Russia's revived Soviet music contest to take place in September

Korea Herald01-05-2025

MOSCOW (AFP) — Russia will hold its "Intervision" music competition in September, organizers announced on Wednesday, after authorities revived the Soviet-era competition that was meant to rival Eurovision.
Moscow has been banned from taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest over its Ukraine offensive and President Vladimir Putin earlier this year ordered for the USSR-version of the contest to be held in Russia this year.
The Intervision Song Contest — mainly made up of the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc states — was held in the 1960s and 1970s to rival the West.
Organizers said that Intervision 2025 will be held in Moscow's LIVE Arena on Sept. 20, promising artists from "various continents" and "unforgettable emotions."
The European Broadcasting Union, the organizer of Eurovision, banned Russia after its February 2022 offensive in Ukraine, meaning it cannot enter or broadcast the contest.
Russia has in previous years been a serious Eurovision contender, and took part in the contest since 1994, winning it in 2008.
Putin issued a decree in February setting out a plan to hold the alternative contest.
The Intervision Song Contest was held in the 1960s and 1970s, before being replaced by the Sopot International Song Festival, held in the Polish Baltic coast city of Sopot, and drawing artists from the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc.
Alla Pugacheva, Russia's most famous artist considered as the country's pop queen, won the competition in 1978.

Iran summons French envoy after FM's Cannes

TEHRAN, Iran (AFP) -- France's envoy in Tehran was summoned Sunday over "insulting" comments by France's foreign minister after an Iranian film won the top prize at the Cannes film festival, state media reported. In a post on social media platform X after dissident filmmaker Jafar Panahi won the Palme d'Or on Saturday, Jean-Noel Barrot called his victory "a gesture of resistance against the Iranian regime's oppression." Panahi, 64, was awarded the Palme d'Or for the political drama "It Was Just an Accident" -- a film in which five Iranians confront a man they believe tortured them in prison. Several actresses also appear in the film without veils, in violation of Iran's strict dress code for women. "Following the insulting remarks and unfounded allegations by the French minister, the charge d'affaires of that country in Tehran has been summoned to the ministry," state news agency IRNA reported on Sunday. It said Iran condemns "the misuse by the French government" of the Cannes festival "to advance its political agenda against the Islamic Republic." A story inspired by his own time in detention, Panahi's film led critics' polls throughout the week at Cannes. Panahi's victory had been ignored by the state broadcaster, which instead focused on a state-aligned "Resistance" film festival. This event awards pro-Palestinian works or those about the eight-year Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s. The conservative Fars news agency had suggested the Cannes jury's choice was politically motivated, saying it was "not uninfluenced by the political issues surrounding Jafar Panahi inside Iran." Reformist newspapers Etemad, Shargh and Ham Mihan reported the win on their websites but did not feature it on their front pages, possibly due to the timing of the announcement. Panahi, who has been banned from filmmaking in Iran since 2010 and jailed multiple times, addressed the Cannes audience with a call for national unity. He confirmed plans to go home to Iran immediately. Asked late Saturday if he feared arrest, he said, "Not at all. Tomorrow we are leaving." On Sunday, he posted an Instagram picture of himself with his film crew, saying, "Travelers return home." It was only the second time an Iranian director has won the Palme d'Or, after the late Abbas Kiarostami received the honour for "Taste of Cherry" in 1997.

Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night' gets Joseon-era makeover

Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" will be reimagined as a Joseon-era (1392-1910) comedy in a new production by the National Theater Company of Korea, running June 12 to July 6 at the Myeongdong Theater in Seoul. The beloved comedy is transported to a coastal Joseon village, giving the play a Korean cultural flair while remaining faithful to the original's whirlwind of romantic mischief and mistaken identities. The story begins with twin siblings Shin-ae and Mi-eon being separated by a shipwreck, each believing the other to be lost. Washed ashore alone, Shin-ae disguises herself as a man named Man-deuk for safety and enters the service of Oh Sa-ryong, a young nobleman who is in love with a noblewoman from the same village, Seo-rin. When Man-deuk is sent to deliver Oh's heartfelt message, Seo-rin unexpectedly falls for the disguised Shin-ae, unaware of her true identity. Meanwhile, Mi-eon also arrives in the same village, triggering a cascade of confusion and comic mishaps as the villagers mistake the twins for one another. Directed and adapted by Im Do-wan, the playful adaptation weaves the timeless charm of the Bard with Korean elements. Traditional pansori and contemporary rap coexist on stage, while the production's costumes, multimedia and set design blend modern aesthetics with historical inspiration. The production is a collaboration between the National Theater Company of Korea and the Daejeon Arts Center, where it premiered on Dec. 21, 2024. English subtitles will be provided on Thursdays and Sundays (except June 12 and 15).
