Hampden County Sheriff's Office staff trains year-round with dive team

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Despite the winter season, members of the Western Massachusetts Regional Dive Team, including staff from the Hampden County Sheriff's Office, continue to train to ensure they are prepared for water-related emergencies.

This month, the team conducted training sessions at the Westfield State University pool, refining essential dive techniques.
With assistance from Myra Ahern of Westfield State University, the team practiced fundamental skills such as donning and doffing gear and mask clearing. They also tackled more advanced scenarios, including handling entanglements and performing self-rescue maneuvers.
Off-season training is a crucial component of the dive team's readiness, allowing them to maintain their expertise and stay prepared for emergency situations throughout the year. The Western Massachusetts Regional Dive Team plays a vital role in search and rescue operations, often responding to incidents involving bodies of water across the region.
By continuing their training year-round, the team reinforces its commitment to keeping communities safe, ensuring that its members are always ready to respond when needed.

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Smoke from wildfires burning in Canada is expected to cast a haze over the skies and diminish air quality in Massachusetts. The sun is out across much of western Massachusetts on Wednesday however, the sky is very hazy from wildfire smoke. This is wildfire smoke high in the atmosphere from Canada. The smoke gets caught in the upper levels of the jet stream and gets carried east, giving the smoke here in New England. Winds push smoke from Canadian wildfires south into US and compromise air quality The smoke may be noticeable in New England until Friday. If you have any photos or videos, email us at ReportIt@ An air quality alert has been issued for Hampden County until 11 p.m. The state has several air quality sensors in western Massachusetts, one in Ware near the Quabbin, one at Westover in Chicopee, and one at the State Police Barracks in Springfield. These sensors track five major air pollutants: ground-level ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and aerosols. Exposure to poor air quality can lead to headaches, irritated eyes, coughing, and difficulty breathing, especially for those with respiratory conditions like asthma. Young children, seniors, and pregnant women are also at a higher risk. To check the air quality where you live, visit When the reading reaches 201, the air is considered 'very unhealthy.' At the 'unhealthy' level, the EPA warns that some may experience health effects, while those who are considered more sensitive — children, the elderly, those who are pregnant, and those with health complications — may experience more serious health effects. Free concert lineup announced for The Big E Fair in September From 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., general admission tickets to New England's Great State Fair are on sale for only $10 with a $0.75 fee. Regular ticket prices cost $21.50. There is a limit of eight tickets per order. The discounted tickets are available online only at This Flash Sale is a way for the Eastern States Exposition to say thank you to attendees for helping make last year's fair memorable, as they had the best attendance to date, with numbers reaching a record-setting 1,633,935.
