5 Things We Learned From ‘Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie' Docuseries

Yahoo4 days ago

When Redding, California resident Keith Papini called first responders on Nov. 2, 2016, he feared the absolute worst.
He had returned home from his job to find his two children alone in the house, and his wife Sherri Papini nowhere to be seen. After using the Find My app to track her location, Keith found Sherri's phone lying in the dirt on the side of the road, headphones coiled around several strands of her hair. Local law enforcement brought in the FBI, and the search turned into a national media frenzy. Sherri was found 22 days later, starving, bruised, branded, and claiming to police she was abducted and held captive by two masked Hispanic women. But after a six-year investigation, officials had an alternative hypothesis, eventually accusing Sherri of manufacturing the kidnapping to run away with her former boyfriend, James Reyes.

The claims skyrocketed the attention, painting Sherri as a real-life Gone Girl. She was convicted for mail fraud and making false statements to the FBI and sentenced to 18 months in federal prison. After leaving prison, Sherri remained out of the public eye, refusing to comment even as her story was turned into a Lifetime original movie (Hoax: The Kidnapping of Sherri Papini) and the Hulu documentary Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini. But now, Sherri is speaking publicly for the first time since her disappearance about what she says really happened nine years ago. In the new docuseries Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie, out May 26 and May 27 on ID and Max, Sherri tells her firsthand account of her experience — including the revelation that she did lie about her whereabouts, but was actually held against her will.
'The story that the world thinks they know is that I am a master manipulator who has fooled everyone,' Sherri says in the opening moments of the docuseries. 'The Sherri Papini that's out there, it's not me. She's not real. I've gone from teenage sex worker to criminal mastermind to master manipulator. I poisoned my children. [I'm a] liar, cheater, whore. . . . I'm so f—ing tired of keeping the secret and living the lie. Now I get to tell the truth.'
Here's five things we learned from Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie.
According to Papini, she and her now ex-husband Keith had an incredibly toxic marriage. She claims he was often emotionally abusive, and controlled her finances, friendships, and even when she was allowed to speak in the home (Keith denied all of these allegations through an attorney statement in the docuseries.)
Because of this tension, Sherri claims she started an emotional affair with a former boyfriend James Reyes. The two spoke often on burner phones, but never met up, she says. According to Sherri, when she went for a run that Nov. afternoon, Reyes pulled up and abducted her.
'I remember waking up briefly in the back of the vehicle and not being able to even keep my eyes open,' Sherri says. 'And then the next time I woke up was when he was getting me out of the vehicle to go inside, and it was dark. He had one hand underneath my arm trying to help me walk. And I just remember thinking, 'This is not where I'm supposed to be. I'm supposed to be picking my kids up from day care. I am not supposed to be here.''
Police interviewed Reyes during their investigation, who claimed that he picked up Sherri with consent and allowed her to stay at his house — where she planned her injuries and often refused to eat. (Reyes did not participate in the documentary, declined to comment to filmmakers, and has not been charged with any crimes.) But Sherri claims she was held against her will.
Sherri's ex-husband Keith and several members of her family participated in Hulu's 2024 docuseries Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini. The series also included testimony from the case's lead investigators and FBI officials. But according to Denise Farmer, the FBI's lead investigator on Sherri's case, ID's docuseries is the first time investigators have been able to freely speak about the case.
During previous interviews, they had public relations officers in the room to make sure they didn't spill any sensitive techniques or confidential case files. This one is different because no FBI minders were present during any law enforcement interviews — allowing Farmer to speak in more detail to the ID team about the investigation and when they first began to suspect Sherri of lying.
'Our work speaks for itself, but we don't speak about our work. We're silent professionals. We don't wanna just tell the whole world how we investigate these cases,' Farmer says in the docuseries. 'That's just not something we're gonna publish. This time is different, because I'm retired now.'
