United Airlines is raising annual fees for lounges and rewards credit cards. Here's what you need to know
United Airlines is raising fees for annual airport lounge membership and its rewards credit cards, a test of how much consumers will shell out for popular travel perks.
The carrier announced the changes Monday alongside sign-up bonuses for its co-branded cards from JPMorgan Chase, as well as new cardholder benefits including rideshare credits and award flight discounts.
'Yes, there are fee increases but we were very, very cognizant of ensuring that the value increments and the benefits that are delivered outweigh any increase in the cost of those cards,' Richard Nunn, chief executive of United's MileagePlus loyalty program, told reporters. United had been working on the changes to its card portfolio for the past year or so, Nunn said.
Airlines have steadily increased the prices of everything from checked bags to seat assignments and offered perks that used to come for free as part of a package when customers sign up for co-branded credit cards.
They have also raised the price and tightened entry requirements to get into popular airport lounges as the number of premium-credit-card holders and travelers with elite status grows and has led to crowding at some facilities. American, United and most recently Delta Air Lines, operate separate tiers of lounges for customers traveling in long-haul business class, and they've all opened larger lounges in recent years.
United added about 17 million Mileage Plus members over the past 'couple of years' Nunn said, and views the new card perks as a way to encourage more United flyers to sign up for the co-branded cards.
Loyalty revenue, including from popular rewards credit cards, has given airlines a windfall. Aside from passenger and cargo revenue, United brought in $3.49 billion in 'other' revenue last year, up 10% from the year before, mostly due to an increase in co-branded card spending and other nonairline partners, as well as airport lounge memberships, it said in its annual filing last month.
Here's what's changing with lounges:
Starting Monday, United will offer two tiers of memberships to its United Club airport lounge network.
Individual memberships will go for $750 a year or 94,000 United loyalty points, with access for the passholder only.
For customers looking to take up to two guests into the lounge, it will cost $1,400 or 175,000 miles, for United Clubs and Star Alliance partner lounges.
Lounge memberships, including two guests, previously cost $650 a year, though there were discounts for customers with elite frequent flyer status.
Customers with an existing membership will keep the terms that they signed up for until their membership expires.
Here are the credit card fees that are changing and some of the new benefits:
The new fees go into effect with new sign-ups starting Monday, but benefits will be active for existing card members.
The United Explorer card goes to $150 a year from $95, and additional benefits include a $60 rideshare credit.
The United Quest card goes to $350 a year from $250 and includes $100 of rideshare credits, two upgrades to extra legroom seats and $200 in United travel credits.
The United Club Infinite Card goes to $695 a year from $525, which also includes an annual lounge membership, $150 in rideshare credits and the ability to earn Premier 1K elite status through card spending and bonus qualifying points.

The airport is located less than two miles from the National Mall. The U.S. Army is bringing 6,500 troops into Washington, along with 150 vehicles and 50 aircraft for the celebration. The flyover will include Apache and Black Hawk helicopters along with Chinooks. Older aircraft like the World War Two-era B-25 bomber and P-51 Mustang will also take part. The Washington area is the most heavily restricted airspace in the United States. No drones are permitted in Washington without special FAA approval.

Instead, the No.1 choice has been Manchester United, who have made him their top target after tying up a deal for Wolves star Matheus Cunha. Offers have been made, but United have fallen short of Brentford's demands, a first offer of £45million up front with £10m in add-ons rejected, before a second bid was also turned down. But now Mbeumo has seen Tottenham hijack United's move, with new Spurs boss Thomas Frank pushing for a reunion with a player he knows so well. As exclusively revealed by Mirror Football on Friday night, the North London club have made a big-money move to get Mbeumo. Spurs have launched a £70m bid, worth £65m plus £5m in add-ons. All told, it's £10m more than United's last offer, with more guaranteed. It's understood Mbeumo still prefers to join United. Certainly they have the edge when it comes to wages, as the salary on offer at Old Trafford is between £150,000-£175,000-a-week with bonuses taking Mbeumo's expected package to £200,000-a-week. Bonuses would still see it fall short of the cash he would pick up at United. But as Spurs were making their move on Friday afternoon - and before it hit the public domain - Mbeumo himself stoked the transfer rumour flame on social media, amid suggestions he's reconsidering his options. Until then, Mbeumo hadn't reacted to Frank's departure as Brentford boss, but the 25-year-old duly used his Instagram account to do just that, sharing Brentford's post confirming Frank's exit - almost 24 hours later - captioning it with two prayer emojis. Let's just say it's open to interpretation what they meant. Thank you? Please take me with you? Ultimately the proof will be in the pudding. Intriguingly, Frank was candid about his desire to continue working with Mbeumo while still Brentford boss, comments that speak volumes about his thoughts of the player. "I'm the head coach. I want my best players to stay forever" he said. "I know that Bryan is very happy being here at Brentford, he's thriving, doing well and playing fantastic. What happens in the future? I don't know. United shares dropped to less than £10 each in the immediate aftermath of the Europa League Final defeat by Spurs, representing a 60 per cent fall from the £26 per share he paid for his total £1.487bn investment last year. It was a public response to the £100m black hole in income for next season after United's worst campaign since they were relegated from the top flight in 1974. That meant the club's market capitalisation - its value in terms of the share price - had plummeted from the £4.54bn implied by Ratcliffe's purchases to just £1.72bn. But the past month has seen a change in fortunes, with the price of shares on the New York Stock Exchange briefly touching a 2025 high of £14.51 each on Monday. According to the latest figures, while United's net debt of £482m is significantly less than the £793m owed by Spurs after the building of their new ground it costs Ratcliffe and Ineos far more to service. United's debt repayments stood at £61m per year in 2023-24, compared to the £47m cost of meeting Tottenham's schedule. Deloitte reported that United's wage bill in the last full season under Erik ten Hag stood at £365m, below only Manchester City and Liverpool, representing 55 per cent of their £662m revenues.
