Seafront tourist attraction bought by hospitality chain
A seafront tourist attraction which closed suddenly after facing a series of financial problems has been bought by a hospitality chain.
Nightcap, which runs more than 40 venues including The Cocktail Club and Tonight Josephine bars, confirmed it had purchased observation tower Brighton i360 on Tuesday.
Under the agreement, Nightcap takes over the remaining 115-year lease of the i360.
It comes after Brighton and Hove City Council agreed to write off the i360's £51 million debt last month so that it could be sold and get back in business.
Brighton i360 had filed for administration after it failed to find a buyer, just days before Christmas last year, closing with immediate effect and making 109 employees redundant.
Councillor Jacob Taylor, deputy leader of the Labour-run Brighton and Hove City Council, said: 'We are delighted that Nightcap has taken such a keen interest in revitalising the i360, and their passion and commitment to the city is evident. We think this is the best option for the city – giving a fresh start for the attraction, and helping to ensure this important stretch of seafront can thrive.'
Sarah Willingham, founder and chief executive of Nightcap and former Dragon on Dragons' Den, said: 'We couldn't be happier to welcome the i360 to the Nightcap family and delighted that Brighton and Hove City Council has paved the way for us to keep this iconic landmark open.
'We pass the i360 every day and were as disappointed as everyone else when it went into administration and no buyer was found. The impact of its closure would have been catastrophic to our local businesses and a blemish on this important part of the Brighton seafront. We hope we will get the support of our tight knit local community as we embark on this new chapter for the i360.'

Starmer has entered the ‘degeneration' phase. His MPs are in despair
Shortly after the general election, The Daily T – the podcast I present with colleague Camilla Tominey – held a live event for Telegraph readers at our headquarters in central London. It was a very jolly affair, with prosecco on hand as Camilla, Gordon Rayner, our Associate Editor, and I discussed the state of politics and answered questions. The biggest worry in the audience was that Starmer was simply Tony Blair in disguise, and was being 'run' by Labour's most successful Prime Minister in history via his think tank, the Tony Blair Institute. This was nonsense, I suggested. Blair was far too Right-wing for Starmer. Chatting afterwards, a number of attendees came up to me to make a point about what being 'Prime Minister of the country' meant to them. 'We have to give him a chance,' one Conservative voter said. 'He won, it's good to end the chaos, and he is the leader now. As long as he is sensible, we will see how it goes.' This is a very British view of politics and one I wholeheartedly support. The office of Prime Minister is one to be respected, politicians need time to affect change and following the psychodramas of Boris Johnson and the rest a period of calm would be very much welcomed. I wonder how that Conservative voter is feeling now. After a reasonable opening day speech about governing for everyone, Starmer has induced nausea. Freebie gifts revealed that it was still 'one rule for them'. With no discussion or preparation, the Winter Fuel Allowance was scrapped for all but the lowest paid pensioners. A £22 billion 'black hole' appeared to come as a shock to the Chancellor despite every sensible analyst saying before the election that the public finances were shot. The Budget raised taxes after Labour promises that it would not. 'I need to fix the foundations,' Rachel Reeves told voters as the polls started slipping. Starmer agreed. 'Growth' was everything and 'tough Labour' would not be indulging in any U-turns. Even that gargantuan and ever-increasing benefits bill would be tackled. Being controversial can have a point in politics – as long as you stick to the course. Starmer has done the opposite, the lead character in a political tragedy about a man who wanted to be king but did not know why. The PM has confused noise from opponents, backbenchers and pressure groups with the very different purpose of running the country. The result has been strategic chaos – a disaster for anyone residing in Number 10. Where once he was positive about the effects of immigration, now he is talking about 'an island of strangers'. Where the cuts to the Winter Fuel Allowance were an absolute necessity – now they will be at least partially reversed (although when and by how much will be a political running sore for months to come). The two child benefit cap is likely to be lifted. The UK will be in and not in the European Union. I speak to many senior Labour figures every week. They pinpoint the disastrous local elections as the moment Starmer buckled afresh, casting around in desperation for anything that might shift momentum. A caucus of Red Wall Labour MPs, led by Jo White, demanded changes, particularly to disability benefit cuts. 'We will not budge,' Downing Street insisted, exactly as they had done over the Winter Fuel Allowance. Few believe that position will hold. Negative briefings are starting to swirl around Morgan McSweeney, Starmer's chief of staff. Enemies point out, and there are many, that the 'hard choices' approach has given way too easily to 'I'll U-turn if you want me to'. Policies that MPs expended a lot of energy defending are now being abandoned, the quickest way to lose faith on the back benches. Nearly 200 Labour councillors lost their jobs in the May elections, a rich seam of angry activists who blame the man at the top. Starmer and Sweeney go back, to the dark days of the Hartlepool by-election loss in 2021 when Labour was trounced by the Conservatives. Starmer considered quitting and outsourced much of his political thinking to McSweeney, who picked him up and dusted him off. The Corbyn-lite approach that had won the PM the Labour leadership was jettisoned and 'sensible Starmer' took its place, the dry technocrat who would focus on what works. Labour MPs of the modernising tendency fear Corbyn-lite is creeping back. Adrift in a sea of collapsing personal ratings, Starmer is trying his own form of 'back to basics' – the basics of 'all will have jam' Left wing economics. 