MEPCO TM6 line to double Juthor's output to 120,000 Tons: CEO

Argaam21 hours ago

Middle East Paper Co. (MEPCO) CEO Faisal Haddawi said Saudi Arabia's tissue paper sector is expected to grow 5–6% annually over the coming years.
Growth will be driven by strong and rising domestic demand, supported by national efforts to boost local manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports.
Hadawi told Argaam the new TM6 production line will be a game changer, doubling the output of MEPCO's Juthor plant, from 60,000 to 120,000 tons annually, which specializes in tissue paper production.
He added that this expansion will help meet rising demand for tissue products in local and global markets. It will also broaden MEPCO's product range, enhance competitiveness, and open new export opportunities in line with Vision 2030.
The CEO said the TM6 project involves a total investment of SAR 345 million, financed through a mix of funding sources, including MEPCO's capital increase backed by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), bank facilities, commercial loans, and government programs supporting industrial development.

Gold set for second weekly loss; US inflation data in focus

BENGALURU: Gold declined on Friday and was headed for a second straight weekly loss, as the Israel-Iran ceasefire deal and progress on a US-China trade agreement dampened safe haven demand, while investors awaited the US inflation data. Spot gold slipped 1.2 percent to $3,288.55 per ounce as of 9:43 a.m. Saudi time. Bullion has lost 2.3 percent this week. US gold futures fell 1.4 percent to $3,300.40. 'The market is looking quite optimistic for the risky assets, so that's weighing on gold prices,' said ANZ Commodity Strategist Soni Kumari. De-escalation in the Middle East after the ceasefire and the progress in US-China trade talks are diminishing uncertainty from the market, sending prices further down, Kumari added. Iranians and Israelis have welcomed a return to normal life after 12 days of the most intense confrontation ever between the countries and a ceasefire that took effect on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the US has reached an agreement with China on how to expedite rare earth shipments to the US, a White House official said on Thursday, amid efforts to end a trade war between the world's two biggest economies. Investors are awaiting the US Core Personal Consumption Expenditure data at 3:30 p.m. Saudi time for further insight into the Federal Reserve's policy path, with analysts polled by Reuters forecasting a 0.1 percent monthly increase and a 2.6 percent annual rise. Markets are currently pricing in a 63-basis-point rate cut this year, starting September. US President Donald Trump says that tame inflation means the Fed should already be reducing its policy rate, but only two Fed policymakers to date have embraced the possibility of a rate cut at the central bank's July meeting. Spot silver fell 0.5 percent to $36.44 per ounce and platinum lost 2.8 percent to $1,378.18, after hitting its highest in nearly 11 years. Palladium gained 0.3 percent to $1,135.36, the highest since October 2024.

Saudi Water Authority to finance SAR 2.4B Jubail, Al Khobar desalination systems

The Saudi Water Authority signed a financing agreement with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the National Infrastructure Fund (Infra) to support a strategic project aimed at developing the infrastructure of the first phase of the Jubail desalination system and the second phase of the Al Khobar system, at a total value of SAR 2.43 billion. According to SPA, AIIB will provide over SAR 1.6 billion in funding under the agreement, marking one of the largest non-sovereign institutional financing deals supported by the bank to date. This strengthens public-private partnerships in strategic infrastructure projects. Infra will contribute SAR 750 million. The water sector is one of the key focus areas of the fund, aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. The project aims to convert the Jubail Phase 1 and Al Khobar Phase 2 desalination systems from multi-stage thermal desalination to reverse osmosis (RO) technology. This shift is expected to improve energy efficiency, increase water production capacity, and extend the operational lifespan of both systems by around 20 years, in support of Saudi Arabia's sustainability and climate goals under Vision 2030. The Al Khobar Phase 2 desalination system has achieved a global milestone as the world's largest seawater desalination plant using RO technology, with a record production capacity of 670,852.4 cubic meters per day. It was also built on the smallest land area globally for a plant of its kind, thanks to the application of advanced technical methodologies and value engineering. This agreement follows a joint announcement made earlier this year between the AIIB and the Government of Saudi Arabia, which laid the groundwork for long-term cooperation in the areas of water, wastewater, renewable energy, sustainable transport, and urban development.
