AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Students in Richmond, Columbia, Burke and Jefferson counties were recognized at a Leadership and Recognition Luncheon from the Georgia High School High Tech Program on Tuesday, May 13.
The event was held at the Augusta Marriott Convention Center.
The Georgia High School High Tech Program offers youth with disabilities a link to career development experiences designed to meet the workforce demands of the 21st century. It also helps them in the transition from high school to college.
'We want the kids to walk through our doors, to leave and go out and be able to be self-productive and feel good about themselves and what they're doing. It's great to see,' said Michael R. Johnson, District Manager of the District 7 GA Vocational Rehabilitation Agency. 'When I walk into an industry or walk into a store, I see some of my former students working and making a productive living for themselves. This is a self-confidence that they have in themselves, skills that they learn in this program.'
WJBF NewsChannel 6's Barclay Bishop was the MC for the event.

Boys & Girls Club of Greater Augusta get major funding for summer camp

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF)- SRP Federal Credit Union will be presenting a big check to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Augusta to help fund its summer camp. It is for $25k, and it is funding the Oasis Club Summer Camp where it will cover everything the camp provides. The Oasis summer camp host almost fifty kids and this check helps families who couldn't afford to pay for summer camp. The VP of development for Boys and Girls Club of Greater Augusta, tells me what else this SRP check supports. 'Breakfast and lunch, as well as healthy snacks throughout the day. Any of those field trips that they want to go on. Sports and athletic programing. Any access to additional resources that kids need in order to have good mental and physical and emotional health and well-being. Academic support. Because we don't want any of our youth to suffer learning loss while school is out for the summer. So it's all of the things,' said Catherine Centre. If you would like to register you would need to call the Boys and Girls club as they do have a wait list. Today's check presentation is from 1-2pm at the Oasis VIP Great Futures Academy on Deans Bridge 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Richmond County's 2025 graduating class earns more than $41 million in scholarships

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Graduating seniors of the Richmond County School System earned more than $41.6 million in scholarships this year, according to an announcement released Friday. RCSS said June 6 that nearly 1,800 students graduated in the county May 28-30, with several receiving scholarship offers. 'This achievement reflects the commitment our students have made to their futures and the incredible guidance they've received from those around them,' said Shawnda Stovall, president of the Richmond County Board of Education. 'We're proud to celebrate the Class of 2025 and deeply grateful to the families, educators, and school staff who supported them every step of the way.' According to the school system, the $41.6 million in scholarships reflects a wide range of postsecondary pathways, from four-year universities and technical colleges to military service and specialized career training programs. 'This incredible accomplishment speaks to the dedication of our students and the strong support systems in our schools,' said Dr. Malinda Cobb, interim superintendent of schools. 'We are especially proud of our school counselors, teachers, and graduation coaches who work alongside families to help students explore their strengths and plan their futures.' Col. Co. leaders start plans for new data center and technology park in Appling

APPLING, Ga. (WJBF) – With a rise in cyber technology, Columbia County leaders are starting to work on plans to bring a data center to Appling. After recent discussions about ways to improve the county, Economic Development Authority Director Cheney Eldridge says they saw the need for a data center. 'Anything you do on the internet runs through a data center, so they're very important to have—not just for the country, but here in this community,' said Eldridge. County leaders have sent a rezoning application for almost 2000 acres near Morris Callaway Road. They're working with Trammel Crow, a commercial real estate firm out of Atlanta. 'They came to us when we were looking at this piece of property, and have really been with us the whole time working together through a public-private partnership. They're simply an intermediary between us and whoever would come in and locate within this park,' said Eldridge. She says they strategically picked that location, as nearby White Oak Business Park hosts operations for Club Car and Amazon's fulfillment center. 'I think it's important to keep all of these together, because the last thing we want is a splattered amount of projects all over. Industrial, a data center, or even an office park. You want to keep things together just like you want residential together,' Eldridge said. They are not planning on the data center to be an extension of White Oak Business Park, but workers will use that area to access the building. 'Access will come through the business park, and they'll access the property that way,' the director added. 'They'll come off of the highway as opposed to coming off of Morris Callaway.' The idea is to hire network engineers to operate at the center—what the authority hopes is a golden opportunity to create more jobs for those coming from Augusta University and Fort Eisenhower. 'Right now, a lot of the folks that are coming out of Fort Eisenhower are not able to find the right job that meets their skills. What we will have with this data center park is plenty of jobs that are exactly what we have coming out of Fort Eisenhower, and through the pipeline that we're building,' Eldridge said. The county is still working on costs and timelines with Trammel Crow. But with more jobs and generated tax revenue expected, they see it as a win-win. 'Any time you go on Facebook to look at pictures of your grandchildren, or you want to send a photo of your dog to a friend—you need a data center. It's integral for this country to have this type of infrastructure in place. I see it as an opportunity for this community to benefit from a necessary infrastructure that's going to have to go in any way,' said Eldridge. The county is now waiting on next steps with the developer. The construction timeline will take place over the next several years. 'I think you might see things start in the next few years. But for this size of a piece of property, for it to be fully built out will probably take 20 to 30 years,' Eldridge said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