Sherri was found on Thanksgiving day by a motorist near Interstate 5, 22 days after she disappeared. When police questioned her at the hospital, she claimed that she was abducted by two Hispanic women who kept their faces hidden behind masks. She kept this claim up throughout the investigation, even self-publishing a book about her time in captivity called 22 Days. In the book, she nicknamed the two women Smegma and Taint, and described several instances of being injured, beaten, and starved.
Officials said she lied to keep the kidnapping hoax going, something that eventually led to her and Keith's divorce. 'To go back and watch the footage to see all the people that were affected, and knowing that she's lying — not just lying; she's watching videos of everyone search for her. All the signs, and knowing that her children are at home, and being OK with that? It's painful, and it definitely separates into, this isn't just a lie,' he told Rolling Stone in 2024. This was planned. So it's very painful, and it really shows the level of manipulation and deceit that she put upon us.'
But in the docuseries, Sherri claims she lied when she was found because she was afraid of Reyes and that her husband would find out about her emotional affair with him. Sherri had signed a postnuptial agreement, which gave Keith a large portion of their funds if she ever cheated on him.
'The truth is,' she says in the series, 'I was concealing an affair from my husband, threatening to take everything from me if he found out that I was having any involvement [with another man].'
Much of the trouble with Sherri's case is her shifting story about what happened to her. During the investigation, Police could not find any record of the two women she claimed had kidnapped her. After speaking to Reyes, they found several people who corroborated the fact that Sherri was in his home. The investigation also confirmed that she and Reyes were in communication prior to her disappearance.
Sherri confirms in the docuseries that she was speaking with Reyes, and even might have mentioned in passing a plan to meet up, but never consented to leaving. Her psychologist, Dr. Stephen Diggs, claims in the series that Sherri has self-defeating personality disorder, which makes her susceptible to pleasing behavior. Diggs says this could explain why Sherri kept communicating with Reyes and might have even agreed to meet up with him over the phone. In the docuseries, Sherri even tries to recreate her abduction, but says the exercise doesn't jog any memories.
'I was abducted,' she says. 'I don't remember if I got into the car.'
Sherri maintains that while she lied about many things, she is not lying about her interactions with Reyes. For the docuseries, Sherri passed a polygraph saying that she did not ask him to brand her.
'The injuries that occurred, the bites on my thigh, the footprint on my back, the brand, the melting of my skin,' she says. 'I am telling you there was no consent.'

Someone is impersonating Trump's Chief of Staff and even reaching out to governors in elaborate plot

The FBI and the Trump administration have launched a joint investigation into how an impersonator hacked White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles' phone. An unknown person pretending to be Wiles has called or texted Republican senators and governors, and 'prominent' business executives over the last few weeks, sources told The Wall Street Journal. It's not clear what the impersonator's goal is. The caller reportedly sounds like Wiles, and officials believe the impersonator may have used artificial intelligence to imitate Wiles's voice, sources told the Journal. Sources told the newspaper that investigators do not believe that foreign actors are to blame for the hacking. One lawmaker told the Journal that a text supposedly from Wiles asked them to compile a list of people for Trump to pardon. Some of the texts appeared straightforward and legitimate, while others were odd, the targets said. Some of the language reportedly didn't sound like Wiles, and the impersonator sometimes asked questions Wiles should have known. In one particularly suspicious request, the impersonator asked a target to transfer cash, according to the Journal. The calls and texts did not come from Wiles' phone. Wiles – one of President Donald Trump's closest advisers, who ran his campaign – reportedly recently told associates that her personal phone had been hacked, which may have been how her impersonator discovered her contacts and their contact information. A source told The Journal, ' Some White House advisers have privately joked about how busy the impersonator seems to be.' Her email was also reportedly hacked last August, reportedly by Iranian agents. 'The White House takes the cybersecurity of all staff very seriously, and this matter continues to be investigated,' a White House spokeswoman told the newspaper. Wiles' appointment to such a prominent position drew criticism thanks to her previous career as a lobbyist. Fellow lobbyist Craig Holman told the Associated Press back in November that her appointment 'bodes very poorly for what we are about to see from the next Trump administration.' 'This time around, Trump didn't even mention 'draining the swamp.' ... He's not even pretending.' Wiles' selection as chief of staff was Trump's first announced hire after his win. Wiles co-led the former president's campaign and was widely credited with having run an operation that was far more disciplined than his two previous efforts. Even so, she will have her work cut out for her. Though the job has traditionally entailed policing who has access to the president, Trump chafed at such efforts during his first presidency as he churned through four chiefs of staff. During his recent victory speech, Trump called Wiles and 'Ice Maiden' while praising her as a consummate behind-the-scenes player. She is the first woman to hold the position. The Associated Press contributed to his report.

