Carlota Ciganda wins Meijer LPGA Classic for her first LPGA Tour victory in more than 8 1/2 years

BELMONT, Mich. — Carlota Ciganda birdied the final two holes to win the Meijer LPGA Classic on Sunday for her first LPGA Tour victory in more than 8 1/2 years, while Lexi Thompson had two late bogeys to dash her bid to end a long drought of her own.
Ciganda hit to a foot to set up her birdie on the par-4 17th, then made a 4-foot comebacker on the par-5 18th to avoid a playoff with playing partner Hye-Jin Choi.
Part of a six-way tie to start the day at Blythefield County Club, Ciganda shot a 5-under 67 — her fourth straight round in the 60s — to finish at 16-under 272 on the tree-lined layout in the final event before the major KPMG Women's PGA Championship in Texas.
The 35-year-old Spanish player won for the first time since the 2016 Lorena Ochoa Invitational, a span of 8 years, 7 months, 2 days. She has three LPGA Tour victories and has won eight times on the Ladies European Tour, the last in December in the Spanish Women's Open.
Choi finished with a 68, also shooting in the 60s all four days. Fellow South Korean player Somi Lee was third at 14 under after a 65.
Thompson had a 70 to tie for fourth with Celine Boutier and Nanna Koerstz Madsen .
Thompson, the 2015 winner at Blythefield, won the last of her 11 LPGA Tour titles in early June 2019 at the ShopRite LPGA Classic. She made her sixth start of the season in a part-time tour schedule, and also is set to play next week in the major at PGA Frisco.
The 30-year-old from Florida ran into trouble on the par-4 16th. She tried to leave the ball below the hole on the elevated green, but her approach rolled off the front of the green and down a hill into rough. She hit a flop shot to 8 feet and missed the par putt. On 17, she missed a 3-footer to end.
Last year in the event, Thompson lost in a playoff to Lilia Vu.
Ciganda matched Beatriz Recari for the most victories by a Spanish player. The former Arizona State player is the oldest LPGA Tour winner since Eun-Hee Ji at 36 in the 2022 T-Mobile Match Play.

Soccer-Four people handed suspended jail sentences over Vinicius Jr effigy

June 16 - Four people have been handed suspended jail sentences by a Madrid Court after being found guilty of a hate crime related to an effigy of Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr, Spain's LaLiga said in a statement on Monday. They were all involved in hanging a banner reading "Madrid hates Real" and an inflatable black effigy in a replica of the Brazilian's No. 20 shirt on a bridge before a Copa del Rey match against Atletico Madrid in January 2023. According to the ruling, one defendant was sentenced to 15 months in prison for a hate crime and an additional seven months for making threats, having distributed images of the act online. The other three were sentenced to seven months in prison for hate crimes and seven months for threats. They will not serve prison time, however, after all four signed a letter of apology to Vinicius, Real Madrid, LaLiga and the Spanish soccer federation . "The defendant who posted the video online received a special disqualification from working in education, sports, or recreational youth settings for four years and three months, while the others received three years and seven months," the LaLiga statement said. The first defendant was fined 1,084 euros and the other three 720 euros, with additional punishments including a 1,000-meter restraining order from Vinicius, his home and workplace, and a ban on approaching soccer stadiums during LaLiga or RFEF matches. They will all be required to participate in an educational programme on equal treatment and non-discrimination in order for the prison sentences imposed to be suspended. There was no immediate confirmation from the court and no immediate reaction from Vinicius.

Carlos Alcaraz's huge Trent Alexander-Arnold verdict ahead of Real Madrid's Club World Cup opener; ‘pretty sure he's…'

Tennis star and a Real Madrid super fan Carlos Alcaraz made a massive statement on Trent Alexander-Arnold after the Englishman made a move to the La Liga giants recently ahead of the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the United States. Under new manager Xabi Alonso, Alexander-Arnold could be handed a potential Real Madrid debut on June 19 against Saudi Arabian powerhouse Al-Hilal. Alexander-Arnold, who graduated at Liverpool academy before spending a considerable time with the senior team, recently lifted the English Premier League. However, the right-back opted to run down his contract with Liverpool and join Real Madrid. 'It's great having him at Real Madrid,' Alcaraz was quoted as saying to BBC Sport. 'I'm pretty sure he's going to be the best (right back in the world)!' Alcaraz, who recently clinched the French Open men's singles title, also spoke highly of Alexander-Arnold for his Spanish. "If I meet him one day, I will speak with him in Spanish. His Spanish is pretty, pretty good. It surprised me when I heard it. It's not easy when you are standing in front of a new club, new president, new teammate, new everyone. Speaking another language and being able to do it like this, respect to him," added the 22-year-old.

Soccer-Palmeiras held by Porto as substitute keeper Ramos shines in Club World Cup draw

NEW JERSEY -Palmeiras and Porto played out a 0-0 draw in their Group A opener of the Club World Cup at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday, with Porto's stand-in goalkeeper Claudio Ramos delivering a stellar performance to frustrate the Brazilian side. Ramos, deputising for injured captain Diego Costa, produced a string of saves to deny Palmeiras, who dominated the contest but were unable to find a breakthrough. The substitute keeper's heroics ensured Porto left with a valuable point as all four teams in Group A remain level after Lionel Messi's Inter Miami and Egypt's Al Ahly also drew 0-0 on Saturday. Palmeiras nearly grabbed a winner in the dying moments when Murilo's header struck the post, adding to their growing frustration. Speaking to DAZN after the match, Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira praised his side's efforts but rued missed opportunities. 'I think it was a well-balanced game where we had the best chances, but football is incredible. Porto's best player was their substitute goalkeeper, who made four or five incredible saves to frustrate us,' he said. Ramos' standout moment came in first-half stoppage time when he made three successive saves. Estevao and Mauricio were denied from close range before Richard Rios' follow-up shot was cleared off the line by a defender. The 32-year-old keeper stepped up admirably after Costa was sidelined with a leg muscle injury sustained in training last week. Palmeiras, led by their young attacking duo of Vitor Roque and Estevao, soon to be joining Premier League's Chelsea, were the more threatening side throughout the match, excelling in quick transitions and displaying incisive build-up play. However, Porto's defence held firm, with Ramos and his backline soaking up pressure. Porto, meanwhile, looked to exploit high balls to towering Spanish striker Samu Aghehowa and nearly benefited from a Palmeiras error in the 20th minute. Felipe Anderson tried to challenge Martim Fernandes in a high ball lifted over Palmeiras´ box but he sliced his header and almost scored an own goal, denied with a brilliant one-handed save by keeper Weverton to avert disaster. With all teams level on one point, Group A remains wide open as Palmeiras prepare to face Al Ahly and Porto take on Inter Miami in the next round of fixtures on Thursday.
