Lithium-ion battery fires on the rise in Montreal, fire service warns

Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly the cause of fires in Montreal, and the city's fire service is working to spread awareness about this growing problem.
That's according to an annual report published by the Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal (SIM) that says there's been a 195 per cent increase in lithium fires over the last two years.
There were 24 such fires in 2022, 43 in 2023 and 71 in 2024.
This rise is largely due to the increasing popularity of micromobility devices (scooters, electric bicycles, etc.) powered by this type of battery, the report says.
Along with intensifying awareness campaigns, the report says the SIM is working to modify municipal regulations to better regulate the use, storage and disposal of lithium-ion batteries.
This report comes after a large-scale lithium battery fire in September sent a thick cloud of toxic gas over eastern Montreal.
In that case, 15,000 kilograms of lithium batteries inside a shipping container caught fire at the Port of Montreal.
Batteries are 'basically everywhere'
Robert Rousseau, a divisional chief with the fire service, said lithium-ion batteries are also found in portable electronics like smartphones and laptops.
"There's a presence basically everywhere," he said. "If you go back about 10 years ago at home, we used desktop computers ... Now everybody has a laptop. Nobody has landlines anymore. So everybody has a cellphone."
There are also power tools and other devices powered by these batteries, he said.
Rousseau said the Montreal fire service is prepared to manage fires with specialized tools and containers that control and suppress fires.
"We can put the batteries on them when they ignite, so it stops the thermal reaction," he said.
Rousseau said it is important that people are using certified batteries that are in good condition. He said charging cables must also be in good condition. It's important to use original or approved accessories.
Montreal certainly isn't the only Canadian city tackling lithium battery safety in recent years. Authorities in cities like Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver have issued warnings.
There have been several deaths associated with lithium-ion battery fires across Canada. According to Vancouver Fire Rescue Services, five people were killed in the city in 2022 as a result of batteries.
In December, the Toronto Transit Commission board voted to ban electric bikes and scooters with lithium-ion batteries from TTC vehicles and stations during winter due to fire concerns.
Lithium-ion batteries generally safe
Randy Narine is among those who have been pushing for stricter regulations on transportation and storage of lithium batteries.
He is an Ontario-based firefighter and lithium-ion researcher with the Clean Energy Safety and Training Council of Canada, an organization dedicated to providing training and research to front-line workers and first responders in the clean energy sector.
He said lithium-ion battery products are safe when used responsibly.
"But then when you get these DIY batteries, these do-it-yourselfers, or a battery that's been abused — that is where there is more of a chance of something happening," he said.
Narine said that public safety is more than just an individual responsibility.
"The fire service needs to do more to educate the public and the manufacturers need to do more to educate the public," he said.
When the large fire in the Port of Montreal sent the cloud rolling into Montreal neighbourhoods, firefighters were seen breathing oxygen while walking the streets, talking to residents about the situation. About 100 people fled the area.
In that case, the lithium batteries in a storage container entered thermal runaway, which required firefighters to cool the container for hours, aided by a special drill from airport colleagues.
At the time, Martin Guilbault, division chief with the Montreal fire service, said this was a first in his 32-year career, and he suspects this isn't the last large-scale lithium battery fire.
Batteries release gases when burning
Along with the fire safety risks, burning batteries release hazardous chemicals. Among them, hydrogen fluoride, which can cause chemical burns, eye irritation and respiratory distress.
Acute exposure can even lead to a risk of heart attack or stroke, according to McGill University epidemiology professor Jill Baumgartner. She said health risks depend on the length of exposure, pollutant concentrations and individual vulnerability.
Jinhyuk Lee, assistant professor of materials engineering at McGill University, advises against using high-wattage fast chargers, especially for less sophisticated devices, and recommends avoiding charging to 100 per cent.
He explained that higher energy storage in batteries increases risk. While modern phones and electric vehicles have software to prevent overheating, he said limiting the charge to 80 per cent is safer.
He said storing devices at a higher temperature or overusing devices can cause batteries to overheat.
Lee notes that nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) batteries, which store more energy, are less stable than lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, making LFP a safer option. The NMC batteries tend to be used in more sophisticated devices, like Teslas, and require extra safety features, he said.

