India's top men's doubles pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, entered the quarterfinals of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 with a hard-fought comeback win on Thursday. However, PV Sindhu crashed out in the second round after losing a tough three-game match in Jakarta.Satwik and Chirag, the 2023 champions in Jakarta, showcased steely nerves and sharp execution in the closing stages of a 68-minute battle to edge past world No. 16 Rasmus Kjaer and Frederik Sogaard of Denmark 16-21, 21-18, 22-20. At 14-all, the Indians surged ahead with five consecutive points and held on to force a decider. The third game was a test of nerves. It remained neck-and-neck till the end, with the Danes earning a match point at 20-19. But Chirag's aggressive return drew parity, and a brilliant serve followed by Satwik's sharp placement on match point sealed the win - prompting a fist pump and a roar from the Indian camp.advertisementEarlier in the day, PV Sindhu's bid for a deep run ended in disappointment. The two-time Olympic medallist squandered a 15-11 lead in the decider to go down 22-20, 10-21, 18-21 against Thailand's world No. 8 Pornpawee Chochuwong in a marathon 78-minute encounter.Sindhu had clawed back from 10-16 in the opening game to snatch it 22-20, but Chochuwong dictated terms in the second. In the final game, Sindhu looked in control and led 15-11, only to falter at the finish line with a series of mistimed smashes and unforced errors."I think I should have converted it to a win," Sindhu said after the loss. "I was leading 16-13 in the third set but the conditions were faster, and I had to control a lot more. From there, she took the lead It was anybody's game at 18-all. But overall, I'm happy with my performance. A lot to learn from this match and prepare for the next one."Sathish Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath lost 7-21, 12-21 in just 25 minutes by Thai sixth seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran in mixed doubles. In a first, four Indian chess players in the top 10 rankings
For the first time in history, four Indians are in the top 10 chess rankings. Alongside D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, and R Praggnanandhaa — now regulars among the world's elite — Aravindh Chithambaram has climbed to ninth place with a live rating of 2757.8. The milestone followed Aravindh's victory at the 6th Stepan Avagyan Memorial in Jermuk, Armenia, on Friday, where he edged out his close friend and training partner under coach RB Ramesh, Praggnanandhaa. Both players tied for first place with 6.5 points each after nine rounds, but Aravindh claimed the title due to a superior Sonneborn-Berger score (tiebreak points), due to his stronger performance against higher-ranked opponents. The tournament began with a draw between Praggnanandhaa and Aravindh, and the two remained evenly matched until the final round. Entering the last game, both Indians were tied at 5.5 points after eight rounds, needing a win to secure the title. Praggnanandhaa struck first, defeating Armenia's Robert Hovhannisyan, forcing Aravindh to win his game to clinch the event. Aravindh obliged, overcoming Armenia's Aram Hakobyan with the black pieces to claim the championship. Both players remained undefeated, scoring four wins and five draws each. However, Praggnanandhaa later reflected on a missed opportunity in the second round against Danish GM Jonas Buhl Bjerre, where he had a winning position. 'It was a good tournament for me, but I still missed this one chance in the second round. I could have probably won the tournament had that result gone my way, now it'll probably be tied for the first spot.' Praggnanandhaa told Chessbase India, accompanied by his trainer, Vaibhav Suri. 'Overall happy with my performance, I was mostly well prepared for almost all the rounds, just rue that game against Jonas otherwise I would have been on plus five,' he added. Aravindh's win in Armenia mirrored his earlier title win at the Prague Masters, where he outperformed Praggnanandhaa in a star-studded field featuring Wei Yi, Anish Giri, and Vincent Keymer. While Aravindh took the title, Praggnanandhaa's performance was equally impressive. The 19-year-old now sits sixth in the live ratings (2774.2) and leads the FIDE Circuit standings. With 83.59 points from five events — including wins at the Tata Steel Masters and Grand Chess Tour Romania Classic, a joint-second finish in Prague, third place in GCT Poland Rapid & Blitz, and now second in Armenia — Praggnanandhaa is the frontrunner to qualify for the 2026 Candidates Tournament via the FIDE Circuit. He holds a commanding 42.27-point lead over second-placed Aravindh (41.32 points), who has competed in three events. Both players will next compete at the Uzchess Cup in Uzbekistan, starting June 18, alongside strong players like Ian Nepomniachtchi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, and Arjun Erigaisi.

IND vs ENG: Gill, Gambhir repose faith in India's pacers
The Indian team management is yet to decide which Tests Jasprit Bumrah will feature in during the five-match series in England, but head coach Gautam Gambhir and newly-appointed captain Shubman Gill made it clear that there's enough depth in its pace attack. 'We haven't taken that call, which three games is he going to play,' Gambhir said on Thursday. 'We are going to have a discussion with him and (it will) depend on the series as well. A lot will depend on the results of the series, where the series is heading. That is something which I am sure he is very well aware of as well and that is important.' While announcing the squad for the series last month, the chairman of the selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, said that Bumrah had been advised by medical staff not to risk playing back-to-back Tests. The decision was taken considering his workload management in the wake of his back injury during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney in January. But Gambhir believes that this will also be an opportunity for the pace attack, comprising Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh and Shardul Thakur to stand up and deliver. 'I have said it before during the Champions Trophy (which Bumrah missed) as well, it will give someone the opportunity to put his hand up and we have got enough talent there. I know that he is quality but we have got enough quality apart from him as well in the squad,' the head coach stated. Under the leadership of Gill, the five Tests against England will be India's first in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle, and the young captain too believes that there's enough firepower in the bowling department. 'We have picked enough bowlers and we have a good enough pace battery. A lot of fast bowlers are in a great space to be able to win us Test matches from any situation or any position,' Gill said. 'Obviously, when you have someone like him (Bumrah), depending on how many matches he would play, whenever he would come back and play the match for us, it would be a great sight for us,' the captain said. 'But I think we have a great mix of bowlers and a great set of bowlers who can get the job for the team done,' he added. With Bumrah likely to play just three games and no Mohammed Shami in the squad, it certainly will be a huge challenge for the young bowling unit to make an impact in the English conditions, when the action gets underway in Headingley from June 20.
