Long before the likes of "Inception", "Interstellar" and "Oppenheimer", writer-director Christopher Nolan was bending our brains with his 2000 neo-noir thriller "Memento."
Guy Pearse stars as Leonard Shelby, a man who suffers from anterograde amnesia — resulting in short-term memory loss — who culls together Polaroid photographs, handwritten notes and his own tattoos to uncover the perpetrator who murdered his wife, Catherine (Jorja Fox).
And if it sounds like a straightforward thriller, it's anything but. Nolan plays with both style and structure throughout, alternating between black-and-white and color sequences as well as chronological and reverse-chronological order. Altogether, it makes for a dizzyingly excellent watch, with a solid ensemble that includes Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano and Stephen Tobolowsky.

Directed, co-written and co-produced by celebrated South Korean director Park Chan-Wook, this 2016 erotic thriller and crime drama tells the sensual tale of two women: Lady Hideko (Kim Min-hee), a Japanese heiress living a secluded life on a countryside estate, and Nam Sook-hee (Kim Tae-ri), a Korean woman hired to serve as her new handmaiden.
But the maid has a few professional secrets than her CV seemingly let on: She is actually a pickpocket who has been recruited by a conman (Ha Jung-woo) to help him seduce the lady and steal her large fortune.
Inspired by the Victorian novel "Fingersmith" by British author Sarah Waters, Chan-wook uses the book as "the loose inspiration for another visually sumptuous and absorbingly idiosyncratic outing," per critics on Rotten Tomatoes, where the BAFTA-winning thriller has a 96-percent approval rating.

The first of Jennifer Lawrence's four Academy Awards nominations — she would go on to win the Best Actress trophy for her memorable turn in "Silver Linings Playbook" — was for the harrowing 2010 drama "Winter's Bone", which sees the A-lister star as 17-year-old Ree Dolly, an unflinching Ozark Mountain girl tasked with caring for her mentally ill mother while raising her 12-year-old brother Sonny (Isaiah Stone) and 6-year-old sister Ashlee (Ashlee Thompson).
When the already destitute family is at risk of losing their home due to the crimes of her drug-dealing father, Ree is forced to navigate dangerous social terrain to hunt him down and keep a roof over the family's head. Led by a steely, star-making performance by Lawrence, "'Winter's Bone' is a welcome reminder that thrillers don't have to be loud and boisterous to grab the attention and keep it captive," writes film critic James Berardinelli. One of Joaquin Phoenix's most intense performances—and that's saying something—comes courtesy of this 2017 hitman thriller, written and directed to taut perfection by Lynne Ramsay. The actor hauntingly plays Joe, a traumatized hired gun who specializes in rescuing trafficked girls and uses brutal methods against their captors, all while dealing with his own PTSD that stems from his past in the military and his abusive father.
When Joe is tasked with rescuing Nina Votto (Ekaterina Samsonov), the kidnapped daughter of a New York State senator, he is forced to reckon with not only high-level corruption and abuses of power but also his own childhood trauma.
"Bracingly elevated by a typically committed lead performance from Joaquin Phoenix, ;You Were Never Really Here' confirms writer-director Lynne Ramsay as one of modern cinema's most unique—and uncompromising—voices," reads the critical consensus over at Rotten Tomatoes.

"Contagion" obviously takes on even greater poignancy in a post-COVID society, but it still prompted chills aplenty when it debuted back in 2011: directed by Steven Soderbergh, the medical disaster thriller chronicles the rapid progress of a lethal airborne virus that quickly and terrifyingly turns into a worldwide pandemic. (Sound familiar?)
With a starry ensemble that includes Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet and Gwyneth Paltrow, the film frantically follows the medical community racing to find a cure and control the rising panic, while the rest of society tries not to spin out of control.
Playing into real human fears—one that we, sadly, know all too well — "Contagion" was praised by The New Yorker's David Denby "as a highly controlled film about an out-of-control event, a film so sure-handed and intelligent that it has an invigorating, even an enlightening, quality, as if a blurred picture had suddenly come into focus."

