Imran Khan asks party to launch strong political movement after Ramzan, engage with Opposition
Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has asked his party to launch a strong political movement after Ramzan and directed two senior leaders to contact opposition, The Express Tribune reported.
Khan's lawyer Faisal Chaudhry made the announcement while speaking to reporters outside Adiala Jail after meeting PTI founder. Chaudhry said Imran Khan asked PTI leaders - Asad Qaiser and Omar Ayub to establish communication with opposition parties. He also called on establishment to consider facts that he has mentioned in his open letters.
Imran Khan's lawyer said that PTI leaders having legal cases lodged against them face controlled trials in Adiala Jail while those who quit the party after May 9 protests have been spared legal consequences.
Faisal Chaudhry said that PTI has filed a petition in Islamabad High Court for requesting an open trial. He claimed that lawyers and journalists were selectively permitted inside the courtroom.
"Lawyers and journalists are selectively allowed inside the courtroom. The judiciary is being crushed, and basic rights are being violated," The Express Tribune quoted him as saying.
Imran Khan's lawyer called events that happened on May 9, 2023 a false flag operation and demanded an independent judicial commission to conduct probe into the incidents.
He further said, "We seek justice under the Constitution and law. We disagree with the Supreme Court bench's remarks on military courts." Faisal Chaudhry also quoted Imran Khan to highlight economic crisis and human rights violations in Pakistan.
"The sanctity of homes was violated in crackdowns against PTI. Basic human rights are being trampled. With media censorship and internet restrictions, who will invest in Pakistan?", Faisal Chaudhry quoted Imran Khan as saying.
He claimed that Pakistan suffered an economic loss of USD 45 million after PTI's removal and PM Shehbaz Sharif-led government was formed "on the shoulders of Form 47," The Express Tribune reported.
Last week, Imran Khan wrote a second open letter to Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir, alleging that the country's largest political party is being "targeted," Geo News reported.
"I wrote an open letter to the Army Chief (you) with sincere intentions for the betterment of the country and the nation, aiming to bridge the growing divide between the military and the public. However, the response was extremely irresponsible and unserious," Geo News quoted the letter penned by Imran Khan.
PTI leader asserted that he had dedicated his entire life to bringing global recognition to Pakistan. "My 55 years of public life since the 1970s and my 30 years of earnings are fully transparent. My life and death are solely tied to Pakistan," the letter read.
Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan expressed his concerns regarding the military's image and the potential consequences of the widening gap between the public and the army, citing them as the reason for writing this letter.
Referring to his first letter to the Army Chief, Khan claimed that 90 per cent of the public would have supported the six points he had highlighted if they had been consulted. In the letter, he alleged that the government was installed by manipulating election results through pre-poll rigging.
"The authorities passed the 26th Constitutional Amendment through parliament to control the judiciary and Peca [Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act] to silence dissent," he added.
He noted that political instability and the "might is right" policy plunged the country's economy into chaos. Khan regretted that the country's "largest political party" was being targeted and all state institutions were being used for political engineering and revenge, according to Geo News report.
Referring to his imprisonment, he claimed that he had been placed in solitary confinement and deprived of sunlight for 20 days. "My exercise equipment, television, and even newspapers have been taken away. They restrict my access to books whenever they wish. Besides those 20 days, I was also locked up for another 40 hours. In the last six months, I have been allowed to speak to my sons only three times," he added.

Good news expected soon on India-Oman FTA: Minister
Muscat – India and Oman are close to finalising a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with some 'good news' expected very soon regarding the signing of the deal, according to India's Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal. As reported by several Indian media outlets on Monday, Goyal stated that negotiations between India and Oman on the proposed free trade agreement are progressing towards a conclusion. The talks gained renewed momentum following Goyal's visit to Muscat in January this year. The negotiations for the agreement, officially known as the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), formally commenced in November 2023. 'I think you will see some good news very soon on the Oman FTA,' Goyal told reporters during his official visit to France, when asked whether the agreement could be concluded this year, according to PTI. Goyal was in France to hold discussions with French leaders and businesses aimed at enhancing trade and investment ties. He was also scheduled to attend a mini-ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Tuesday. Oman is India's third-largest export destination among the GCC countries. India already has a similar agreement in place with another GCC member, the United Arab Emirates, which came into effect in May 2022. India's key imports from Oman include petroleum products and urea, which together account for over 70% of total imports. Other significant imports from Oman comprise polymers of propylene and ethylene, petcoke, gypsum, chemicals, and iron and steel. Speaking about such FTAs, Goyal remarked that these agreements not only promote trade in goods and services, but also strengthen supply chains and instill confidence among businesses on both sides through stable policies and predictability, according to the PTI report. 'So, in a way, it's a big message when you conclude an FTA,' he added.

