Civic poll aspirants expect admin to mark wards along natural boundaries
Pune: Aspirants across party lines and those looking to contest as independents have started preparations for the upcoming civic polls following the state govt's announcement for a detailed schedule for the formation of wards.
Many hopefuls are looking forward to tap upcoming festivals and special days to reach out to their voter base. Others have expressed apprehensions over the possibilities of abrupt breaking up of wards during the process of delimitation which may hamper their prospects.
The areas under Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) are expected to be divided into 42 wards for the forthcoming polls, each with four members. The civic administration has started the delimitation process.
A senior former corporator from Congress said that the administration should follow natural boundaries like rivers, nullahs, hills, or a main road to define the ward boundaries.
"However, it was observed that in a recent such exercise, the wards were carved up abruptly to favour those in power. We strongly objected to the ward formation at that time, and we will raise objections now too if the wards are not properly formed," he added.

A Shiv Sena (UBT) member said that many discrepancies were noticed in the formation of wards in Kothrud and Satara Road during the delimitation process carried out in 2022.
Housing societies were put into into two separate wards, and members of the same families were listed in the same manner.
"We want the administration to strictly avoid such instances for the forthcoming polls. The ward formation holds a key in defining the voter base, the process should not have any interference," he added.
Sources from the city's political circles said that the contest is expected to be intense between Mahayuti and MVA, though both alliances are yet to finalise the seat-sharing formula.
A BJP functionary and an aspirant said that there will be huge competition for tickets and the party should identify deserving candidates. The aspirant said that he already started meeting citizens in his area and held a function for the women residents on the occasion of "Vat-Pournima" festival on Tuesday.
Insiders from all prominent parties said that many former corporators are looking ahead to re-join the fray. An aspirant from the Baner area said that the elections were supposed to take place in 2022 but were delayed for various reasons.
"We are expecting decent formation of wards without any favouritism and undue pressure from political parties," an aspirant said.
What's On Their Minds?
Stick to natural boundaries during ward formation
Do not split a housing society, a slum pocket, or a vasti into separate wards
Avoid interference of political parties and leaders
Restrict abrupt formation of wards
Consult locals before fixing boundaries of wards

Israel-Iran war: Netanyahu warns Iran ‘more is on the way' after Tel Aviv strikes; defence minister says ‘Iran crossed red lines'
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Friday that Israel would press ahead with its military campaign against Iran, issuing a stern warning to Tehran following a dramatic escalation in hostilities. 'More is on the way,' Netanyahu said in a video address directed at the Iranian people. "In the past 24 hours, we have taken out top military commanders, senior nuclear scientists, the Islamic regime's most significant enrichment facility and a large portion of its ballistic missile arsenal," he declared. 'The regime does not know what hit them, or what will hit them. It has never been weaker.' His remarks came after Iran launched a large-scale missile barrage at Israel late Friday, setting off air raid sirens across the country and raising fears of a broader regional conflict. The unprecedented exchange marks a dangerous new phase in the long-simmering tensions between the two nations. Earlier Friday, Israel had carried out strikes on more than 200 military and nuclear sites across Iran. The offensive, according to Israeli officials, was in direct response to Tehran's ballistic missile attack, which Iran claimed was retaliation for previous Israeli actions. The Islamic regime, which has oppressed you for almost 50 years, threatens to destroy my country, the State of Israel. The objective of Israel's military operation is to remove the nuclear threat and ballistic missile threat to Israel.' Israeli defence minister : 'Iran crossed red lines' Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz also responded strongly to Iran's missile attack, which targeted civilian areas. 'Iran has crossed red lines by daring to fire missiles at civilian population centres in Israel,' Katz said. 'We will continue to defend the citizens of Israel and ensure that the Ayatollah regime pays a very heavy price for its heinous actions.' The tit-for-tat escalation has intensified fears of broader conflict in the region, with international pressure mounting for restraint as both nations double down on their military strategies.

Mumbai ward boundaries for civic election to be notified by Sept 4
Mumbai: The state govt has in its schedule stated that the final ward boundaries for the BMC election will be notified by Sept 4. Apart from the BMC, ward boundaries for Pune and Thane municipal corporations will also be notified by Sept 4, while ward boundaries of other local bodies will be finalised by Sept 1. The state govt has asked all municipal commissioners who were tasked with drawing the ward boundaries to follow the schedule issued by the state urban development (UD) department. According to the schedule, the draft ward boundaries will be published from July 22 to 31. Suggestions and objections will be invited, and they will be given a hearing from Aug 1 to 11. "Taking into account the suggestions and objections, changes will be made, and then the final ward boundaries will be sent to the State Election Commission (SEC). This will be done from Aug 12 to 18. Once the SEC approves the final draft, the new ward boundaries will be notified after approval of the EC. The notification will be published from August 19 to September 4 for Mumbai, Thane, and Pune," officials said. "Officials are also expected to carry out site visits of the electoral wards to see the on-ground situation and plot the wards on maps. Once that is done, the initial draft will be sent to the SEC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Then the revised draft will once again be sent to the SEC for final approval," the official said. The BMC will have 227 wards in the upcoming election. The state govt early this week decided to go ahead with 227 wards for Mumbai, reversing the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) decision to increase the wards to 236. With no increase in the number of wards, existing boundaries could see some marginal changes by the BMC based on the norms for ward boundary formation laid down by the state govt. The MVA had increased the number of wards to 236, citing an increase in population, but the Mahayuti govt said the latest census figures of 2011 will be considered, and so the number of wards will not be increased. An order issued by the state UD department directing municipal commissioners to finalise the new draft ward boundaries states that ward boundaries can be drawn only as per the latest census. Since this is done on the basis of population, the number of voters or the current number of residents in that area cannot be taken into account. ‘Gentle, hardworking man': PM meets Vijay Rupani's family
Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a host of BJP leaders on Friday met the family members of former chief minister Vijay Rupani and offered their condolences. Rupani was among the victims of the Boeing Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday. The PM remembered Rupani as a gentle, hardworking man and a committed member of the party. Rupani's wife Anjali, accompanied by their daughter Radhika, arrived on Friday from London. Their son Rushabh is expected to arrive in the early hours of Saturday after which it will be decided whether the last rites will be held in Gandhinagar or their hometown Rajkot, the family members said. Meanwhile, Rupani's sister provided her DNA samples to the authorities on Friday afternoon, so that the formalities required for the handover of his mortal remains could be completed. Pictures released by the state govt showed PM standing solemnly beside a visibly distraught Anjali Rupani and their family members. The PM later posted on his X handle, "I am not ready to accept that Rupani is no more with us." After meeting the Rupani family, the PM said, "We worked shoulder to shoulder in many challenging times. Chief minister Bhupendra Patel and other state BJP leaders also paid tributes to the former chief minister. "His contribution to the overall development of Gujarat will always be remembered. May God give courage to the bereaved family members," Patel said. Apart from the PM and CM, a large number of leaders, sitting and former ministers, MPs, MLAs and senior IAS and IPS officers visited the Rupani family in Gandhinagar and offered their condolences. Senior party leader Nitin Patel, who was deputy CM during Rupani's tenure as CM and shared a special bond with him, said, "Vijay Rupani was loved by people across the state and country. As the deputy CM, I spent several hours with him every day as we took decisions together. He lived a simple life and was a committed member of the party."
