Cristiano Ronaldo fluffs his lines with woeful penalty for Al-Nassr as he endures a frustrating night in front of goal... before finally scoring from the spot in stoppage time

Daily Mail21-05-2025

Cristiano Ronaldo shocked fans with an uncharacteristic miss from the penalty spot on Wednesday, striking the post with a poor effort during Al-Nassr 's 2-0 win over Al-Khaleej.
With the score tied at 0-0 midway through the second half, the Portugal legend was handed a golden opportunity to break the deadlock from the spot after Sultan Al-Ghannam was illegally brought down in the penalty area.
To the surprise of his team-mates and Al-Nassr's fans, Ronaldo clipped the outside of the post after aiming for the bottom left-hand corner, immediately flailing his arms in frustration.
Ronaldo has endured a difficult time at Al-Nassr of late, with the Saudi Pro League giants having failed qualify for the AFC Champions League Elite last week after yet another frustrating campaign.
With Al-Nassr missing out on Champions League Elite qualification, Saudi Arabia will instead be represented in Asia 's top club tournament next season by Al-Ittihad, Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli.
Ronaldo, despite being the highest-paid sports star on the planet since his move to the Saudi giants in January 2023, has yet to win a major honour at the club, leading to speculation over a potential exit.

Despite missing the penalty, the 40-year-old veteran ultimately rallied his team-mates and guided Al-Nassr to a 2-0 victory, with former Aston Villa star Jhon Duran netting in the 75th minute before he scored deep into stoppage time to seal the win.
Blessed with another opportunity from the spot in the 97th minute, Ronaldo made no mistake at the second time of asking, placing his effort into the bottom left corner again - and this time the right side of the post.
Upon bulging the net, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star walked over to Al-Nassr's fans and apologised, his first penalty miss still clearly weighing on his mind.
Addressing supporters again on social media after the match, the forward appeared to see the funny side of his difficult outing in front of goal.
'One of those nights where the ball just didn't want to go in… until it did,' the icon posted on X, accompanying his remark with an embarrassed laugh emoji.
This week, Ronaldo has suggested that he could keep playing for another 10 years after finding out his physiological age.
Whoop conducted a physical analysis of the 40-year-old Ronaldo and determined his physiological age to be just 28.9.
The Portuguese star was stunned by the results and joked that he might be able to keep playing for another decade.

He joked: 'I can't believe it's so good. This means I'll play for another ten years. When you're young, you think you'll live forever, that you'll always be strong, that you're unbreakable.
'At 25 it's not the same as when you're thirty, especially in football. I still feel good, I prioritize recovery and sleep much more than before.'
Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast last September, Ronaldo admitted that he realised his career was entering its twilight phase and opened up on what he will yearn for once he retires.
'I'm going to miss the adrenaline of scoring a goal, and (the feeling) of being nervous,' he said.
'I think I'm going to miss that because in other part of me, I can control that. I have good people around me, good business, I have good things.
'But I (will miss the fact that) the adrenalin of football is never going to exist (again). This is why I'm going further than football.
'I give everything, to 40, 41, it doesn't matter. I give my body for 25 years of football and I cannot give more because age doesn't allow to go further.'
Ronaldo's contract with Al-Nassr expires this summer, with an extension yet to be agreed.

Footy legend Nick Riewoldt slams the AFL for being TOO WOKE to take action over the most powerful woman in the game