'We have no idea who is driving the bus,' said one well placed Labour figure on the chopping and changing at the centre. 'It is not about jam today or jam tomorrow. With no growth there is no jam.' Reeves is in an increasingly precarious position. She marched into the gunfire with a degree of political bravery, insisting that her decisions had to be taken to re-energise the economy. My Treasury sources insist there are glimmers of hope that the strategy is working. The first three months of the year saw growth above estimates. Business confidence has started to pick up. In the spending review on June 11, the Chancellor will announce billions of pounds in capital investment in transport hubs, energy, schools, hospitals and research and development. These are the right policies. The PM is striding in the opposite direction, creating a tension between Number 10 and Number 11 that never augurs well for good government. When Labour published its manifesto in 2024, the only person beyond Starmer himself to appear regularly in the glossy photographs was Reeves. Now it would be Angela Rayner, who is noisily demanding more tax rises. Like grief, governments travel through five phases. Euphoria, honeymoon, stability, degeneration, failure. Starmer has managed to leap-frog the first three and has entered 'degeneration' well before the first anniversary of a victory which gave him a 171 seat majority. Even his allies look on baffled, failing to understand that government is difficult, that you cannot gyrate between policy positions and expect appalling poll numbers to improve. Leading requires courage, vision and an ability to communicate. Consistency is the prosaic truth that the Prime Minister has failed to grasp. The policies Reform UK and Nigel Farage have announced this year
After Reform UK's strong performance in May's local elections, Nigel Farage declared it was his party - not the Conservatives - who were now the main opposition to the Labour government. And with the party riding high in the opinion polls - topping YouGov's latest voting intention tracker on 29% to Labour's 21% - it seems the public currently considers Reform as a genuine contender for power. In a bid to capitalise on this and keep the momentum going, Farage has set out a number of policies in recent months. These build on the party's 'Our Contract with You' document it published before the July 2024 general election. Here, Yahoo News UK looks at the main pledges made by Reform UK this year. The winter fuel payment was previously available to anyone over state pension age. But in one of the Labour government's first major policy moves last summer, it limited access to the benefit, which is worth up to £300. The number of pensioners in receipt of the payment fell by around nine million. It was an issue Labour campaigners were challenged about on the doorsteps during the local elections. Starmer subsequently signalled a partial U-turn, saying that "as the economy improves" he wanted to look at widening eligibility. He suggested details will come at a "fiscal event", likely to be the next budget in the autumn. Watch: Economy will have to be 'strong enough' for U-turn on winter fuel, business secretary says Reform has said it will "completely reinstate the winter fuel allowance across the board". The two-child benefit cap, introduced by the Conservatives in 2017, prevents universal credit claimants from receiving additional benefits for a third or subsequent child born after 5 April, 2017. Campaigners say the cap exacerbates child poverty and has had a minimal impact on birth rate or family size. The Child Poverty Action Group has said abolishing it would lift 350,000 children out of poverty and mean another 700,000 were in less deep poverty. And that was what Farage has pledged to do. "Not because we support a benefits culture," he said. "But because we believe, for lower-paid workers, this actually makes having children just a little bit easier for them." Abolishing it would cost £3.5bn. The government has said scrapping it is "not off the table" but the "costs are high". "We are going to make big savings," Farage said as he pledged to get rid of "excessive costs". "If we win the next election, we will scrap net zero, something that is costing the Exchequer an extraordinary £40bn-plus every year. "There will be no more asylum hotels or houses of multiple occupancy. People who come here illegally, across the channel or on the back of lorries will not be allowed to stay. "We will scrap the DEI agenda, which is costing the taxpayer up to £7bn a year throughout the public sector." People start paying income tax after they have earned £12,750. Farage has pledged to lift this to £20,000, saying in April it would "incentivise" more people into work. He admitted on Tuesday this would be "expensive" but that he "genuinely believes" it can be paid for from other savings. The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) questioned this. Stuart Adam, a senior economist at the research institute, said it would cost up to £80bn. "Nigel Farage recommitted to increasing the income tax allowance to £20,000, which depending on details might cost £50bn [to] £80bn, relative to other policies where we might be talking [up to] £3bn each. "As it stands, I don't think they have really set out how they would pay for such big giveaways. Of course, they don't have to do that yet, we're not yet at a