Nothing wrong with that, except he eats so fast, he often gets ill afterwards. This product worked much better than expected. It took our dog so long to eat (and yet stayed engaged) he laid down. He went from 1-2 minutes to almost 20+ minutes. He hasn't had any further incidents and seems to actually enjoy the challenge! It's helped my face to clear up very quickly removing all of the blemish spots and dark spots around my face. It's been one of the best products I've added to my face routine. Rapid Brands is a California-based small business that specializes in dishwasher-safe, microwaveable BPA-free kitchen review: "There is nothing I dislike about this. I don't like milk so didn't add it but it's surprisingly as good or better than stove top. The texture and flavor is on point and it's not soggy like easymac. I laughed when I got this and was like wow it's no different than any container. It's harder material so idk what it's made of but the directions inside the container are on point for good mac and cheese except I drained the water. The days of scrubbing a big pot are over for me. I can't believe this actually worked. Especially bc the texture of the noodles and the taste is so on point. I got no discount and wasn't paid for this review. I just really am shocked it worked and worked so well. They got this down to a science with this container and directions. I am amazed." — me $11.99 at Amazon Promising review: "So soft. Easy decision to buy more. I saw a recommendation for these from TikTok and went for it. King size sheets aren't cheap, especially if you want quality. This was well worth the price. Would love to see marvel designs and kid options!" — user08112116Promising review: "I read from other reviews these sheets were soft so I wasn't too surprised when I received them and man are they soft and so comfortable. We have Egyptian cotton sheets that were expensive and I promise we have changed them back out for the comfort of these sheets. The cotton sheets were cold and these were just right. The other thing is my husband has thin skin that any nick he will bleed. Well he has bled on these white sheets and when we washed them (in cold water as instructed) the blood always comes out and never stains. I can't say enough great things about them except to say all three of my adult kids are receiving a set as part of their Christmas!" — Sheree Chrestman $34.97 at Amazon Amazon Caffeine has a number of skincare benefits, including brightening and temporarily reducing the appearance of stretch marks and cellulite, if that's something you're looking to do! I have been using this for maybe three days now, and putting it on in the morning and evening are the best parts of my day. The description of the scent as "pistachio, salted caramel, and vanilla" does not even begin to describe the incredibly decadent smell of this cream on my skin. My skin feels like velvet and I saw improvements in the texture after the first application. I will use it for the rest of my life. Do not ever discontinue this! I did not expect to be so amazed my this cream, but it is life-changing. Buy it! I use an electric toothbrush usually, but I feel like I'm getting a much more satisfying clean from these, especially because I tend to get yellow stains between my teeth no matter how much I floss and these bristles seem to actually target that a lot more effectively. I've switched to using this in the morning and the electric one at night and definitely see a difference in that area in particular."Promising review: "I will always buy this toothbrush. Can't say enough about it. I feel like I flossed after using it. I HIGHLY recommend this toothbrush" — Elli JaceyPromising review: "This was another one of my TikTok purchases! I was skeptical but my kids hate flossing their teeth so thought this might help in between making them floss. They work amazing! My kids said they could see and feel a different on the first use and I agree! They are definitely with a try! I would suggest not pushing too hard, those tiny bristles really get in there and if you push too hard you nights be sore like I was. It felt like after going to a dental cleaning." — Amy N. $9.90 at Amazon Amazon Promising review: "Never used pasties before but I did just recently get a boob job, so I needed some. I saw a few Tiktoks on these and decided to get them. Wow. Can't see the weird ring like most pasties. No nip visible at all. Can't even tell i'm wearing them. Skims dress, zara dress, thin tops, these work with all!" — ashley mPromising review: "SO. GOOD. I didn't get my hopes