On the record - the best of Ireland's new music releases

Irish Post03-05-2025

NEVER judge a music act by their name.
One might think that Louth/Meath seven-piece The Cacks (yes, I know…) and their debut album, Celebrity , offer a juvenile blend of Blink-182 or Bowling for Soup – over-the-hill frat boys taking the mickey out of subjects that some people regard as almost untouchable.
Not a bit of it. Recorded in Black Mountain Studios, (which rests high up in the Cooley Mountains), Celebrity is one of those pleasant surprises that pop up unannounced and with no fanfare.
In other words, it's grounded work from grounded people — although we'd like to know which member of the band was brave enough to pose for the album cover.
Between songs that veer from rootsy (Remedy, When I Am to Die), reggae (Nom Nom Nom), Americana (Lava Beds, Two Weeks) and pop/funk (the title track, Two Weeks), The Cacks, as befits their name, are all mouth and trousers.
The Cacks have released Celebrity
One songwriter who has been up against the wall is Seán Mulrooney, whose latest album, This Is My Prayer , is the result of many years of living, loving, making music and having your heart shattered into tiny pieces.
Irish music fans with firm memories will know of Mulrooney largely through his involvement with Humanzi, who left Dublin for Berlin many years ago.
Mulrooney stayed in the German capital for 13 years, returning home to not only self-care following the breakdown of a relationship but also to reconnect with his rooted native influences.
As such, the songs are fine examples of folk music infused with hazy psychedelic sensibilities and just the right measure of trad flourishes.
Sean Mulrooney
"Every thought is a prayer, every word is a spell," he sings on Ag Músclaighacht, one of eight compelling tracks on an album that is worth your time and attention.
You can say the same for indie folk band Norabelle and their second album, The Mountain Blinks .
Some 14 years have passed since the band's 2011 debut album (Wren), so you could safely guess that life and its sometimes messy details have got in the way.
Inevitably, the deeply personal songs explore (as lead singer Ken Clarke says) 'themes of memory, grief, and the fragility of life… my own experiences of loss and how those memories shape us, even when they're fleeting or unreliable.'
Norabelle's The Mountain Blinks
Brief or untrustworthy though those memories may be, you can't say the same about the songs, each of which unfolds slowly, truthfully, and elegantly.
In essence, this is mood music, perfect for quiet, reflective moments best experienced at the dimming of the day.
There is history and the usual consequences of lives being lived when it comes to certain bands.
Take Belfast's The Adventures, for instance. In the late '70s, some of the core members used to be in the punk/pop band The Starjets. When tastes changed in the early '80s, The Adventures formed with moderate success, creeping to a halt in 1993.
The Adventures
Fast forward a few decades, and the band's new album, Once More with Feeling , delivers, to the credit of all involved, much more than nostalgia or (even worse) a thirst for former glories.
The songs are sprightly, contemporary, and imbued with an intuitive knack for memorable melodies, perhaps most obviously on tracks such as L.U.C.Y., Song for You, and the impressively Beatles-esque To Whom It Concerns.
New adventures start here? It would seem so.
Explorations of the sonic variety continue with Somebody's Child and their second album When Youth Fades Away .
Cian Godfrey, as he's known to his family and the passport authorities, has been tipping around the fringes for about eight years (we recall single tracks by Somebody's Child being released in 2018/2019), but for some unexplainable reason, he hasn't yet dented the mainstream.
We say 'inexplicable' because (and despite close to 20 million streams on Spotify) there isn't anything on this album that would spook even the wariest of horses.
Somebody's Child
Rather, there is a radio-friendly sheen to the songs that make you think of the following: sold-out venues, sold-out venues and sold-out venues.
The songs also make you think of music acts like The Killers, Kraftwerk, The National, and the quieter moments of Bruce Springsteen.
It adds up to the kind of album that should, by rights, lead to far bigger things for someone who has been knocking on the door too often to be ignored for much longer.

