'Right time' for Spurs' Donley to make NI switch

BBC News22-03-2025

After a lifetime of "pestering" from his father, Jamie Donley said it was a "really proud moment" for him and his family to make his Northern Ireland debut in the 1-1 draw with Switzerland on Friday night.Or half of his family at any rate. The Tottenham Hotspur forward joked that his mother was "not happy" with his decision to play for the country of his birth at international level after previously representing England youth sides. The 20-year-old who is on loan at Leyton Orient spent the first few years of his life in Antrim, Northern Ireland before the family moved to Colchester.Growing up he played for both Northern Ireland and England's underage sides before appearing to throw his lot in with the latter at under-19s level.A concerted effort from his Northern Irish father and the side's manager Michael O'Neill, however, convinced him that his future was in a green jersey and confirmation of his international transfer arrived this week from Fifa."My dad's been pestering me my whole life to play for Northern Ireland," Donley said."I think it's the right time in my career to make the change and I'm delighted I've done it."Michael has been unbelievable the way he's sorted it out. He gave me my space to make my decision. I've made it now and hopefully it's the right one."
Donley came on in the 58th minute of the friendly against the Swiss, followed on to the pitch later by another debutant Terry Devlin. For the the final 15 minutes of the game, Northern Ireland's four midfielders and two attackers were all 21 years old or younger and Donley said the age profile of the squad appealed to him."How young and promising the group is," he said when asked what was the key factor in his decision."I'm a young player as well and that helps me to fit in."It was almost the dream debut for Donley when he met Justin Devenny's corner at the near post but his deft header drew a diving save from Gregor Kobel in the Switzerland goal. While denied on this occasion, he knows it is hoped he can provide another creative spark for the side."That's my job as an attacking player," he added."Michael said they've lacked that a little bit, a goalscorer, someone who can create and score goals. "Hopefully he can put his trust in me to do that for the team."
'My aim obviously is to be a Tottenham player'
Donley has already made four appearances for the Spurs first team, all of which came during the 2023-24 campaign. He has scored six times for Leyton Orient during his loan spell and came to wider attention in an FA Cup fourth-round tie against Manchester City when he struck a 50-yard lob over Stefan Ortega that hit the crossbar and then the goalkeeper for a spectacular own goal. Before returning to his parent club for pre-season training in the summer, he said he hopes to catch the eye at international level too."I've been able to show the Orient fans what I'm capable of. I think coming to play here [for Northern Ireland] will help my career and put my career to the next level."My aim obviously is to be a Tottenham player. That's what I want to do and that's what I want to be."Hopefully I can strive to do that. When I come back in pre-season hopefully I can show what I've been doing for Leyton Orient in training and in games."Next up is Northern Ireland's trip to Sweden for another friendly on Tuesday where he could come up against his Tottenham Hotspur team-mate Lucas Bergvall. The 19-year-old midfielder has been a key player for manager Ange Postecoglou this season, featuring 38 times to date during his first campaign in English football."He's been unbelievable this season for Spurs. I still watch all the games and it'll be good to see him," Donley added."Hopefully we can beat them."