up much for these as I just couldn't imagine sticky silicone staying in place for a whole day. THEY DO. They're amazing. I've had them for a few months now — worn at least 5 times and only rinsed them once to regain stickiness and that's because I accidentally dropped them and they got cat hair stuck on the adhesive. Definitely got my money's worth out of them already and I feel as though they're going to last a good while! They're not noticeable but you feel protected. Normal crop tops that I'd comfortably go braless with are now even better with these since it gives just the slightest lift or SOMETHING. Idk what it is but the [boobs} look good." — maggie moon $26.50 at Amazon Check out a TikTok of the snack spinner in review: "My kids love these snack organizers and it's a great way to offer several choices at once. They're also perfect for traveling because they're easy to take and very compact. They are also fun and engaging when children have to push the spinner to get a new box to open. I would definitely buy these again. I even send them in my kids lunch boxes! They are super fun and very durable. We most recently took them on vacation with us and use them the whole week. There are perfect for the plane and car rides especially." — Brittany Tremblay $29.95 at Amazon Amazon Check out a TikTok of the cup washer in action. It includes instructions to easily hook it up to your hot water line. Just note that it won't install on sinks without a flat edge! Promising review: "This installed easier than removing the existing soap dispenser, which was always a nightmare. This has the same type of jetted sprayer that you would use to jet out a drain line, so yeah it'll spray the stink off of a turd. It cleans baby bottles, Contigo, yeti, spaghetti sauce, baby food, mason jars with a couple of presses. Highly recommended over the messy soap dispenser!" — Chuq $19.99 at Amazon And hey (as long as you're not putting the fork itself in your mouth), since you're keeping it in the fridge, you don't need to wash it every time. Check out a TikTok of the condiment fork in action. Promising review: "Great kitchen item. Forks are great to get pickles out of the jar, but if you have kids/lazy people (lol) you know that dirty hands are going into that jar. This has really prevented that from happening. It comes with two different rings to fit whatever size jar, a stabber holder, and a stabbing stick." — Amazon customer $8.99 at Amazon Amazon Check out a TikTok of the cloud knife in action. Promising review: "I love these — sturdy, sharp with retractable blade. I keep them in different rooms for opening packages or breaking down boxes to recycle. Would recommend and buy again." — Amy Yasneski $7.40 at Amazon Promising review: "Honestly saw this on TikTok and contemplated getting it for a long time. I'm so glad I committed! It's tight and holds everything together really well. It's extremely comfortable. The padding is amazing so you don't have to worry about a bra underneath at all. You can wear it with sweats or leggings to the gym or even dress it up for a night out. Considering more colors for sure!" — Kristyn LongPromising review: "This cami is SOOO high quality, it feels exactly like if not even BETTER quality than similar lulu lemon yoga camis. The length is perfect, not too short not too long. After reading reviews I decided to size up and get a large because some people said if you get it too small the straps might cut into you and it'd be too short. I agree with that! They're so soft I'm just shocked at the quality, such cute colors! I got white and a light green. absolutely obsessed with these and will be ordering more!" — Rosa Rodriquez $15.99+ at Amazon Check it out on TikTok here!Promising review: "You NEED this. This product is AMAZING. When I run errands, I hate bringing both a water bottle and coffee tumbler. This product solves that issue. I ran it through my dishwasher to clean it, and the plastic didn't morph at all. 10/10 recommend!" — Megan Huffman $14.99 at Amazon Check out a TikTok of the DogBuddy scooper in action. Promising review: "I normally don't leave reviews but this is amazing! It's easy to use and saves so many dog bags if you're taking several dogs on a walk because you don't need to open a new bag for each poop. It also makes the whole process a lot less gross.I would 100% recommend this for dog walks and even picking up poop in the holds a lot more than you'd think!" — Joslyn Cavitt $14.99 at Amazon Promising review: "TikTok made me do it and I'm so glad I did. My daughter and I make cold brew each morning