Bridge of Allan rugby star prepares for first final of massive summer
Finn Russell will be hoping to lead his Bath side to success as they take on French outfit Lyon in the Challenge Cup final this evening.
Finn Russell begins what he hopes will be a trophy-laden summer of rugby as he competes in a showpiece European occasion in Cardiff this evening.
The former Wallace High pupil has been in stellar form for his club side Bath this season, orchestrating from the key fly-half spot as the side from the south-west of England embark on a dominating domestic campaign where they have lost only three times in 17 matches.
Before the Premiership play-offs begin next month and the search for an English title begins, Bath will take on French cracks Lyon in the Challenge Cup final at the Millennium Stadium in the Welsh capital.
Bath secured their spot in that final with an away semi-final win against Edinburgh at the Hive earlier this month, with Russell seeing off fellow Stirling player Grant Gilchrist in that contest.
His French counterpart in the Cardiff final, Lyon number ten Léo Berdeu, is the competition's leading scorer with 64 points so far - including two tries - so the Bridge of Allan star will be eager to get on top of that contest.
Meanwhile, Russell's stellar season in the English divisions has seen him nominated for a top award at the conclusion of the season.
He has been put forward in a five-man shortlist for the Premiership Player of the Season award alongside team-mate Thomas du Toit, Tom Willis from Saracens, George Ford from Sale and Russell's fellow British and Irish Lion, Welsh scrum-half Tomos Williams from Gloucester.
After the European final, the matches don't get any less important - with Bath then assured of a play-off semi-final at home on June 6.
A success there would then lead to a final at Twickenham a week later - and the chance for Russell to scoop a second trophy in as many weeks.
Following that, a third British and Irish Lions tour will follow shortly afterwards.
It begins with a warm-up match in Dublin against Argentina before heading Down Under for the tour, with the first Test Match due to take place against the Wallabies in Brisbane on July 19.

Guineas heroes poised for Palace rematch
Field Of Gold might have been even closer than he was to Ruling Court at Newmarket had things played out in his favour, but he showed his worth in the Irish Guineas. The Ruling Court team opted to wait for Epsom, but he was a late absentee as the ground was deemed too soft. As if round two is not enough on its own, Aidan O'Brien's French Guineas winner Henri Matisse joins the battle. 'We took Ruling Court out of the Derby due to the ground, and we can have no excuses with conditions at Ascot,' trainer Charlie Appleby told the Godolphin website. 'It's a very good renewal of the race and the track and trip will suit. We are looking at stepping up in trip at some point, but he has done very little wrong over a mile so far.' The inquest into Field Of Gold's reverse led to Kieran Shoemark being replaced by Colin Keane on the John and Thady Gosden-trained grey at the Curragh, a relationship further solidified with Keane being appointed retained rider for the Juddmonte operation. 'It's going to be a huge race with some huge names and could be the race of the week, but we're happy with Field Of Gold and looking forward to having another crack at the English Guineas winner and seeing how we get on,' said Juddmonte's European racing manager Barry Mahon. 'We won't know if Field Of Gold is a better horse than the one that went to Newmarket until after the race, but he is a horse who should keep improving through the year. 'We had to go to Ireland which was a bit of a diversion, but I think as the year progresses he will keep getting stronger. Whether we will see the difference on Tuesday I'm not sure, but we're happy with him and he's taking a step forward with every start this year and hopefully he can take another step again. 'John has always mentioned the Eclipse for him which is very much still a possibility or we could even give him a break after this and wait for Goodwood, but we will decide all this after the race.' Henri Matisse won at the Breeders' Cup last year for O'Brien and the handler expects both the course and quick ground will suit his charge. 'We always thought he liked fast ground and he proved in America he could handle a bend, so that was one of the reasons he went to France,' said O'Brien. 'I took the blame for him getting beaten in France last year, just the way we rode him, then he went and left that run well behind him next time in America.'

Max Aarons 'close' to Rangers transfer as Russell Martin swoops for former £20million Man Utd target
Bourenmouth full back Aarons was a one-time target for the likes of Man United and Liverpool Rangers are closing in on the signing of Bournemouth full back Max Aarons - according to a report. New Ibrox boss Russell Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell are ramping up Gers transfer drive, with Record Sport revealing that deals already in the offing for Maccabi Tel Aviv forward Dor Turgeman and Leicester City centre-half Conor Coady. And now according to reports in Italy, they are on the brink of snapping up Cherries defender Aarons on loan. The 25-year-old joined the Premier League side from Norwich City for £7million back in 2023 after spending the first five years of his professional career with Norwich City. Aarons - who is a former England youth international - spent the second half of last season on loan in La Liga with Valencia but made just three appearances in all competitions. Prior to his move to Spain, the right-back was linked with a £20million switch to Manchester United and had also previously been touted as a potential target for Liverpool back in 2022. Should Aarons head north of the border to Ibrox, then he would provide competition at right back to Rangers skipper James Tavernier, who has just 12 months remaining on his current contract. Tavernier often found himself out of the team under ex Gers boss Philippe Clement last season, with versatile Dujon Sterling frequently deployed as a right back. The Light Blues are also hoping to strengthen in the left back department on the other side of the pitch. However, they appear to have missed out on reported target Harry Darling. The defender is set to leave Swansea City at the end of his contract on June 30, and was said to be on manager Martin's radar having previously played under him at the EFL Championship club. But reports now state that the 25-year-old is poised to sign a deal with fellow English second tier club Norwich City, where Martin spent eight years as a player between 2010 and 2018.