Jonny Evans makes surprise announcement on future after Man Utd release him

Jonny Evans has been released by Manchester United and the defender remains uncertain about what could come next in his career when he leaves the Red Devils this month Jonny Evans is in no rush to make a decision on his future after it was confirmed he would be released by Manchester United. The defender is set to see his contract expire at the end of the month with no renewal forthcoming. But despite the 37-year-old being firmly in the twilight of his career, no official announcement on a retirement has arrived, though he is expected to do so. The Northern Irish defender is set to reflect on his situation before making a decision over his next steps. ‌ Evans is set to end his second spell at Old Trafford having returned to the club in 2023 to take on a senior role in the dressing room and to provide additional depth in United's backline. The veteran probably played more than anticipated making 30 appearances in his first season back to see his contract extended by a further year. ‌ Evans was called upon less frequently last term in a difficult season and joins the likes of Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof in exiting the club. Tom Heaton remains in discussions over potentially extending his stay. It had been suggested Evans' departure could mark the end of his career, after Evans noted 'It was stay here or retire' last summer. The defender is yet to make plans however. "I'm not sure yet," Evans told BBC Sport NI when asked about his future . "I'll take a bit of time. I don't feel like I'm in a rush to do anything." In his eight years away from Manchester, Evans spent three years at West Bromwich Albion and five years at Leicester. The central defender added an FA Cup victory in 2021 to three Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup and two League Cup success across his two stints with the Red Devils. Evans earned 107 caps for Northern Ireland and provided some analysis on where the nation stands during his appearance on BBC. The ex-Sunderland loanee is hopeful his former boss, Michael O'Neill can lead the country to World Cup qualification. ‌ "When you've got Michael O'Neill in charge, he gives everyone a little bit of hope," said Evans, "He's taken the team to a major tournament before and if you want anyone in charge, it's him. "When I look at this team it reminds me of ourselves. He's playing five at the back and he has Isaac Price, he's on a good run of form. "You look throughout the team, you see Dan Ballard and Trai Hume getting promoted, they'll be playing Premier League football and that'll only be good for the team. I'm excited. Over the next couple of years I think we'll see them progress together." Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football. Mexico City mayor pledges warm welcome for all 2026 World Cup fans

MEXICO CITY, June 11 (Reuters) - Mexico City will embrace fans from all nations and cultures during the 2026 World Cup, Mayor Clara Brugada said on Wednesday as she unveiled the countdown clock marking one year to the tournament's return to the Mexican capital. As the city prepares to host the World Cup for the third time, Brugada stressed the importance of inclusion and openness, framing a contrast to anti-immigration measures in co-host nation the United States under President Donald Trump "All football fans are welcome here. In this city, no one is a foreigner," Brugada said at the FIFA event. "We will joyfully welcome those who come from all corners of the globe, with their music, their colours, their languages and their passion. We think diversity is our greatest treasure." "Today is a very special day for Mexico City. We are exactly 365 days away from opening our doors to the world and hosting, for the third time, the opening of a World Cup, something that no other city on the planet has ever achieved." Addressing concerns from residents near the Azteca Stadium, Mayor Brugada assured them that they would benefit from over six billion pesos in investments aimed at upgrading public services and infrastructure. "We will strengthen the rights of residents with more water, better public spaces and more services," she said. "We are therefore building a legacy, and that is something that fills us with pride. That is why we have made a historic investment in works, infrastructure, water, security and mobility." In addition, as part of the festivities leading up to the 2026 World Cup, more than 40 buildings and landmarks in Mexico City will be illuminated in green on Wednesday night.

Fifa warned about free speech restrictions at 2026 World Cup

The warnings follow recent US government policies under President Donald Trump, which include a travel ban affecting 12 countries, such as World Cup qualifier Iran, and heightened criticism over responses to civil unrest. The United States will co-host the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico, with California's Rose Bowl also set to host matches during the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, which starts on Saturday. Ronan Evain, executive director of Football Supporters Europe, said: "Fans travel to the World Cup to celebrate and express their passion and any attempt to curtail our fundamental rights, including the right to free speech, is a betrayal of the spirit of football. "We're particularly concerned about the potential for selective enforcement and discrimination against fans based on our perceived political views or national origin. "FIFA must obtain the necessary guarantees to ensure fans from all over the world are able to safely travel and attend the games." Human rights organisations have voiced concerns about increasing restrictions on freedom of expression, particularly regarding pro-Palestinian protests. Minky Worden, director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch, said: "FIFA should publicly acknowledge the threat US immigration and other anti-human rights policies pose to the tournament's integrity and use its leverage with the US government to ensure that the rights of all qualified teams, support staff, media and fans are respected as they seek to enter the United States, regardless of nationality, gender identity, religion or opinion." The US government has stated that the travel ban will not apply to players or team staff from qualified nations. However, it will prevent fans from Iran and other affected countries from attending matches in person. FIFA and the US State Department have been contacted for comment.