and used to fight over the ice cubes, not anymore! She has her container and I have mine. No more freezer smell and best of all no trying to twist a hard plastic container to get every single ice cube out of a tray. If I could give you a gazillion stars, I would, thank you." — tthomas1031Promising review: "We have a small freezer and no icemaker, and have been using fiddly trays for years. Icebreaker Pop has changed everything! No more leaky ice trays spilling in the freezer, (or on the way to the freezer), and no ice picking up weird smells and tastes from the freezer. Icebreaker Pop is self-contained and easy to use. You fill it up with water –but be careful not to overfill, because it does expand as it freezes. (Physics!) Seal the top and put it in the freezer. Once it's frozen, you lay it on a flat surface, press down hard on it a couple of times on each side to crack the ice, and pull apart with both handles. You now have 18 cubes of clean ice that dispense from the opening, eliminating the need to touch the cubes as you add them to your glass. The cubes are a little smaller than from regular ice trays, but that's okay with us. Icebreaker Pop is also cool-looking and easy to clean; it's made up of three easy-to-separate pieces that are a snap to wash thoroughly. Very happy with this product!" — Leah Koepp $17.99 at Amazon Amazon Check them out on TikTok. And that's not all. You may have seen this brand's other pasta-shaped tools on TikTok, like the spaghetti serving fork, mezzelune oven mitts, conchiglie lemon squeezer, ravioli spoon rest and rotelle trivet and review: "I find these hilarious, and easily the best kitchen gadget I've spent my money on! They're super handy for getting stuff out of the oven, and I feel less likely to drop a dish than when I use traditional hot pads/oven mitts with the padding. Very grippy, thick enough that heat doesn't transfer through, and again, hilarious." — Hannah B $15.90 at Amazon Amazon It's battery-powered btw!Promising review: "Hands-down the best classroom management tool I have ever purchased. It's definitely overpriced but for the amount of times I've used it in one day, so worth it." — Emily MetzgerPromising review: "As a middle school, teacher, specifically a band teacher, I have to say that this is so funny to use in class. I use it almost daily and my kids think it's hilarious." — brittany mcfall $7.95 at Amazon Promising review: "I saw these wineglasses on TikTok and had to order them. They are perfect! Will be purchasing again as gifts for my friends!" — dianaPromising review: "I gifted this to a friend for Christmas who was so excited and overjoyed when she opened it that she dropped them twice on a marble countertop! No break, no splinter and no chip! I wanted to keep them for myself but will definitely order again. Absolutely beautiful and super sturdy." — Amazon customer $18.95 at Amazon Promising review: "Saw these on a TikTok video and took a chance. I ordered three for different family members and boy am I glad I did! This product is fantastic! It does exactly what it says it will do. The brush is phenomenal in cleaning out the little grates on the speakers of my phone and AirPods. There is a picker that you can use to get big chunky ear wax out of your ear pieces and the long skinny wand thing reaches down into my charging case and gets all the junk out of there. This is a win-win-win!" — JMilwaukee $7.99 at Amazon Watch this parent share why this sleep trainer is one of their "best parenting hacks" in this TikTok. Promising review: "My 2-year-old started getting up at 6:30 instead of 7:30 and was ready for the day. I saw this on TikTok, so I ordered it and explained to him how if Mella is red, we have to sleep, and when Mella turns green, it's time to play. The first night, he sat up a couple of times in the night and looked at it and laid back down. We've been using it for almost a week, and he stays in bed until it's green without any crying or complaining, so it fixed my problem so fast! You do have to toggle the night light on to red if you want it in all night. You could choose other colors, too, but red and green worked well since he has a car seat with red and green stop lights, so easy connection. Anyways, I highly recommend it! He loves to check on Mella during the day and see if it's asleep." — Mpt2 $49.99 at Amazon This image shows two of the cabinets next to each other! Check out a TikTok of the shoe rack in action. Promising review: "Love the shoe storage. Mostly bought for the look, not practicality. These fit sandals/anything flat like Birks, running