EAST BROOKFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Second Chance Animal Services is looking for foster families for pregnant pets.
Massachusetts animal hospital to perform life-saving surgery on homeless puppy
The nonprofit states that they've got a surge in pregnant animals who need a safe place to give birth and care for their newborns. Foster families typically care for a pregnant animal for several weeks to a few months, depending on the pet's needs and the age of the litter.
No prior experience is needed, and Second Chance will provide training and guidance to families, as well as food, medical care, and support. If you are interested in fostering a pregnant pet, visit their website and fill out an application.
'Our fosters ensure we can help the most vulnerable animals,' said Lindsay Doray, Chief Development Officer for Second Chance. 'Right now, we're seeing a heartbreaking increase in requests to take in pregnant pets, and we simply don't have enough foster homes to meet the need. Without more fosters, we are forced to say no.'
'This is a wonderful way to make a life-changing difference without a long-term commitment,' added Doray. 'You're giving these pets and their babies the best possible start.'

Canadian wildfire smoke brings hazy skies to Massachusetts
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Smoke from wildfires burning in Canada is expected to cast a haze over the skies and diminish air quality in Massachusetts. The sun is out across much of western Massachusetts on Wednesday however, the sky is very hazy from wildfire smoke. This is wildfire smoke high in the atmosphere from Canada. The smoke gets caught in the upper levels of the jet stream and gets carried east, giving the smoke here in New England. Exposure to poor air quality can lead to headaches, irritated eyes, coughing, and difficulty breathing, especially for those with respiratory conditions like asthma. Springfield to take action against illegal ‘Gas Station Weed'
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield is cracking down on illegal 'Gas Station Weed' throughout the city. Springfield woman turns herself in for Old Navy merchandise theft in South Windsor On Wednesday, Mayor Domenic Sarno, along with other city officials, will announce a new ordinance that's aimed at illegal 'Gas Station Weed.' This type is targeting youth and putting the public's health at risk. The announcement is set to take place at 2:30 p.m. at Springfield City Hall. The State House News Service states that 'Gas Station Weed' is not the same cannabis that is sold at licensed dispensaries, and is often unregulated. They are advertised as a legal hemp product under federal law, but they offer the same kind of high as cannabis. Hemp is defined as cannabis that has no more than 0.3% Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the primary psychoactive compound of marijuana, by dry weight at the time of harvest. This type of hemp-based product has been around for about six years, but has become more popular recently. They are marked as things like 'Delta-8,' 'Delta-10' or 'THC In A Bottle,' and often come in bright packaging, which is sometimes meant to mimic the look of legal products. On Wednesday, a bill set to reform the Cannabis Control Commission will go before the House of Representatives after years of controversies and complaints from local business owners. The bill is now cleared through two committees and is poised to pass the House. The bill places the commission entirely under Governor Healey, which means the five-person board would go down to three appointed commissioners, with one of them a full-time chair. The bill would regulate and tax the sale of hemp-based and CBD gummies and drinks, and open the door to retail-only medical marijuana businesses. The City of Springfield states that no one should sell, cultivate, deliver, or otherwise commercially distribute marijuana products within the city without first obtaining a marijuana operating permit issued annually by the Department of Health and Human Services. Only owners of establishments with a permanent, nonmobile location in the city can apply for an operating permit at the specified location. The fee for a marijuana operating permit is $2,000 annually. Drunk driving crash in Franklin kills mother and young girl
FRANKLIN, Mass. (WWLP) – The mother of the young girl who was killed in an alleged drunk driving crash last week has also died. Chicopee woman charged with arson following Belcher Street fire The Memorial Day weekend crash in Franklin killed five-year-old Krisha Patel and badly injured her mother and brother. Police say 21-year-old James Blanchard caused the crash pleaded not guilty to charges of motor vehicle homicide, drunken driving, and negligent operation. The death of the mother, 38-year-old Minaben Patel, was announced Tuesday, according to NBC Boston. There was no update on the condition of Patel's son, Krisha's brother, on Tuesday. The father, who was driving, was also hurt but was released from the hospital after treatment. Prosecutors say the family was on their way to the son's birthday party at the time of the crash.
