Youngstown City Schools agree to comply with bathroom law
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — This week, Ohio's Senate Bill 104 will take effect, banning students from using restrooms that don't align with their assigned sex at birth.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost threatened possible legal action against districts that didn't comply with the new law.
Here at home, Youngstown City Schools sent a statement saying they will comply with the law.
'The Youngstown City School District is dedicated to creating an educational environment where all scholars are valued. We will adhere to the law while fostering a school community of opportunity and success,' the statement said.
The bill officially goes into effect Tuesday.

DOD allocates $25M for new fire station at YARS
VIENNA, Ohio (WKBN) – A Department of Defense funding plan shows that $25 million is being set aside for a new fire station at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna Township. The plan shows that money is being appropriated for FY 2025. It's part of the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act 2025, which was signed by President Donald Trump on March 15. Congressman Dave Joyce, 14th District, who is also a member of the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, joined other Valley lawmakers in a letter to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reiterating the importance of the funding for the fire station, specifically stating its importance as the facility transitions to the new C-130J. Congressman Michael Rulli, 6th District, said that the investment is significant and shows the importance of the air station. 'It ensures that Northeast Ohio remains not just relevant, but indispensable to our national security,' Rulli said. Last year, an $11 million project got started for a new front gate and visitor center at the air station. That project is being overseen by the Army Corps of Engineers. Debate continues over whether or not to move board of elections out of Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – There are still no decisions on moving Mahoning County departments from one facility to another but that hasn't stopped people from lobbying county commissioners. For months, there's been a debate over whether or not to move the board of elections out of Oak Hill Renaissance Place and into the Patriot Building in Austintown. Opponents argue it would lead to fewer inner-city residents coming out to vote. Still, Elections Board Chairman Dave Betras insists the office and its voting equipment need to find a new home. 'All of us — the two Republicans and the two Democrats — that took an oath to preserve, and protect, and defend those votes and those voting machines, we are violative of that because that building is not working,' he said. 'The fact that this move has been proposed and being pushed by the board of elections without any public hearings or input from the residents of the county that it would affect the most is totally unfair,' said Pastor Ken Simon, with the Community Mobilization Coalition. Valley congressman demands congressional investigation
EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (WKBN) — Valley Congressman Michael Rulli is hoping his colleagues in Washington will do more to look into the federal response to the East Palestine train derailment two-and-a-half years ago. Recently, a federal watchdog group discovered what it claims are emails and other messages among leaders within the Biden Administration to withhold information about the potential for cancer clusters developing in the East Palestine area because of chemical contamination from the train wreck. Rulli says he wants to know what administrators know and when they knew it. 'I think an investigation needs to be opened today,' Rulli said. 'What we discovered with the Biden administration and the way the FEMA Program handled this is unacceptable in any civilized society.' The congressman is calling the federal response a cover-up.