general election. But at some point, if they're going to be a party of government, they would have to make those numbers add up." Starmer seized on this, saying Farage's "fantasy" economics will lead to a Liz Truss-style economic meltdown. Reform has pledged to cut taxes on cryptocurrencies. Party chairman Zia Yusuf told reporters on Friday it would reduce capital gains tax on assets such as Bitcoin to 10% - from up to 24% currently - as part of a raft of reforms to how cryptocurrencies are governed. Yusuf, who does not own cryptocurrency, claimed the cut could generate up to £1bn for the Treasury over a decade, and that it would encourage more use of such currency and persuade people to move their assets to the UK. He also said Reform would allow people to pay tax in Bitcoin and establish a "Bitcoin reserve fund" to "diversify" the UK's reserve holdings. The announcement came as Farage said Reform would begin accepting donations in cryptocurrency. Last month, Farage said the NHS shouldn't be funded through tax. "I do not want it funded through general taxation," he said. "It doesn't work. It's not working. We're getting worse bang for the buck than any other country, particularly out of those European neighbours.' However, he refused to say what would pay for it instead, only saying Reform is looking at "how we get there". He has denied wanting to make people pay to visit a doctor. Farage has pledged to renege on Starmer's agreements with the EU and on the future of the Chagos Islands. The latter deal will see sovereignty of the islands handed over to Mauritius and the key Diego Garcia military base leased back for £101m a year. Farage has described it as "the worst deal I've ever seen in my life". The agreement with the EU includes relaxing some border checks and working together in areas such as electricity, security, law enforcement and irregular migration. But Farage said it "betrays the very essence of Brexit". Farage has declined to commit to keeping the "triple lock" on pensions. This guarantees the state pension will rise each year by whichever is highest: the annual rate of inflation, average growth in earnings or 2.5%. He would only say: "The triple lock for pensioners is not something we've addressed as yet. We will, between now and the next election. We are, as you can see, building out our policy platform." The UK seeks to send a message to Moscow as it outlines higher defense spending
LONDON (AP) — The U.K. is about to see the biggest increase in defense spending since the end of the Cold War as it seeks to send 'a message to Moscow,' the British defense secretary said Sunday. John Healey said the Labour government's current plans for defense spending will be enough to transform the country's military following decades of retrenchment, though he does not expect the number of soldiers — currently at a historic low — to rise until the early 2030s. He said plans for defense spending to hit 2.5% of national income by 2027, which amounts to an extra 13 billion pounds ($17 billion) or so a year, were 'on track' and that there was 'no doubt' it would hit 3% in the next parliament in the early 2030s. The government will on Monday respond to a strategic defense review, overseen by Healey and led by Lord George Robertson, a former NATO secretary general and defense secretary in a previous Labour government. It is expected to be the most consequential review since the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, and make a series of recommendations for the U.K. to deal with the new threat environment, both on the military front and in cyberspace. Like other NATO members, the U.K. has been compelled to take a closer look at its defense spending since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. 'This is a message to Moscow,' Healey told the BBC. 'This is Britain standing behind, making our armed forces stronger but making our industrial base stronger, and this is part of our readiness to fight, if required.' U.S. President Donald Trump has also piled pressure on NATO members to bolster their defense spending. And in recent months, European countries, led by the U.K. and France, have scrambled to coordinate their defense posture as Trump transforms American foreign policy, seemingly sidelining Europe as he looks to end the war in Ukraine. Trump has long questioned the value of NATO and complained that the U.S. provides security to European countries that don't pull their weight. Healey also said Russia is 'attacking the U.K. daily' as part of some 90,000 cyber attacks from state-linked sources that were directed at the U.K,'s defense over the last two years. A cyber command to counter such threats is expected to be set up as part of the review. 'The tensions are greater but we prepare for war in order to secure the peace,' he said. 'If you're strong enough to defeat an enemy, you deter them from attacking in the first place.' While on a visit to a factory on Saturday where Storm Shadow missiles are assembled, Healey said the government would support the procurement of up to 7,000 U.K.-built long-range weapons and that new funding will see U.K. munitions spending hitting 6 billion pounds in the coming years. 'Six billion over the next five years in factories like this which allow us not just to produce the munitions that equip our forces for the future but to create the jobs in every part of the U.K.,' he said. Robert Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary for the main opposition Conservative Party, welcomed the government's pledge to increase defense spending but said he was 'skeptical' as to whether the Treasury would deliver. He called on the government to be more ambitious and raise spending to 3% of national income within this parliament, which can run until 2029. 'We think that 2034 is a long time to wait, given the gravity of the situation,' he told Sky News.