shoes, and Air Forces fine, but anything taller won't fit. Six shoes total for one cabinet fit. Would buy again. Does as advertised and easy on the eyes." — mmaj $59.89+ at Amazon Check it out on TikTok! It displays 8.5 by 11 with the (included) mat and 10 by 12.5 without! Promising review: "I cannot say enough great things about this. Got it, hung it, put in art and IMMEDIATELY turned around and ordered a second one. Two are a must so you can hang one vertically and one horizontally. What an ideal solution to displaying art. If it's left out it inevitably gets torn or ruined. This keeps it safe, and displays it perfectly on the wall. It comes with pockets and a place to hold bottles/sippy cups, which can be very handy. My 8-month-old weights around 30–35 lbs, and he's basically attached to me 24/7, carrying all day was killing my back and arms! We bought some to gift to other people too, and I will get some for my son to use at college. Made of a heavy terry cloth that can be thrown right in the washer when needed. We used towels before under our bowls, but these cradle the bowls so they are easier to hold. We bought some bigger plate sizes too." — Heidi J. $19.99 at Amazon I bought this myself and already love it — no having to squeeze out (and waste) dish soap and I love having a handy place to keep my sponge that doesn't drip water all over the review: "I first saw this on TikTok and I wanted it immediately. It did not disappoint! It fits nicely. I got lots of compliments on it! Someone else pointed out to me that the fabric looks expensive and just like another bustier listed on PrettyLittleThings for over twice the price." — Elizabeth $23.99+ at Amazon Check it out on TikTok!Promising review: "This was the best gift from my husband! Love reading in bed without having to use lamp light. Three settings of brightness are perfect, it's lightweight, and best of all holds a charge literally forever! Highly recommend!" — Rick Angelo $12.99 at Amazon Amazon Just don't wash or dry your loads with the turtle inside. Check out a TikTok of the Laundry Turtle in review: "I saw this product on a 'Best of Amazon' YouTube video. I instantly saw the value of being able to switch laundry from the washing machine to the dryer in one easy motion, so I ordered it. It makes switching laundry so easy! It's also a great replacement for laundry baskets. I recently stayed with an ill family member, knowing that I'd be doing laundry at her house. I hauled along my Laundry Turtle, which folded up into a small bundle, and used it at her house. No matter the size of the load, one revolution of the washing machine put all of the damp clothes in the Turtle and made transferring laundry so easy! I agree that it is one of Amazon's best household items." — Jeril $27.99 at Amazon Several reviewers say they just throw theirs right in the washing machine to clean it! They also make a smaller one designed for the bikini area and a long, narrow back scrubber for hard-to-reach areas. Promising review: "I'll be honest; I thought this would be another thing I saw on Amazon via TikTok that was way overhyped. I have [very] dry skin, and despite using lotions, oils, and gentle body washes, I'm an ashy mess. This thing is incredible. I don't think I've ever been this exfoliated in my life! Not a single flake or scaly patch in sight. 1,000/10." — Ruth Bromberg $5.99 at Amazon Amazon Checkout a TikTok of the duvet clips in action. Promising review: "I was super worried about if I would have enough of the Pinions, and I totally do! My duvet is kinda thick and the Pinions pierced through with no problems! Plus with a little extra room if I had some extra layers. I REALLY like how you have to have the magnet tool to pull them apart. Other duvet tools I've seen just plain suck. The clips are never reliable and the ties just don't stay. This handy dandy tool ENSURES nothing will move. I placed one on each corner of the duvet and then I put one on the middle edge between each corner. Absolutely no moving! Don't walk, RUN TO BUY THIS. I also like how unnoticeable they are." — Abigayle Mishler $17.95 at Amazon Check out the brush cleaner in action on review: "I now have exceptionally clean makeup brushes! It is small enough to leave on my vanity, and I can easily keep my brushes clean. This is one of those products that will make you wonder how you did without it!" — LJLWPromising review: "I used to wash my brushes by hand. It took forever because I have nearly 200 makeup brushes. This brush cleaner is a game changer. To use, put some water and a very little dish soap