US: New student visa appointments to be halted
Washington, D.C., US – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered new appointments for students visas to be halted in an internal State Department communication. In the cable, first reported by magazine Politico, Rubio said that the department sought to issue updated guidance on social media vetting of student and exchange visitor applicants. Consular sections were advised to halt scheduling these types of visa appointments. 'The Department is conducting a review of existing operations and processes for screening and vetting of student and exchange visitor (F, M, J) visa applicants, and based on that review, plans to issue guidance on expanded social media vetting for all such applicants,' the Reuters news agency quoted text from the cable. Trump administration officials have said that student visa and green card holders are subject to deportation over pro-Palestinian activism or support. A Turkish Tufts University student was held for over six weeks in an immigration detention centre in Louisiana after co-authoring an opinion piece criticising her school's response to Israel's war in Gaza. She was released from custody after being granted bail by a federal judge. Last week a judge blocked the White House's bid to halt Harvard's ability to enroll foreign students after the school sued the Trump administration. Harvard called the revocation a 'blatant violation' of the US Constitution. Harvard students rally Students at Harvard University rallied on Tuesday after Donald Trump's administration said it is seeking to cancel all remaining financial contracts with the university. Doubling down its effort to curtail the university's autonomy, the Trump administration has asked the federal agencies to cut contracts worth US$100mn at Harvard. Hundreds of students gathered to protest against Trump administration's actions against the university which has refused to give up control of curriculum, admissions and research. 'Trump = traitor', read one student placard. The crowd chanted 'who belongs in class today, let them stay' in reference to Harvard's international students whose status Trump has upended by revoking the university's accreditation to the country's Student and Exchange Visitor programme. The termination of the remaining contracts would mark the end of business ties between the government and a university that is the country's oldest and a research powerhouse. The US government has already cancelled more than US$2.6bn in federal research grants for the Ivy League university. NPR sues Trump Meanwhile, National Public Radio and three of its local stations are suing President Donald Trump, arguing that his executive order cutting funding to the 246-station network violates free speech. The American public broadcasting organisation, along with local stations Colorado Public Radio, Aspen Public Radio and KSUT Public Radio, want Trump's order blocked and declared unconstitutional. Earlier this month, Trump ordered the withdrawal of funding for NPR and for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). The executive order stated that taxpayer subsidies for what he termed 'partisan media' would be ended. DW

Indian Union Minister Piyush Goyal meets US Commerce Secretary Lutnick, advances India-US trade talks
New Delhi: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held productive discussions with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, focusing on expediting the first tranche of the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement. Taking to the social media platform X, Goyal shared an image of the two leaders shaking hands, stating, "Good discussions with Secretary Howard Lutnick towards expediting the first tranche of India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement." Earlier in May, the Union Commerce and Industry Minister stated that the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) with the US was moving progressively in the right direction. "Conversation with the US is going very well. We were the first country to start the conversation. Conversion is going extremely well. We are moving progressively in the right direction," said Union Minister Piyush Goyal, speaking at the Columbia India Energy Dialogue in New Delhi. "I think the US and India are totally complementary to each other. We are a perfect fit, where there is hardly anything, except one or two products, where we compete; otherwise, we are totally too complementary. At USD 83,000 per capita income, what the US can produce can never compete with Indian goods made in India. And there are so many technologies and so many innovations and products which are not available in India, which I would buy from the United States rather than buying from many other non-market economies," the Union Minister said." "Frankly, this is a partnership that's truly contemporary, a win-win for both and will be the defining partnership in the coming months and years, given the very sheer scale of the American economy today and the delta of opportunity that India offers as it grows from a 4 trillion-dollar economy to a USD 35 trillion economy by 2047," Goyal added. India and the US aim to ink the deal by the fall of 2025. India's exports reportedly rose 11.6 per cent to USD 86.5 billion, while imports rose 7.4 per cent to USD 45.3 billion in 2024-25, resulting in a higher trade surplus of USD 41 billion. The US administration imposes reciprocal tariffs on countries with a sizable trade deficit. During their meeting in mid-February 2025, President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi resolved to expand trade and investment to make their citizens more prosperous, nations stronger, economies more innovative, and supply chains more resilient. They resolved to deepen the US-India trade relationship to promote growth that ensures fairness, national security, and job creation. To this end, the leaders set a bold new goal for bilateral trade - "Mission 500" - to more than double total bilateral trade to USD 500 billion by 2030.