Can AI safeguard us against AI? One of its Canadian pioneers thinks so

When Yoshua Bengio first began his work developing artificial intelligence, he didn't worry about the sci-fi-esque possibilities of them becoming self-aware and acting to preserve their existence. That was, until ChatGPT came out. "And then it kind of blew [up] in my face that we were on track to build machines that would be eventually smarter than us, and that we didn't know how to control them," Bengio, a pioneering AI researcher and computer science professor at the Université de Montréal, told As It Happens host Nil Köksal. The world's most cited AI researcher is launching a new research non-profit organization called LawZero to "look for scientific solutions to how we can design AI that will not turn against us." "We need to figure this out as soon as possible before we get to machines that are dangerous on their own or with humans behind [them]," he said. "Currently, the forces of market — the competition between companies, between countries — is such that there's not enough research to try to find solutions." Meet LawZero's conception: Scientist AI Bengio started LawZero using $40 million of donor funding. Its name references science fiction writer Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, a set of guidelines outlining the ethical behaviour of robots that prevents them from harming or opposing humans. In Asimov's 1985 novel Robots and Empire, the author introduced the Zeroth Law: "A robot cannot cause harm to mankind or, by inaction, allow mankind to come to harm." With this in mind, Bengio said LawZero's goal is to protect people. "Our mission is really to work towards AI that is aligned with the flourishing of humanity," he said. WATCH | Advocates call for better AI regulation: Why more needs to be done to regulate the use of AI 1 year ago Duration 6:07 New research out of Western University is shining a light on the federal government's use of artificial intelligence through a Tracking Automated Government Register. Joanna Redden, an associate professor of Information and Media Studies and co-director at Starling: Just Technologies. Just Societies. and Data Justice Lab, joined London Morning to talk about the data and concerns about AI use. Several AI technologies in recent months have been reported to undermine, deceive, and even manipulate people. For example, a study earlier this year found that some AIs will refuse to admit defeat after a chess match, and instead hack the computer to cheat the results. AI firm Anthropic detailed last month that during a systems test, its AI tool Claude Opus 4 tried to blackmail the engineer so that it would not be replaced by a newer update. These are the kind of scenarios that drove Bengio to design LawZero's guardian artificial intelligence, Scientist AI. According to a proposal by Bengio and his colleagues, Scientist AI is a "safe" and "trustworthy" artificial intelligence that would function as a gatekeeper and protective system for humans to continue to benefit from this technology's innovation with intentional safety. It's also "non-agentic," which Bengio and his colleagues define as having "no built-in situational awareness and no persistent goals that can drive actions or long-term plans." In other words, what differentiates agentic and non-agentic AI is their autonomous capacities to act in the world. How would Scientist AI work? Can it work? Scientist AI, Bengio says, would be paired with other AIs, and act as a kind of "guardrail." It would estimate the "probability that an [AI]'s actions will lead to harm," he told U.K. newspaper, the Guardian. If that chance is above a certain threshold, Scientist AI will reject its counterpart's suggested action. WATCH | A 2024 feature interview with Yoshua Bengio at his home in Montreal: Artificial intelligence 'godfather' Yoshua Bengio opens up about his hopes and concerns 1 year ago Duration 18:00 But can we guarantee that this guardian AI will also not turn against us? David Duvenaud, an AI safety researcher who will act as an advisor for LawZero, says it's a rational concern. "If you're skeptical about our ability to control AI with other AI, or really be sure that they're going to be acting in our best interest in the long run, you are absolutely right to be worried," Duvenaud, an assistant professor of computer science and statistics at the University of Toronto, told CBC. Still, he says, we have to try. "I think Yoshua's plan is less reckless than everyone else's plan," he said. AI researcher Jeff Clune agrees. "There are many research challenges we need to solve in order to make AI safe. The important thing is that we are trying, including allocating significant resources to this critical issue," Clune, a University of British Columbia computer scientist, said in an email. "That is one reason the creation of LawZero is so important." According to Bengio's announcement for LawZero,"the Scientist AI is trained to understand, explain and predict, like a selfless idealized and platonic scientist." Resembling the work of a psychologist, Scientist AI "tries to understand us, including what can harm us. The psychologist can study a sociopath without acting like one." Bengio says he hopes this widespread reckoning on the rapid, yet alarming, evolution of AI will catalyze a political movement to start "putting pressure on governments" worldwide to regulate it. "I often get the question of whether I'm optimistic or pessimistic," he said. "What I say is that it doesn't really matter. What matters is what each of us can do to move the needle towards a better world."

Should You Buy the Post-Earnings Dip in Broadcom Stock?

Broadcom (AVGO) shares closed down 5% on Friday after the chipmaker reported a strong fiscal Q2 but issued in-line guidance only for its current financial quarter. However, analysts recommend buying AVGO shares on the post-earnings dip since the company's release indicated continued momentum in its artificial intelligence offerings. Despite today's decline, Broadcom stock is up more than 70% versus its year-to-date low. Buy Broadcom Stock as AI Is Getting Stronger Broadcom guided for $5.1 billion in AI revenue for its current quarter – which translates to a much better-than-expected 60% increase on a year-over-year basis. According to Melius Research analysts, investors should load up on AVGO stock on any dip as 'AI is strong and getting stronger due to incremental opportunities in networking and inferencing.' Melius expects sustained momentum in the company's top line as more of its software customers switch to 'higher-value' VMware subscriptions. Plus, the firm has confidence in Broadcom's ability to sign at least four more AI customers that it believes will contribute rather significantly to its revenue between 2027 and 2030. A dividend yield of 0.95% tied to Broadcom stock makes up for another good reason to have it in your investment portfolio. AVGO Shares Look Headed for $290 What's also worth mentioning is that AVGO doesn't expect its artificial intelligence revenue to grow at an accelerated pace in the near-term only. In fact, the chipmaker forecasts similar growth rate (60% year-on-year) for this year as a whole – and for 2026 as well, which TD Cowen dubbed a 'strong signal of confidence in Broadcom's AI networking and XPU franchises' in a research note today. On Friday, the investment firm raised its price objective on the semiconductor stock to $290 that indicates potential upside of another 18% from current levels. Wall Street Rates Broadcom at 'Strong Buy' Other Wall Street analysts are not as bullish on AVGO shares primarily because they've already had a huge run over the past two months. The consensus rating on Broadcom stock currently sits at ' Strong Buy ' with the mean target of about $253 indicating potential upside of 3% only.