in it, turn it on, and put your brush in. The cleaner has nubs that scrub your brush. I quickly rinse the soap out under running water. My brushes are so much cleaner now. The task is relaxing instead of a chore." — TaleSpinner $19.99 at Amazon Promising review: "When you think you don't need it. But TikTok thinks you do. I definitely am glad that this product was what I need. Works on laptop, tablets, and phones! Love it! Highly recommend this product!" — Laura Schlutt $10.98 at Amazon Check out one way to style them on TikTok!Promising review: "The second these are out of the laundry, they're on my feet. The slouchy look is so cute and paired with a white tennis shoe — it's my favorite thing to wear on my feet. They're so comfortable, very soft, and they don't leave marks on your legslike most such a socks do from being too tight." — Elisa $21 at Amazon Amazon Check out a TikTok of the cord organizer in action. Promising review: "I got this for my minimalist husband who hates getting 'things' for gifts, almost as much as he hates clutter. He was practically giddy after we installed several of these on various kitchen appliances. It's not just storage — but moving the appliance around from its storage location to the countertop is a nicer experience. He was seriously swinging around a food processor with one hand saying 'this is so much neater!' To each their own I suppose. For us normies, it does exactly what it's supposed to. Easy to stick on, I like that it holds the plug neatly as well. I would love if it came in white, but the gray is a nice neutral." — Elizabeth L. $19.99 at Amazon It includes includes a toothpaste dispenser (that'll squeeze out every last ounce from the tube!) four cups and holders and a place to store your review: "I am SO happy I bought this for my bathroom! It looks so clean, it is easy to install, and it is easy to clean when toothpaste gets on it! The design is simple, yet genius! I Spent $125 to Generate 5 AI Videos a Day With Google's Veo 3. The Sound Sets It Apart

I am just a girl who wants to be on a warm beach but most of the time, I'm trapped behind a computer screen. So, like any reporter who tests and reviews AI, I make my days more bearable by using these AI programs to create alternative-timeline versions of myself somewhere where Jimmy Buffett is playing and you can smell the salt. Here's what Google's newest AI video model, Veo 3, came up with. My beach bonfire party dream-turned-prompt is usually my first test as I put a new AI generator through its paces. And I admit, I had pretty low expectations for Veo 3. While I did see some social media posts gawking at Veo 3's capabilities, I've seen enough slop and hallucinations to approach with skepticism. Google's AI creative products, in particular, have always felt like a bit of an afterthought to me, something the company adds on to its extensive Gemini offerings to compete with the other tech heavyweights. But this year at the company's annual I/O developer conference, Google's Imagen 4, Veo 3 and Flow all took center stage. So I dove into Veo 3. Without spoiling anything, I walked away from Veo feeling like this was the next natural step for Google, with one feature in particular giving the company an edge that might make it a more serious contender in the AI creative space. But there are serious limits and annoyances that I hope are addressed soon. Here's how my experience went and what you need to know. Veo 3 availability, pricing and privacy Veo 3 is currently available for Gemini Ultra users in the US and enterprise Vertex users. In other words, you'll need to pay up to play around with the new Veo. Ultra is Gemini's newest, priciest tier at $250 per month. (It's currently half off for $125 per month for three months.) Vertex is Google's AI enterprise platform, and you'll know if you have access to it. If you don't want to pay hundreds of dollars for access to Google's AI video tools -- and I don't blame you -- you can try out Veo 2 with Google AI's Pro plan. I found that the one-month free trial is enough time to figure out if you want to pay the $20 per month fee to continue using it. You can check out my hands-on testing with that model for more info. Google's Gemini privacy policy says the company can collect your info to improve its technologies, which is why it recommends not sharing any confidential information with Gemini. You also agree to Google's prohibited use policy, which outlaws the creation of abusive or illegal content. My wild ride with Veo 3 The most impressive thing about Veo 3 is its new audio generation