Diddy accused of ‘drugging and raping TV reporter on tour bus' as she demands rapper be extradited to face ‘punishment'

A REPORTER has accused Sean "Diddy" Combs of drugging and raping her after she tried to get an interview in the midst of his sex trafficking trial. Kathi Steininger claimed she was set to tell her dark story on the stand, but broke her anonymity after she was dismissed. 3 Austrian reporter Kathi Steininger has accused Sean 'Diddy' Combs of raping her when she tried to get an interview Credit: Pulse24 3 Combs, seen at the 2022 Billboard awards, allegedly attacked the accuser when she was just 19 Credit: Getty 3 She broke down in tears as she described the alleged attack Credit: Pulse24 Combs, 55, is accused of hiring prostitutes as perverse entertainment for his so-called "freak offs," which were sex parties that had a roster of high-profile guests. He would allegedly ply attendees and sex workers with drugs before filming them in compromising positions, and use the tapes as blackmail. At the center of the charges is his relationship with ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, who broke the story wide open when she sued the mega producer in November 2023. In that suit, she accused her ex-lover of raping and beating her, as well as forcing her to take part in the sometimes days-long freak-offs. After the lawsuit was filed and settled out of court, dozens of alleged victims came forward with legal complaints of their own, where they described harrowing brushes with the rapper. Now, Steininger, who is an Austrian national, has claimed in an interview that she was also targeted by the mega producer when she was just 19 years old. In March 2000, the budding journalist scored an on-camera interview with Combs during his European tour, she told Austrian broadcaster But at some point during the chat, she claims she was separated from her cameraman and given a drink by Combs, which she believes was drugged. Most read in Celebrity The next thing she knew, the then-teenager was allegedly on the back of a tour bus being raped by the musician. She said she felt too out of it to move or cry for help. "There was 100 percent something in it," she said of the drink. "I would never have gone to bed with that man." After the alleged attack, she said she felt too "ashamed" to tell anyone. Steininger claimed she was going to take the stand as part of Combs' ongoing trial, but said her story was out of the statute of limitations because she and Diddy were overseas. After getting that news, she chose to break her anonymity and join the growing chorus of women and men urging for justice. The accuser claimed the alleged attack left her with post-traumatic stress disorder and that she was unable to work. The security guard said he watched in horror after surveillance captured Combs beating up girlfriend Cassie as he wore nothing but a towel. Diddy locked eyes with us as he entered the courtroom - inside the trial of the decade By Israel S-Rodriguez, Senior News Reporter at The U.S. Sun: The federal sex trafficking trial of Sean 'Diddy' Combs began with jury selection on May 5. Combs is standing trial at the Southern District of New York Courthouse in Lower Manhattan - an intimidating federal courthouse where the cases of Ghislaine Maxwell, Donald Trump, and Bernard Madoff, among others, were tried. Once a powerful founder of a music and business empire, Combs has been reduced to a defendant, inmate 37452-054, stripped of his mogul status, and now standing trial on five federal charges with the full wrath of the United States government against him. When I attended Day 3 of jury selection at the federal courthouse on May 7, the buzz around the start of the trial was palpable. Hours before the courthouse opened its doors, more than a dozen reporters and members of the public stood in line in hopes of securing a seat in the gallery for the high-profile trial. As you walk through the glass door entrance of the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse, you are met by bulletproof vest-clad court officers. All visitors must separate their electronic devices from their personal belongings, which are passed through a metal detector. Visitors walk through a metal detector before a court officer hands them a poker chip. The courthouse uses a poker chip system to sort the number of electronic devices visitors are in possession of. Electronic devices, such as Bluetooth-powered headphones, voice recorders, laptops, cellphones, and smart watches, are confiscated before you're allowed to enter the courthouse's main hallway. As about a half-dozen reporters and I waited in the gallery for jury selection, we witnessed how Combs entered the courtroom shackle-free. Combs entered with his hands pressed together, greeted his defense team before he examined the gallery, and locked eyes with reporters and potential jurors. The 55-year-old disgraced Bad Boy Records executive was attentive and engaged with his counsel as they grilled dozens of potential jurors. As jury selection wrapped up for the day, Combs embraced each of his female defense attorneys before he mouthed "thank you" to a handful of supporters in the gallery. I attended trial again as opening statements got underway on May 12 and the world media waited anxiously outside the federal courthouse before the sun rose in Lower Manhattan. A line stretched down the block from the federal courthouse as some members of the media and from the public camped out overnight to try to obtain a coveted seat inside the gallery. At least three overflow rooms were made available for reporters and the public, who are eager to witness the prosecutions case against the music mogul. At least half a dozen members of Combs' family arrived at the courthouse as spectators filed in single order to enter the federal building to turn over all their electronic devices. Combs' trial is being held on the 26th floor in Judge Arun Subramanian's courtroom and is expected to last for eight weeks. We'll bring it all to you on The U.S. Sun.

