived recently, 'one of the best gigs I've ever played,' admits Derek. Unlike in a regular gig, where the performance takes place in dark, smoky venues at night, this gig occurred early in the morning, he recounts. 'There was greenery, Sunday morning breeze, completely open…it felt so inspiring to perform our music there…such a great way to start the day,' he says. 'We were just really happy.'
Derek hopes that 'Cubbon Park', which will be included in the band's second album that will be released in August, will make an impact. 'If a person from Bengaluru watches this video, they should feel nostalgic. And if someone from outside watches the video, they should say 'Wow, this is a place I'd like to go to',' he says.
In his opinion, people do not know enough about Bengaluru, and he hopes the song will help change this. 'We are a Bengaluru band, and if a band from Bengaluru doesn't spread its culture, who will?' he asks. 'Most of us in the band are born and raised here, so it has to be us.'

While the show's hilarious tracks continue to entertain, it's the quirky characters and their memorable catch phrases that have truly captured viewers' hearts. The kind of love and reactions I receive are overwhelming, and I truly enjoy them. It reflects the audience's deep affection for the show. ' Recalling the first time he realised the cultural impact of the catchphrase, Saanand said, 'I remember one time while I was in Mumbai, I happened to meet a neighbour who is a police officer by profession. During a casual conversation, he narrated an incident that completely caught him off guard. He was scolding his son quite seriously when the boy calmly responded with, 'I like it.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo My neighbour was baffled and asked his son why he would say that. Abhignya Vuthaluru on working in ‘thrilling, chilling' Viraatapalem PC Meena Reporting: ‘Many were shocked to learn…'

It's not just big stars, even those who've built a loyal fanbase through social media content also often find it difficult to break away from their established persona and try something uncharted. The hesitation isn't always due to a lack of ability. It more often stems from the fear of whether their fans would accept them in a new light, shattering the image that helped build their popularity in the first place. But YouTuber-turned-actor Abhignya Vuthaluru believes she's been fortunate to have an audience that already knows that she's a jack of many trades and supports her wish to experiment as an artiste. Not just that she isn't weighed down by the persona shaped by her fashion-centric YouTube channel, but it has only empowered her to pursue her aspirations in cinema without being enchained by expectations. That's also one of the reasons, she admits, why she could confidently take on the central role in the upcoming ZEE5 Telugu original series Viraatapalem: PC Meena Reporting without second thoughts. In Viraatapalem: PC Meena Reporting, Abhignya plays Meena, a police constable posted in the fictional village of Viraatapalem during the 1980s. The series is touted as a thriller centred around the mysterious deaths of brides on their wedding days, as a result of which no marriage has taken place in the village in a decade. The trailer and other promotional material have also established that the show will be a thrilling ride, devoid of overtly feel-good elements. Speaking about the show, in an exclusive conversation with SCREEN, Abhignya says, 'While I was watching the first cut, there were moments where I felt a sort of (creepy) energy. These aren't jump scares, but scenes that make you feel eerie. The frames and music definitely keep you hooked. It's both thrilling and chilling.' So what drew her to a character like Meena, especially since the show features a subject many actors might shy away from due to its intensity and the need to step outside their comfort zone? Abhignya notes, 'Though I am not so self-introspecting on my choices, I know where I want to be. I know with the little or upcoming better influence that I have, I want to be part of stories that reflect something beyond skin and external factors, such as fashion. Having said that, there's nothing wrong with it. I myself come from a fashion background and have a fashion channel. But I think that is always something you can achieve. However, stories like Viraatapalem that have personalities and layers are rare finds. It is a choice that I made much earlier in my career. While I'm part of glam and femme stories too, I also want to prove to my audience that this is the range I can perform. I want to be a versatile actor that way.' Was it an easy decision to take on such a role, especially since it deviates so far from her public persona? Did she ever worry about how her social media fam would react? 'I am actually blessed with a crowd on my social media who know that I can do that and this. While I enjoy the vanity aspect of actors, I also want to have a voice. Sure, we like to look at someone pretty, but when they have something to tell, it'll keep us hooked to them. I don't have a mantra to it. I'm just going by my gut feeling, and I know that it's all sort of adding up,' Abhignya maintains. 'It was so different from my other projects and in a good way,' she recalls her experience working on Viraatapalem. 'This was the first time I got a proper Telugu script in a set. And that took me back to my childhood.' Although she can read and write in Telugu, Abhignya admits she had started losing touch with the lipi (script), since most of her recent projects had English or Tenglish (a blend of Telugu and English) scripts. 'Also, when you speak English often, you tend to use a certain enunciation, and that's something I had to unlearn this time. It was a beautiful experience. Everyone on set was shocked upon learning that I could actually read Telugu,' she adds. A post shared by SCREEN (@ieentertainment) During the chat, Abhignya also shared that part of the fun working on Viraatapalem was also because the show has a 'beautiful balance of young and experienced actors.' She adds, 'There were character artistes who had as much experience as our ages. And they were cracking jokes and trying to understand our lingo. It was a super fun set. Also, the pace at which director Poluru Krishna shot the show was impressive. He knew every frame very well. This was the quickest shoot I have been part of.' Also starring Charan Lakkaraju, Lavanya Sahukara, Ramaraju, Gowtham Raju and Satish in key roles, Viraatapalem: PC Meena Reporting will start streaming on ZEE5 on June 27.
