Russian strike kills 12 Ukrainian soldiers during training amid peace talks uncertainty
At least 12 Ukrainian service members were killed and more than 60 were injured in a Russian missile strike on the location of a Ukrainian army training unit on Sunday, according to a statement from the Ukrainian Ground Forces.
The strike occurred at 12.50pm, the statement said, emphasising that no formations or mass gatherings of personnel were being held at the time. An investigative commission was created to uncover the circumstances around the attack that led to such a loss in personnel, the statement said.
The training unit is located to the rear of the 1,000km active front line, where Russian reconnaissance and strike drones are able to strike.
Ukraine's forces suffer from manpower shortages and take extra precautions to avoid mass gatherings, as the skies across the front line are saturated with Russian drones looking for targets.
'If it is established that the actions or inaction of officials led to the death or injury of servicemen, those responsible will be held strictly accountable,' the Ukrainian Ground Forces' statement said.

Ukraine invited to Nato summit in The Hague this month
Ukraine has received an invitation to the coming Nato summit in The Hague, Netherlands, President Volodymyr Zelensky told journalists on Monday. 'We have been invited to the Nato summit. I think that is important,' Zelensky said. The invitation was extended during his meeting with Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte in Vilnius, Lithuania. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has been tasked with preparing the meeting. Zelensky did not say whether he would travel to the Netherlands himself. The summit of the member states of the Nato military alliance is expected to take place in The Hague in just under three weeks. Ukraine has been fighting a Russian invasion with Western support for more than three years. Moscow has demanded a ban on Kyiv joining Nato. Preventing Kyiv from joining Nato, which is enshrined in the country's constitution, is one of the Kremlin's main reasons for having launched the assault on its neighbour.

German police start search in Portugal near site of Madeleine McCann's 2007 disappearance
German police investigating the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann are to carry out fresh searches near the Portuguese holiday resort she was last seen 18 years ago, UK police said on Monday. The three-year-old disappeared from her bed while on holiday with her family in the Praia da Luz resort, in southern Portugal, on May 3, 2007. She has not been seen since. The main suspect in the case is Christian Brueckner, who is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman in Portugal in 2005. He is under investigation on suspicion of murder in the McCann case but has not been charged. He spent many years in Portugal, including in Praia da Luz, around the time of the child's disappearance. Brueckner has denied any involvement in her disappearance. 'We are aware of the searches being carried out by the BKA (German federal police) in Portugal as part of their investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann,' the Metropolitan Police in London said in a statement. 'The Metropolitan Police Service is not present at the search, we will support our international colleagues where necessary,' it added, without giving more details.
