Rejuvenated Bublik beats Medvedev for Halle triumph

Yahoo4 hours ago

Kazakhstan's erratic but brilliant Alexander Bublik has beaten Daniil Medvedev for the first time in his career to claim the Halle title, winning 6-3 7-6 (7-4) to continue his remarkable resurgence.
Bublik had lost his previous six meetings against Russian Medvedev, winning only one set in the process, but produced a superb exhibition of grass-court tennis to end that streak on Sunday.
Former world No.1 Medvedev has now lost his last six Tour-level finals.
What a beautiful reaction ❤️This is your moment Bublik, take it all in… #ATPHalle pic.twitter.com/FN59jplbsr

So often the showman, Bublik, fresh from his run to the quarter-finals in the French Open, showed his new maturity with a calm display in the final as he continued the form that saw him beat world No.1 Jannik Sinner in the last-16 this week.
The 27-year-old broke the Medvedev serve in the eighth game of the first set and then held his own with ease to move ahead during an incredible 12-point winning streak.
Medvedev had a set point when Bublik served at 4-5 in the second set but could do nothing as his wily opponent feathered a delicate drop shot from behind the baseline.
Third seed Medvedev then led 4-1 in the tiebreaker but the unseeded Bublik stormed back to complete a memorable week and repeat his 2023 title run on the German grass.
"I had such tough months since last Wimbledon to probably this summer," said Bublik, who was outside the top 75 as recently as last month but will rise to 30 on Monday.
"I was close to calling it quits after Wimbledon because I was not enjoying it any more. Now this is happening. I don't know. Quarters at the French? Winner here? I have no words.
"I have never beaten Daniil. He's a super tough player to play, especially with my style, and today everything clicked in mentally and physically. That's one of the wins of my career."

Exclusive: Xhaka pushing for Milan move as Leverkusen resist

Granit Xhaka wants Milan with all his heart—he sees it as a bus he can't afford to miss at this stage of his career, especially as he's no longer a youngster. Bayer Leverkusen's hesitations, having already dismantled the squad by letting go of their most sought-after talents, stem from the fact that selling the midfielder would be another heavy blow to their outlook. But Xhaka has made his choice and doesn't intend to go back. LEVERKUSEN, GERMANY – APRIL 12: Granit Xhaka of Bayer 04 Leverkusen is seen during the Bundesliga match between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and 1. Hoffenheim take interest in Japanese defender Koki Machida

Kicker reports that TSG 1899 Hoffenheim are attempting to bring Japanese centre-back Koki Machida to the Bundesliga. The 17-times-capped Samurai international currently plies his trade for Belgian Pro League champions Union Saint-Gilloise. Negotiations for a purchase of the €11m-valued professional are ongoing. Hoffenheim continue to desperately find themselves in need of a defensive revamp following an awful season in which they conceded 68 league goals. Some help has already arrived in the form of versatile Brazilian defender Bernardo, who joined on a free transfer from Bochum. Advertisement Kicker also reiterates previous reports that the Sinsheimers have reconsidered their previous decision to part company with Norwegian loanee Leo Østigård. Hoffenehim presently negotiate a potential permanent purchase of the Norwegian from his parent club Stade Rennes. Kicker claims that Hoffenheim have negotiated down Rennes' initial €10m asking price. Machida may be seen as an alternative to Østigård. The 27-year-old has something of an inconsistent season and may be available for a price significantly below his current estimated market value. Tennis stars clash following game-ending handshake: 'Nobody likes you'

Professional tennis players Maria Sakkari and Yulia Putintseva were seen in a heated clash following their match at the Bad Homberg Open on Sunday. Sakkari defeated Putintseva 7-5, 7-6 (6) to move on to the next round of the tennis tournament. As the two competitors came to the net, Putintseva slapped Sakkari's hand and failed to make eye contact as she walked toward the chair umpire. Sakkari started jawing at Putintseva, and Putintseva responded with a curtsy. Sakkari didn't appear to like what Putintseva said after that and stepped over toward her side to address the comment. "Nobody likes you," Sakkari was heard telling Putintseva on the broadcast. Sakkari addressed the incident in her post-match interview after Putintseva walked toward the locker room. "I don't think she's going to invite me for dinner for the rest of our lives, but I don't care, to be honest," she said, via "I have very good friends, and I'll go to dinner with them. Let me leave it here, and just say that I have respect for her as a player, but that's it." Sakkari advanced to the Round of 16 and awaits her next opponent. The Greek star will have Wimbledon on her mind as she competes in this tournament. She has two career singles titles in her career and made it as far as the third round of Wimbledon four times, including 2024. Putintseva, of Kazakhstan, has three singles titles in her career. She made it as far as the fourth round of Wimbledon last year. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
