Asia American-style professional wrestling is gaining momentum in China, where Chinese history and music are woven into standard pro wrestling fare. June 6, 2025, 5:16 AM EDT By Janis Mackey Frayer BEIJING — The music blared and the crowd whooped as Alexis Lee strutted across the stage toward the ring. At just 5 feet tall, the wispy professional wrestler was dwarfed by heftier contenders, so to make her point, she pushed a spectator over in his chair and growled through her skeleton face paint. The crowd loved it. 'It's like the circus but with athletics,' Lee, a 30-year-old Singaporean, told NBC News. 'So it's entertaining, and live drama too. It's just fun.' While martial arts have a deep history in China, professional wrestling — with its raucous theatrics, shiny tights and body slams — is still fighting for recognition here. But on a recent Saturday night at a live events venue in Beijing, a special six-match bout billed as the 'Battle of the Decade' showed how far pro wrestling has come and its potential in the massive Chinese entertainment market. 'People are really starting to take pro wrestling — Chinese pro wrestling — seriously,' said Adrian Gomez, the American founder of Middle Kingdom Wrestling, one of the few pro wrestling organizations in China, and the man of the night. 'I feel this is the pinnacle of 10 years of really hard work,' said Gomez, 37, whose first-ever wrestling event in 2015 failed to draw a single paying spectator. For this event, there were all the alter egos and over-the-top moves of American-style pro wrestling that have made WWE a global brand. For the harder-to-win Chinese market, wrestlers have woven Chinese history and music into standard pro wrestling fare. Alberto Curry, from Atlanta, is better known on the Asia pro wrestling circuit as Zombie Dragon for the leathery dragon mask with wing tips that he wears. Curry admits it took some experimentation to determine what a Chinese audience wants to see. 'Nobody reacted to being a bad guy, which is weird,' a masked Curry, 36, said in an interview. 'Then I switched it, and people immediately took to it.' One of the obstacles to acceptance in China is that officials have appeared unsure whether to classify pro wrestling as actual fighting or entertainment, according to Ho Ho Lun, who was squaring off against Chinese wrestling legend The Slam in the evening's main event. 'For many years, there were no Chinese talents,' said Lun, 36, a former WWE wrestling star from the Chinese territory of Hong Kong. 'People used to only watch on TV until they found out, 'Oh, there's actually a place I can go and watch it for real.'' WWE tried breaking into the Chinese market back in 2016, and more recently signed a livestreaming deal with a mainland platform. The reach is limited, according to market intelligence firm S&P Global, as less than 10% of Chinese households with internet access have ever tuned in. 'The thing about wrestling is that it can be anything you want it to be,' said Gomez, who moved on a whim from Arizona to the northern Chinese city of Harbin 15 years ago to work as an English teacher. 'There weren't really any local leagues for pro wrestling,' he said. 'I think we've found a way to please and make Chinese people feel proud of the wrestling that's building up here.' For wrestlers, it's a fully hands-on experience, from getting ready to adjusting each other's costumes to selling their own branded merchandise before and after the show. They even helped build the ring for the event. Few felt what was at stake more than Wang Tao, who grew up in rural China and is considered a rising star among pro wrestlers. Wang rehearsed moves with his Dubai-based wrestling partner Shaheen Alshehhi and, wearing no shirt and silver streaks in his hair, quietly paced a hallway close to the ringside. 'I'm a little nervous,' he said. 'For me, this is really important.' Throughout the night, the sold-out crowd of nearly 400 people cheered, booed, swore and laughed as wrestlers delivered kung fu kicks and body blows and even spilled out of the ring onto the floor. Ho Ho Lun defeated The Slam to claim the championship belt, notching a victory for the pro wrestling scene here in the process. 'People are looking for new ways to entertain themselves,' wrestling fan Beck Jiang, 32, said of the Chinese market. 'This is a pretty awesome way.' What critics think of F1 movie as they all say same thing about Brad Pitt
Formula 1 fans aren't sure what to expect from the blockbuster summer movie starring 61-year-old Hollywood star Brad Pitt as a driver alongside Britain's Damson Idris The first reviews are in ahead of the hotly-anticipated release of the new Formula 1 movie later this month. There is a lot of hope that the film, starring Brad Pitt, will further boost the popularity of the sport, particularly in the USA. Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, an American former F1 driver who is brought out of retirement by the team owner of APXGP, played by Javier Bardem, to race alongside talented young British starlet Joshua Pearce, portrayed by Damson Idris. It is directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer who last teamed up on Top Gun: Maverick. And Lewis Hamilton also served as a producer, providing Hollywood filmmakers with crucial details of what the F1 paddock is really like to help them make the movie as authentic as possible. Filmed largely on location at real-life races, Hamilton also features on screen alongside his fellow F1 drivers up and down the grid. They were all treated to a special screening of the movie at last month's Monaco Grand Prix and spoke positively about it afterwards. The F1 movie is in cinemas at the end of June, but the first reviews are now in from critics who have been given early access. And everyone who has posted online about it so far seems to have been left very impressed by the finished product. The film has received widespread praise from critics, with the main stars in particular getting positive reactions. That's despite concerns over the casting of 61-year-old Pitt in the lead role, given his age. Maude Garrett, from Nerdist, said the film is "so freaking good", adding: "It has all the adrenaline, heart, pacing, story and character that completely fleshes out this movie into excellence. I can only imagine how much more I would love this movie if I was a fan of F1 racing. Maybe I am now?" And Erik Davis, a Rotten Tomatoes contributor, said: "The F1 movie hits the gas and doesn't stop. The races are epic, the sound design, editing, cinematography, performances and music are all top notch. You definitely feel shades of Top Gun: Maverick in that it plays like an old school summer blockbuster. What a ride." For Hamilton, the most important reviews were from his peers as he said: "I really care what the drivers think and I wanted them to think highly of it. I think the great thing is the sound is great, the image is incredible. It's something that's never been done in Formula 1 before, so it's something I'm really proud of."

Beckham was then heard replying: "It was incredible, thank you. It was very kind.' The emails - some of which the former footballer later claimed had been doctored - saw Beckham allege that he "didn't care about being knighted" before branding the snub "a disgrace". "I expected nothing less," he is alleged to have written. "It's a disgrace to be honest and if I was American I would of (sic) got something like this 10 years ago." The former England skipper than took aim at the other big names that had been honoured by the late Queen that year, including Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins who received an OBE. "For what?," Beckham is alleged to have asked after seeing her name on the list. "Singing at the rugby and going to see the troops." While his heroics on the pitch and hard work as a philanthropist have seen fans calling for Beckham to be knighted, however, he has certainly not been free from controversy since retiring from football in 2013, which may have damaged his bid for the honour. That year, he was caught up in the Ingenious tax avoidance scheme, but was later cleared of wrongdoing and was added back to the official recommendations list. However, his role as an ambassador for Qatar ahead of the 2022 World Cup also led to uproar, as he was reportedly paid around £150 million to promote the Gulf state prior to the tournament.
