Tragedy at Welland motorcycle track: 29-year-old rider killed in Open Expert feature
Motorcycle racing at Welland County Speedway has been postponed indefinitely following the death of a Canadian championship-calibre rider in Saturday night's premier race.
Two laps were remaining in the four-lap 450 Expert feature when Tyler Seguin got 'tangled up' with other racers in the field of eight.
'Tyler was in fifth place, he took the inside and they got tangled up,' said Jack Wilson, president of Welland County Motorcycle Club, which owns and operates the quarter-mile clay track on Netherby Road.
Seguin, 29, of Welland died at the scene.
Tyler Seguin, right, is interviewed after winning the Flat Track Canada championship in 2023. One of the top motorcycle racers at Welland County Speedway, Seguin was killed in a crash in Saturday night's final race. He was 29.
The owner of a construction business, Seguin is the first fatality at the track since Bob Harpwood was killed at 20 in 1979.
Wilson said one other rider suffered minor injuries in Saturday's 450 Expert final.
'He's fine,' Wilson said. 'He fell, bumped his head, but he's OK.'
Wilson told The Standard there is no one to blame for the tragedy.
'I've been out here all night with police investigators, everything. There's no fault, no blame, it's simply a racing accident,' he said.
'One guy is holding his line, the other guy goes underneath. Tyler was on the inside, he got a little loose, it's as simple as that. He high-sided the bike and went into the barrier.'
In 2023, Seguin, whose No. 22 was a fixture at Welland County Speedway over the years, won the Flat Track Canada championship, taking the title in the final race of the season at Humberstone.
'He was one of our top racers,' Wilson said.
In a Facebook post, a user by the name of MyRanda SwayZe called Seguin's death 'such a huge loss for the entire community.'
'Watching you grow up from a little kid to a grown man, you made a lot of people proud. And you definitely made a name for yourself, everyone knew you one way or another.'
Jacob Campbell wrote in his post that he watched 'from the shadows for years of what you (Seguin) became.'
'A beautiful human with a business, family and purpose.'
As of Sunday, all track operations have been cancelled by the club.
'We would normally be running motocross today, but that's cancelled,' Wilson said. 'Our next race, next week, is cancelled.
'Beyond that, I have no comment.'

Real Betis & Switzerland Star Reveals ‘Inzaghi Wanted Me At Inter Milan Last Summer'
Real Betis & Switzerland Star Reveals 'Inzaghi Wanted Me At Inter Milan Last Summer' Real Betis defender Ricardo Rodriguez says that Simone Inzaghi wanted to sign him at Inter Milan last summer. The Swiss international spoke to Italian outlet He revealed the background of the Nerazzurri's reported interest last summer. Advertisement Ricardo Rodriguez joined Real Betis last summer. He arrived at the Spanish club on a free transfer after his contract with Torino had expired. There had been some other transfer links as well, however. There were even reports that Inter had wanted to sign Rodriguez. This came after the Nerazzurri had lost Tajon Buchanan to a serious injury. With the Canadian unavailable to provide cover on the left flank, Inter had the idea to move Carlos Augusto to that position exclusively. Therefore, Inter were searching for a player capable of playing on the left of the back three. Reports named Rodriguez as a target in that respect. Meanwhile, Inter were also reportedly close to signing Juan Cabal before he went to Juventus. Advertisement However, in the end, it was Tomas Palacios who arrived. (Photo by) At the heart of this whole transfer tug-of-war was the question of whether to sign a younger or more experienced player. Inter owners Oaktree Capital have made little secret of the fact that they want to focus on younger defenders. Meanwhile, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi was reportedly hoping for a reliable veteran as a short-term option. And Ricardo Rodriguez would have certainly been more in line with the latter idea. 'Inter had wanted to sign me because Inzaghi wanted an experienced profile,' he explained. 'But Real Betis were strongly interested in me,' he then noted.

Swimming-Canadian teen McIntosh shatters 400 metres freestyle record
(Reuters) -Canadian three-times Olympic champion Summer McIntosh set a world record in the women's 400 metres freestyle at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Victoria, British Columbia, on Saturday. The 18-year-old clocked 3:54.18 to better Australian Ariarne Titmus' mark of 3:55.38 set at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. "Going into tonight, I knew that my training has been really good these past few months, and I knew that I could do something special," McIntosh told public broadcaster CBC. "So being able to input my training in doing that - I didn't think my training would be 54.1 but I'm really happy with that." At the Paris Olympics, McIntosh became the first athlete from Canada to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games. In Paris, the four-times World Aquatics champion won gold in the 400 metres individual medley, 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley, as well as taking silver in the 400 freestyle. But things felt different at the Canada trials. "I just felt so strong throughout, and that's never been the case in the 400 freestyle for me. That last 100, I'm always really, really hurting. "But I flipped at the 200 and I was just cruising, so I knew that I was having a strong swim. I could tell by the crowd and knew the way they were cheering that I was probably close to the world record. "So I really tried to push that last part for them."
