Michigan Tech hires Bill Muckalt to lead 3-time national championship hockey program
HOUGHTON, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Tech has hired Bill Muckalt to lead its three-time national championship college hockey program.
The school announced it signed Muckalt to a five-year contract Thursday, bringing back a former assistant coach who led Lindenwood last season. He led the Missouri-based university to wins over Notre Dame and Wisconsin in its third season of Division I hockey.
Muckalt was the associate head coach from 2017-23 at Michigan, where he was a two-time national champion as a forward before a five-year career in the NHL. He was an assistant coach at Michigan Tech from 2011-15.
The Huskies won national titles in 1962, 1965 and 1975.
'This is a great hockey community and world-class university,' Muckalt said.
Muckalt replaces Joe Shawhan, who was 54-120-29 over eight seasons .

TORONTO (AP) — Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto left Wednesday's game at Toronto in the bottom of the ninth inning after being hit in the area of his protective cup by Bo Bichette's foul tip. 'He's getting checked by the doctor right now,' manager Rob Thomson said of Realmuto after the Phillies lost 2-1 on Alejandro Kirk's game-ending hit. 'It's a pretty good one. He said he's had worse but we'll see. We'll check him out tomorrow.' Realmuto immediately fell forward and stayed down for a few minutes after being struck on the second pitch of the inning. 'That's something you never want to see,' Phillies pitcher Mick Abel said. 'I don't really know how it feels but I can imagine it's extremely painful.' Thomson said Realmuto did not leave the stadium to receive medical attention. The three-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove award winner was in Philadelphia's clubhouse following the game. Realmuto eventually got to his feet and walked gingerly off the field. He was replaced by Rafael Marchán. 'J.T. is a tough guy,' said Jordan Romano, who was on the mound when Realmuto was hit. 'Seeing him go down like that, obviously it had to hurt pretty good. Just hope he's all right.' Realmuto entered play Wednesday batting .225 with five home runs and 22 RBIs. Guardians score 3 in 1st inning to back Ortiz in 4-0 win at Yankee Stadium
NEW YORK (AP) — Angel Martínez hit an early two-run homer, Luis Ortiz earned his first win since April 18 and the Cleveland Guardians beat the New York Yankees 4-0 on Wednesday night. Kyle Manzardo also went deep for the Guardians, who scored three times in the first inning and turned a trio of double plays. Ortiz (3-6) allowed three hits and struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings. Martínez connected in the first on Clarke Schmidt's seventh pitch. Daniel Schneeman added an RBI double later in the inning to help the Guardians win for the third time in their last 11 regular-season trips to the Bronx. José Ramírez doubled in the first, extending his on-base streak to 30 games, and scored on Schneeman's double. Manzardo padded the lead with a solo homer in the eighth. Padres' Yu Darvish continues progressing toward return from inflammation in his pitching elbow
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Padres right-hander Yu Darvish threw off a mound for a third straight day Wednesday as he continues to progress toward a return from inflammation in his pitching elbow that landed him on the injured list to start the season. Manager Mike Shildt said Darvish would return to San Diego for another bullpen session Friday or Saturday and then the club would determine the next steps in his recovery. 'Came out of it feeling good, spoke with him yesterday after the game, he's very encouraged,' Shildt said. 'Came in earlier today and played catch. … He got off the mound again yesterday so it's three days in a row off the mound with some throwing, with a bullpen sandwiched in between. So, recovering, still throwing well. He has a plan for another bullpen and then we'll go from there. All favorable and trending in a good place.' The 38-year-old Darvish went on the injured list March 24 and would be pitching in the majors for his 13th season when he's back. Darvish made a pair of spring training starts but was shut down after his second outing, during which he went four innings and threw 54 pitches against Kansas City on March 13. Darvish is 110-88 with a 3.58 ERA over his big league career after pitching for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan's Pacific League from 2005-11. He had Tommy John surgery on March 17, 2015, and returned to a major league mound on May 28, 2016. He had back, neck and elbow problems last season and was on the restricted list for personal reasons from early July to late August. Darvish won three of four starts in September and was 1-1 with a 1.98 ERA in two starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Division Series. Darvish came to the major leagues in 2012 after agreeing to a $56 million, six-year contract with the Texas Rangers. He was traded to the Dodgers in July 2017, became a free agent after the World Series and signed a $126 million, six-year deal with the Chicago Cubs. Darvish was dealt to San Diego after the 2020 season and in February 2023 agreed to a contract with the Padres that added $90 million guaranteed for a total of $108 million over six years.
