Trump compliments Merz on the chancellor's English language skills
US President Donald Trump on Thursday complimented German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the German leader's English language abilities.
Part way during the press conference in the Oval Office on the occasion of Merz's inaugural visit to the White House, the German chancellor switched from English to German to address the German press corps in attendance.
After that Trump, who has German origins, said he was impressed with Merz's German language abilities.
"You speak such good English. Is it as good as your German would you say?
That provoked some laughs from both Merz and the reporters in the room.
Merz acknowledged that English is not his mother tongue "but I try to understand almost everything" and said he makes an effort "to speak as good as I can."

Our favorite photos from Bitcoin 2025
From May 27 to 29, some 35,000 people gathered at the Venetian Expo Center in Las Vegas for Bitcoin 2025, the world's largest annual gathering of bitcoin industry professionals and enthusiasts. As Jacob Silverman reports in a feature dispatch from the conference for Business Insider, "More than anything, Bitcoin 2025 was a victory celebration for an industry that pushed all its chips in behind Donald Trump and the Republican Party during the 2024 election cycle and won handsomely." This year's speakers included Vice President JD Vance, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., White House crypto and AI czar David Sacks, Sen. Jim Justice (who shared the stage with his bulldog, Babydog), Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, and the recently pardoned Silk Road drug market founder Ross Ulbricht. BI also sent photographer David Becker to cover the conference, and his photos captured the energy and triumphalism of the sprawling bitcoin community today.

Court Rules Trump Can Exclude Journalists From Oval Office
A federal appeals court has ruled that President Donald Trump can exclude journalists from the Oval Office, Air Force One and other 'restricted' spaces based on their editorial decisions, handing the administration a win in its fight with the Associated Press over access. In a 2-1 order on Friday, the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit halted a lower-court judge's order that had restored the wire service's ability to participate in a rotating pool of reporters who cover the president's daily movements.

Trump can bar Associated Press from some events, appeals court rules
The Trump administration can bar the Associated Press from some official events for now, a federal appeals court ruled on Friday. The administration in February barred the news outlet's staff from the press pool that covers the president after the AP said it would continue using the name 'Gulf of Mexico' despite an executive order signed by President Donald Trump shortly after his inauguration that sought to rename the oceanic basin 'Gulf of America.'