'Overcompensating' star Holmes is getting flooded with DMs from 'mostly gay men'
Holmes wasn't initially meant to play Hailee in the wildly popular Prime Video show, Overcompensating. She originally auditioned to play Carmen, a freshman who forms a quick bond with the show's main protagonist, Benny, played by the creator and star, Benito Skinner. The role of Carmen ultimately went to Wally Baram, but the team loved Holmes, who was born Chelsea Elizabeth Holmes and uses she/they pronouns, and asked her to read for Carmen's self-assured, high-femme, supportive roommate, Hailee. Sign up for the to keep up with what's new in LGBTQ+ culture and entertainment — delivered three times a week straight (well…) to your inbox! The role is a departure from their usual look, which typically consists of men's clothing, and it's not a character they are often asked to read for. "I don't know if it's that my queerness has not let me be able to be in the femme spaces as much, or if it's the fatphobia of this industry, but I was really excited." For the self-tape, Holmes put on a push-up bra, learned how to do makeup, contoured her face, and just had a blast, which perfectly captures the essence of who Hailee is in the show. She watched the tape back and made sure it made her laugh before sending it in, and it was a hit. The casting team loved Holmes's first tape, and after doing a few chemistry reads, she knew the part was hers because during the audition process, she noticed that Skinner was "so bad at hiding his face, and he was laughing so hard." are we out of chasers?? [cc svcubvs scp liarscp] #haileematthews #overcompensating #holmes #aestheticedits #edits #aftereffects #viral #xyzbca #fyp #fypage #foryoupage Shortly after the show aired, Hailee (and the Overcompensating show) was a hit across social media platforms. Less than a week after the season premiered on Prime Video, it became the number 1 show on the platform in the United States and Canada. Her quotable one-liners were clipped for fan edits that were set to a Charli XCX song, a popular K-pop song, or any other popular song gaining momentum on TikTok at the time. The videos are garnering hundreds of thousands of likes on TikTok and spreading like wildfire across X. There were multiple posts across social media that had captioned the videos, saying, "I wish she was my roommate." Coming from the improv world and cutting their teeth in Chicago, Holmes was given room to improvise a lot on the show. "Hailee was already written as the comedic relief in the show, so for Benny to be like 'You can improvise and make her more elevated,' was just really cool." If your entire FYP isn't #HaileeMarieMatthews in #Overcompensating, that pisses #BenitoSkinner off! #GothamTVAwards If your entire FYP isn't #HaileeMarieMatthews in #Overcompensating, that pisses #BenitoSkinner off! #GothamTVAwards She says that family, friends, and fans have sent her jokes that were made in the show, which people think she improvised. Like the moment when she says Carmen's brother's death "pisses [her] off," but makes sure to credit Skinner for that joke. But she did improvise the moment where she says, "Hailee Marie Matthews, also known as 'hmm.'" The joke she's most proud of is when she was fake orgasming on an actor's lap and said, "That's how easy it is to fake it." Skinner and the cast burst out laughing immediately after the camera cut, Holmes recalls, because they didn't know she was going to do that. The whole experience of playing Hailee has been very special to Holmes, and they feel very lucky. "I feel very grateful that the audience is like gays and girls," she says. "My DMs right now, mostly gay men," which she says is shocking because they're "a really picky crowd, I say as someone who a lot of my best friends are gay men, so it means the world that I made them proud." But with all this newfound attention, she's trying to stay humble and live by some sage wisdom her friend imparted to her: "Never let your best set mean too much or your worst set mean too much." The show has yet to be renewed for season 2, but the experience of playing Hailee is something they'll never forget. "I think I'll never get to play a part like that again in my career, unless we get a second season, but I'm forever grateful to Benny and Scott King (the showrunner) for seeing me as an actor," Holmes says. "I'm just really grateful it's helped show my range, because all I want to do is be able to act, so badly." I'm so her #fyp #stofichi #overcompensating #diva #edit #hailee I'm so her #fyp #stofichi #overcompensating #diva #edit #hailee When asked what Holmes hopes for Hailee in season 2, they say that audiences may have picked up on clues about what could be explored, saying, "I gave some hints to it throughout the season, maybe when she's drunk, that Hailee doesn't know everything about her sexuality yet." is now streaming on . - YouTube