Footy legend Nick Riewoldt has taken aim at the AFL for not demoting executive general manager of football Laura Kane sooner, labelling them 'social justice warriors'. The AFL announced last week that Kane's AFL football operations role will be split into two roles, with the 34-year-old no longer overseeing key football areas. Kane has become a lightning rod for criticism this season over issues such as the Willie Rioli saga, the standard of umpiring and AFL miscommunication around what happened when Collingwood player Lachie Schultz was concussed in a game against Fremantle. A separate head of football performance role is now being created . Kane will continue to oversee the AFL and AFLW, plus the VFL and VFLW and a newly formed medical and healthcare team that will oversee areas including mental health and concussion. It was confirmed on Monday that Lions chief executive officer Greg Swann will take on the role as the head of football performance. Riewoldt said Swann's arrival is long overdue. 'If the AFL weren't so consumed with being social justice warriors, Laura Kane would have been moved aside 12 months ago,' he said on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters on Monday night. 'It is (a win) now. Either the role was too big, or she was the wrong person (for the job).' AFL chief Andrew Dillon insists there's nothing personal in the demotion of Kane. 'It was a big, big role,' Dillon told SEN radio on Friday. 'Decisions affect people but they're not personal. 'It's actually about what's the right thing for the AFL, not just for now, because the AFL's in an incredible position at the moment. ' ... We have now got a structure that actually allows us to continue to be successful for the next three to five years and that was the thinking.' In a separate interview on ABC Radio, Dillon rejected the notion that unconscious gender bias was a factor in Kane's dealings with clubs and subsequent demotion. 'It's not a gender thing,' he said. 'Laura has broken down a lot of barriers. She is an incredibly talented administrator.' Swann, who has been involved in club administration for more than 25 years, will oversee hot issues including the match review system, umpiring and laws of the game. 'I'm leaving to go the AFL to head up footy, I suppose, in the simplest terms,' Swann said when he confirmed his appointment to Lions colleagues. Lions coach Chris Fagan said Swann would be a major boost for the AFL. 'I'm really pleased for Swanny, it will be great for the game,' he said. 'He's one of those composed, calm and experienced people. We're obviously sad to lose him ... but things don't last forever. 'ln this instance, it will be a great win for the AFL. 'He'll help bring another angle to decision making that perhaps hasn't been there in recent times.'

Spain v France not a Ballon d'Or decider, says Yamal

June 2 (Reuters) - Spain's Barcelona striker Lamine Yamal has said the Ballon d'Or award won't be decided by performances on Thursday when he and France's Paris St Germain forward Ousmane Dembele take part in the Nations League Final Four. Spain and France meet in Stuttgart for a place in the final, with the winners facing either Germany or Portugal who play in the other semi-final on Wednesday. Yamal and Dembele have been crucial for club and country this season and the prestigious golden ball trophy could end up with one of them in September during the ceremony in Paris. But the Barca striker challenged a journalist who asked whether Thursday's clash would be decisive for the voting. "If you had to give the Ballon d'Or, who would you give it to - the best player of the year or the one who wins on Thursday?" Yamal told Spanish broadcaster Cadena COPE on Monday. "I'm confident we'll win on Thursday, but whether we win or not, I'd vote for the player of the year because if something happens to me or Dembele on Thursday, who do you vote for? One who plays on Sunday? "I would give it to the best player of the year, and I'd keep it for myself." The competition is tough between the duo, with Dembele winning a Ligue 1, French Cup and Champions League treble, while the 17-year-old Yamal won LaLiga, the Spanish Cup and Spanish Super Cup. Dembele has scored 35 goals in all competitions for club and country this season, while Yamal has netted 19. The nominees for the 2025 edition of the Ballon d'Or award, which covers August 1-July 31, will be announced at the start of August, with the ceremony taking place on September 22.

Dolphins place LT Terron Armstead on reserve-retired list

June 2 - The retirement of Miami Dolphins left tackle Terron Armstead became official Monday when the team placed him on the reserve-retired list. Armstead let it be known in April that he was retiring, with the Dolphins waiting until June to submit official paperwork in order to move the cap hit obligations over two years instead of one. Of the $18.548 million in dead money that remains, $10.732 million of it can now be moved to 2026. Miami can also recover more than $7 million signing-bonus money that already was paid and turn it into a credit on their cap hit. Armstead, 33, played the final three of his 12 NFL seasons with the Dolphins. He spent his first nine seasons with the New Orleans Saints and started 131 of his 135 games played. He was named to the Pro Bowl five times, most recently in 2023. --Field Level Media