capabilities. You don't have to tell Gemini in your prompt that you want sound; it will automatically add it. This is a first among competitors like OpenAI's Sora and Adobe's Firefly and it certainly gives Google a huge edge. While the AI audio is a nice perk, it isn't perfect. If you're familiar with the somewhat clunky nature of AI-generated music and dialogue, you'll be able to identify it immediately. But there were times when it flowed more naturally. The clashing metal sounds and grunts in my alien fight scene were timed perfectly to their attacks, something that would've been difficult to add on my own afterward. But the dinosaur-like aliens also literally say "roar" and "hiss" instead of making those noises. My kayaker's paddling very nearly matched up with the water sloshing sound. The nature ambience in that video was particularly lovely and added a layer of depth that's been missing from AI videos. My dream beach bonfire partiers didn't sound like any party I've ever been to, but still, points for being first and relatively unproblematic. Of course, while the audio was nice, it doesn't take away from the weird eccentricities that continue to plague AI generators. I ran into a few hiccups, mostly with people's faces, a notoriously hard thing for AI to mimic. But compared to the glaringly obvious errors I ran into with Veo 2, the new generation does appear to have made real improvements as Google claimed it did. I run into hallucinations a lot when I'm testing AI image and video generators, so the first thing I do is look for whether a service gives me the ability to edit it. Veo 3 doesn't offer any of these, which is a bummer. It's certainly something that's going to make it less useful for professional creators, who are used to more fine-tuning editing tools and need to make precise tweaks for their projects. You can send a follow-up prompt asking for specific changes. For example, I asked Veo to change the angle in the previous video so I could see her face, which the program handled well. With Veo 3, you'll typically have to wait 3 to 5 minutes for a new, edited video to load, though. Veo 3 has the longest generation time of any AI video generator I've tested. But the addition of audio to the videos excuses the longer wait time in my eyes. The worst part of Veo 3 is how quickly I hit my daily generation limit. After only five videos, I was barred for an entire 24-hour period -- something that really annoyed me and made it much harder to assess. Google's VP of Gemini and Google Labs, Josh Woodward, said in a post on X/Twitter that Ultra subscribers like me have the highest number of generations that reset daily, in the regular Gemini app and in Flow. And for me, that limit in Gemini was five videos. Flow's limit is 125, according to Woodward. I reached out to Google to get clarity on what the daily limit is for Ultra users creating through Gemini that Woodward mentions. Here's the response: "Google AI Ultra subscribers get the highest level of access to Veo 3, our state-of-the-art video generation model, which they can use in both the Gemini app and Flow, our new AI filmmaking tool." The limits are another sign that this isn't a tool meant for professional creation and iterative editing. You need to spend time thoughtfully crafting your prompt and if Google flubs a face or glitches, you're likely to run out of credits fast and end up out of luck. Veo 3 is better suited for AI enthusiasts who want to dip their toes in video creation, not creators experimenting with AI. Is Veo 3 worth the cost? After an underwhelming experience with Veo 2, I had reservations about what to expect in the usefulness and accuracy of Veo 3. But the new model was impressive, the audio especially, even though it's still missing some key features. Let me be clear: There is no rational reason to spend hundreds of dollars on a Gemini Ultra plan only to use Veo 3. If you want to dabble for fun, you can do that with Veo 2 for hundreds less per month, and if you're a creative professional, Veo 3 still lacks crucial features like editing. The Ultra plan does offer other features, like YouTube Premium, 30 terabytes of space and access to the newest Gemini models. So if you want any of those things, then, yeah, pay up and go play around with Veo 3. But it's not worth it on its own. Veo 3 isn't the revolutionary upgrade those social media posts might lead you to believe. It is the next generation, better than last month's Veo 2, and it shows real promise in Google's future AI video endeavors. But be prepared to pay up if you want to try it out.
