Russell Westbrook won't exercise $3.5 million option for next season, AP source says
Russell Westbrook will not be exercising his $3.5 million player option with the Denver Nuggets for next season and will instead become a free agent, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Friday.
The decision doesn't necessarily mean that Westbrook won't be back with the Nuggets, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because neither side revealed the decision publicly.
NBA reporter Marc Stein first reported Westbrook's decision, which was later confirmed by ESPN and The Denver Post, among others.
Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists for the Nuggets this season — his 17th in the NBA — and helped Denver reach the second round of the playoffs, falling in seven games to eventual Western Conference champion Oklahoma City.
He underwent surgery after the season to repair multiple ligament tears in his right hand, an issue he played through during the season. At that time, Westbrook posted in his newsletter than he was 'grateful for everyone's support all year and I can't wait to be back out there at 100% soon. The comeback is already in motion.'
That would indicate that he is planning to play somewhere next season.
Westbrook is a nine-time All-Star, nine-time All-NBA selection and won the MVP award after the 2016-17 season. He's also part of the NBA's 75th anniversary team and has averaged 21.2 points and eight assists per game over his career.

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — His hair is speckled with gray. Even if he remains a fan favorite in some circles, when picks to win the U.S. Open were being made, not many included 44-year-old Adam Scott. Once third-round action at Oakmont wrapped up Saturday, though, the list of the top 10 names on the U.S. Open leaderboard was made up of two kinds of players: Those who had never won a major. Woeful Rockies absorb 2 records for futility with 19 whiffs and worst 70-game mark in modern era
ATLANTA (AP) — Kyle Farmer just shrugged when asked about being part of a Colorado team that just made MLB history with the worst 70-game record in the modern era. 'We don't care,' Farmer said after Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves left the Rockies with a 13-57 record. The Rockies surpassed the 1932 Boston Red Sox, who were 14-56, for the worst 70-game mark since 1901. 'I mean, there's nothing we can do about it,' Farmer said. 'It is what it is. We've just got to show up tomorrow and play. There's nothing you can really say about it except that if it happens, it happens.' The Rockies made more inglorious history by setting a franchise nine-inning record with 19 strikeouts. That's a lot of futility for one team to absorb in one day. The 19 strikeouts by Braves pitchers also set an Atlanta record for a nine-inning game. Spencer Strider recorded 13 strikeouts in six innings, followed by relievers Rafael Montero and Dylan Lee, who combined for six more whiffs. The only bright spot for the Rockies was the encouraging start by rookie right-hander Chase Dollander, a native of Evans, Georgia, who allowed four runs, three earned, in six innings. The Rockies entered Saturday's schedule with 10 fewer wins than the Chicago White Sox, who have the second-worst record in the majors. Matthew Boyd has been a key performer in his 1st season with the Chicago Cubs
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs are on top of the NL Central with a depleted rotation. The quiet consistency of Matthew Boyd is a major reason for their success. Boyd has pitched at least six innings and allowed three earned runs or fewer in 10 of his 14 starts with his new team. The left-hander tossed six innings of one-hit ball in Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. 'He continues to just do an excellent job and put us in position to win games,' manager Craig Counsell said. Chicago is missing three key starting pitchers because of injuries. Shota Imanaga could return by the end of June, but Justin Steele is out for the season after he had elbow surgery. Javier Assad is trying to come back from an oblique issue. Amid those issues with the rotation, Boyd just keeps sailing along for the Cubs — particularly at Wrigley Field. He is 6-0 with a 2.25 ERA in six home starts this year. 'Pitching at Wrigley is really special,' Boyd said. 'Getting to play in this environment, every outing, you know, you go out there, there's so much energy from the fans. The only hit Boyd allowed on Saturday was Andrew McCutchen's one-out drive in the first inning for his seventh homer. He retired 14 in a row after McCutchen went deep. 'You just go keep pitching, right?' Boyd said. 'Whether it's a home run or a walk or even a strikeout, something good, you just continue to go out and keep doing what you expect of yourself when the ball's in your hand.'