After Dolly Alderton's party, I decided to ditch the impostor syndrome that's dogged me my whole life

Brace yourselves for some heavy duty name dropping. I promise it will be worth it. The other week I went to London for a party held in honour of my writer friend Dolly Alderton . Dolly has been writing in the Sunday Times Style magazine for a decade now. To mark this milestone the newspaper threw her a fabulous shindig, sponsored by Tiffany & Co, in a swanky Italian restaurant in Mayfair called Sparrow. The party was pure London glamour. There were flowers everywhere and an actual olive tree growing in the middle of the room. I watched the celebrity guests arrive, trying to bury my rising impostor syndrome and remain, as the kids say, nonchalant. 'Richard E Grant!' I whispered to myself non-nonchalantly as the star of Withnail & I walked in. 'Helen Fecking Fielding!' I muttered into my mocktail as the Bridget Jones creator entered the room. Also present: Emma Forrest, a writer I've admired for years; Caroline O'Donoghue, the best-selling Cork author; Self Esteem , the incomparable pop star; and Dawn O'Porter, the brilliant writer and television presenter. Another Cork author, Louise O'Neill, was also at the party, looking smoking hot in a little black dress. As we stood chatting, a handsome man approached us. He introduced himself as Nick Hornby. 'Can I talk to you two?' he asked. 'I don't know a sausage here'. (By sausage he meant people. It's a London thing.) READ MORE Now, I've interviewed Nick Hornby before and this charming man in the white jacket with pink streaks looked nothing like the author of High Fidelity and About A Boy. He looked about half Hornby's age for a start. Also, he said provocative things like 'I'm only interested in art and homosexuals,' which is fair enough but not a very Real Nick Hornby thing to say. Then he confessed to myself and Louise that he thought he might have been invited to the party by mistake, having as he did, the same name as the famous author. 'Now can you tell me about Dolly Alderton?' he asked, as we gasped. [ Róisín Ingle: Aggressive befriending is great. It's just led to the most amazing, vol-au-vent-including experience Opens in new window ] We recovered enough to tell him all about Dolly. About her former dating column and current Dear Dolly advice page in Style. About her late, lamented High Low podcast with Pandora Sykes and wonderful books including bestseller Everything I Know About Love. We told 'Nick Hornby' about Dolly's acclaimed novels Ghosts and Good Material and informed him that the New York Times had named Good Material one of their 10 best books of 2024. We explained that she was the writer of the upcoming Netflix adaptation of Pride and Prejudice starring Olivia Colman. Then we marvelled quietly at his chutzpah. I could write a whole other column about the Italian feast that was served that night: the sharing plates piled with salads and pasta and meatballs and arancini and veal and branzino and outsize chocolate truffles. There were fancy pens and notepaper on the tables and guests were encouraged to write a problem for Dolly to answer after dinner. Louise and I wondered which of our problems to write down. Then inspiration struck and I wrote this, pretending to be Other Nick Hornby: Dear Dolly, My name is Nick Hornby. (Not that Nick Hornby.) I think I may have been invited here by mistake. What should I do? Love and congrats, Nick Hornby (not that one) After dinner, Dolly stood up and read out some problems. When she got to the Nick Hornby one, Other Nick Hornby looked thrilled instead of mortified, which you'd imagine your average interloper might be. He laughed even when the person sitting opposite him complained that he'd brought three Actual Nick Hornby books to the party to be signed. Dolly was typically gracious and inclusive in her advice to Other Nick Hornby. 'Is there a chance you've been invited here by mistake, Other Nick Hornby? Yes! But I'm so glad you're here,' Dolly declared and we all cheered. I was so glad I was there. Glad that I had bonded with Dolly and her good friend Lauren at the Borris Festival of Writing and Ideas in Co Carlow all those years ago. I stayed until kicking-out time, chatting with Self Esteem about inequities in the music industry and with Emma Forrest about her amazing-sounding new novel and, best of all, with dear Dolly, one of the funniest, kindest, most talented people I have the pleasure to know. The final few stragglers went on to Tramp nightclub, and while I was tempted – I mean, Tramp nightclub! – I went off with Dolly to get a taxi. I thought about/googled Other Nick Hornby all the way back to my digs. It turns out he's a celebrated sculptor with a work on display in Westminster called Power Over Others Is Weakness Disguised as Strength. From one angle the sculpture looks like Richard I on horseback, from the other it looks like a metal squiggle, which all seemed very on brand for Other Nick Hornby. That night in the taxi, I decided to ditch the impostor syndrome that has dogged me my whole life. Other Nick Hornby, an actual impostor, displayed zero impostor syndrome and it worked out fine for him. Or maybe impostor syndrome is strength disguised as weakness. Either way, what a night.
