Rosie O'Donnell is back on the small screen as a nun having the time of her life in ‘And Just Like That…'
Rosie O'Donnell has moved an ocean away from Hollywood, but she's still entertaining audiences.
The actress and former talk show host shared with Variety how she ended up playing a lesbian nun having a New York City adventure in 'And Just Like That…,' which returned for its third season on HBO Max on Thursday. O'Donnell explained that she has long been friends with Cynthia Nixon, who plays Miranda on the comedy and its prequel, 'Sex and the City.'
'My daughter was actually her assistant on set,' O'Donnell explained. 'She put her on there, and then she said, 'By the way, Michael told me that he has a role for you. Are you up for it?' I said, 'Are you kidding me? In a minute!' I didn't even have to think about it.'
O'Donnell has also known the show's creator, Michael Patrick King, for more than 30 years.
'When I was a young comedian, he was in a comedy duo called King and Mindy — Lisa Mindy and Michael King,' she said. 'I used to hang out with them at Catch a Rising Star and at the Improv. It's been pretty amazing to see the people that began together doing so well.'
As for being gay in real life and learning that King had created a lesbian nun character for her, O'Donnell said, 'I laughed my a** off. I thought — I know how to play this character.'
'I was very, very happy to be doing all my scenes with Cynthia. It was not acting for me. I don't have to act in love with her, because I've been in love with her for many years,' O'Donnell said. 'I saw her in 'Wit,' on Broadway, and even though I had known her for very many years and was friends with her in a real way, when I went backstage, I was awestruck and couldn't find my words.'
O'Donnell, who has also appeared on the HBO comedy 'Hacks' this season, said people like the character she plays, Mary, who discovers her sexuality later in life, are common.
'I know many women who only come to it in their 40s, and how hard it is when they set up a life with a man and children, and then they come to realize this basic thing about themselves,' she sad. 'I understand their struggle. It was a relatable character — somebody who, for all different reasons, wasn't able to be in touch with who they were, and then came to find the beauty that awaits the rest of her life.'
She also reflected on having moved to Ireland from the United States.
'Never, for one moment since I arrived here, did I regret my choice,' O'Donnell said.
'People have been so welcoming, so accepting, and they have a different view of celebrity in the culture here,' she added. 'They are not prioritized over other people. People are much more friendly and intimate with each other in a real way.'

Rosie O'Donnell opened up for the first time about her child coming out as nonbinary. In a conversation with Variety about her role as a Mary in the third season of And Just Like That..., Rosie discussed when her child, Clay, 12, disclosed their gender identity to her. Rosie described it as "the most interesting thing." "I have a little one who is nonbinary — 12 years old — and it was the most interesting thing," the actor and comedian said. "They said to me, 'Mommy, I'm nonbinary. I'm not a boy and I'm not a girl.' I said, 'Okay, fantastic.'" "They go, 'My pronouns are they/them, and I'd like them respected.' I will do my very best, right? Who are they, Harvey Milk reincarnated?" Rosie added. If you didn't know, Rosie is a parent to five children: Clay, Vivieene, 22, Blake, 25, Chelsea, 27, and Parker, 30. In a March 20 TikTok, Rosie confirmed that she's officially living in Ireland and is "proud and impressed" with her child Clay's adjustment to the big change. They have no understanding of what it was like when I was 10 in 1972 and nobody mentioned it. The word was not said — you would never admit it." "You'd go to church and hear horrible things about people like you, and Billie Jean [King] and Martina [Navratilova] had to disclaim their lesbianism and pretend they were not gay in order to continue working on the tennis circuit, and that was so painful for me when I was a 10-year-old. They didn't understand. I've been trying to explain to them what it was like when I was a kid, and they are stunned." As a millennial who is queer and nonbinary, it's important to note that the reason it's much different for younger generations like Clay and myself can be attributed to people like Rosie. I grew up watching Rosie in A League of Their Own, The Flintstones, Wide Awake, Harriet the Spy (my favorite), and her talk shows. When she publicly came out, it was the first time I saw someone accepting who they truly are despite opposition. It provided me with a blueprint to begin my journey of self-discovery years ago, and these journeys continue for the younger generations, thanks to folks like Rosie. "It was really a strange time to be out of the closet to everyone in show business who knew me personally — and in my life, everyone knew and I had children. Once you have children, you're out! Because you go with your partner to the school meetings," Rosie told the publication. "I was out to everyone except the public. And I often thought it was surprising that when I did come out, people were surprised. 'Well, you like Tom Cruise.' I didn't want him naked in my bed! Valerie Mahaffey death: Young Sheldon and Desperate Housewives star dies aged 71
Emmy-winning actor Valerie Mahaffey has died at age 71. The Young Sheldon and Desperate Housewives star, who had been diagnosed with cancer, died May 30, her husband Joseph Kell confirmed. 'I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its most endearing actresses. She will be missed,' Kell said in a statement, per Variety. Born in Indonesia, Mahaffey got her start on Broadway, appearing in six plays and musicals in the 1970s and 80s. She appeared in more than a dozen off-Broadway and regional productions as well, including Othello opposite Morgan Freeman and Romeo and Juliet with Tom Hulce. After establishing herself as a versatile stage actor, Mahaffey became in-demand among TV and film productions. Mahaffey's first TV break came on the daytime soap opera The Doctors, for which she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in 1980. She would go on to win the 1992 supporting actress Emmy for her work on Northern Exposure. Mahaffey played Eve in the comedy-drama, which aired on CBS from 1990-1995. Mahaffey's other notable TV roles included Alma Hodge on season three of Desperate Housewives, teacher Victoria MacElroy on Young Sheldon, and Helen Pergman on Big Sky. She guest starred on dozens of shows throughout her career including Cheers, CSI, Seinfeld, Wings, ER, The Mindy Project, Grey's Anatomy, Hannah Montana, and Boston Legal.
