As a kid, airplanes felt magical. Standing at the edge of a runway, the metallic scent of jet fuel in the air, I watched my dad point out aircraft as they roared past. In his crisp pilot's uniform, he seemed like a hero, teaching me the names of different models and filling my imagination with stories of flight.
But today, that magic has dimmed. The same metallic scent now reminds me of the fossil fuels stealing my generation's future. Airplanes may be awe-inspiring, but the industry is part of the system driving worsening hurricanes, wildfires, and droughts, and contributing to rising sea levels. My dad's job — a career that has provided for our family for decades — relies on burning fossil fuels. It's a personal tension that mirrors the larger fight between sustaining livelihoods and tackling the climate crisis.
As a climate organizer fighting for a Green New Deal, green union jobs, stronger public schools, and worker power, I've learned that this tension isn't a barrier to solutions but a pathway to them. To win climate action, we must topple the fossil fuel industry. But this fight isn't about vilifying workers like my dad. It's about dismantling a system that exploits both labor and the planet for profit. Corporate greed and corruption, not workers, are the common enemy.
The global airline industry burns tens of billions of gallons of jet fuel annually, contributing millions of tons of CO2 to the atmosphere. Airline CEOs rake in astronomical salaries while our schools burn and our workers face grueling conditions.
In 2023, Delta CEO Ed Bastian earned more than $34.2 million, receiving a massive one-time bonus for shepherding the company through the COVID pandemic. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby made almost $18.6 million while United's workers were on strike. And ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods raked in $36.9 million in 2023; yet in the years since, our taxpayer dollars have gone toward battling the estimated $250 billion-plus in damages and economic losses caused by the recent Los Angeles wildfires and the nearly $80 billion from Hurricane Helene in the Southeast, costly disasters fueled by the very industry he profits from. This is part of a larger pattern: Across the airline and fossil fuel industries CEOs rake in billions while their workers struggle with toxic air, unsafe conditions, and inadequate pay. The same forces driving the climate crisis are exploiting the labor that keeps the world running.
This reality is personal for me. My dad has worked in aviation for over 25 years, starting at Continental Airlines in 1999, he told me in a phone conversation. 'For much of that time, I worked under broken labor contracts, earning a shockingly low income despite grueling schedules that kept me away from home for days on end.'
It's a story that's all too common in industries tied to fossil fuels. These workers — whether they're flight attendants, mechanics, fuel handlers, or truckers— make our world run, yet they've been left behind by the climate movement.
For years, I hid my dad's job in climate organizing spaces, fearing judgment. The reactions are exhausting to deal with. I recall a meeting where someone blamed airline workers for climate change. I bit my tongue, but later, I called my dad. 'Do you ever feel like people blame you for the climate crisis?' I asked. He paused, then told me that most of his colleagues want the same things my peers and I are fighting for — clean air and water, a better world for our children. But in the meantime, he said, we have to pay health insurance, rent, et cetera. His words stuck with me. That disconnect I've lived in my organizing — between workers and the climate movement — is exactly what the fossil fuel industry wants because a fractured movement can't win.
To build a better future, we need a united front. The climate movement must center workers and their needs, showing that climate action isn't about job loss; it's about job creation and putting power back into the hands of laborers. This means embracing policies like the Green New Deal. It's about making clear, tangible connections between climate action and economic security. For example, transitioning to renewable energy could create millions of good-paying union jobs in industries like wind and solar, while investments in public transit could provide stable employment for workers currently tied to polluting industries.
We've already seen what solidarity can achieve. Airline unions have fought to improve safety standards, secure better contracts, and protect jobs. In August 2024, flight attendants at one major airline voted 99.99% to authorize a strike if leadership wouldn't meet their demands for fair treatment and better pay. Across the country, union petitions rose by 27% in the 2024 fiscal year, with workers in industries from retail to transportation taking bold action. These fights show that workers are waking up to their power. Now, they need allies in the climate movement.
As an organizer with the Sunrise Movement, I've seen how powerful these alliances can be. In January, I helped organize a protest outside Chevron's Richmond, California, refinery demanding the corporation help pay for the schools, homes, and businesses lost to the Los Angeles fires. To our surprise, oil and gas truck drivers honked in support as they drove by.
Later that day, I called my dad to tell him about it. 'You know,' he said, 'most of us, even those of us in these industries, agree the system needs to change. But it's hard to see a way out when your paycheck depends on it.' His words reminded me that we're not fighting against workers; we're fighting alongside them.
The climate movement must actively support labor by showing up for picket lines, advocating for stronger unions, and demanding corporate accountability. This includes lifting up workers across industries, from the Amazon Teamsters to the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) to my dad's union, the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA). It means listening to their concerns, addressing their fears, and building solutions that prioritize their well-being.
Together, we can create a world where every worker has a good-paying job, every family breathes clean air, and no one is left behind. To win this fight, we need everyone — climate organizers, labor unions, and everyday people — standing shoulder to shoulder. We can build a better system, one that supports workers, the planet, and generations to come.

Ivy's First LP In 14 Years Has Adam Schlesinger On Every Song
Beloved New York-reared indie trio Ivy were inactive for the better part of eight years before group member Adam Schlesinger died of COVID-19 during the early phase of the pandemic in 2020. Since then, surviving husband-and-wife duo Dominque Durand and Andy Chase have paid tribute to Schlesinger in a moving video retrospective and overseen several back catalog reissues, but there was no new Ivy album on the horizon — until now. Durand, Chase and longtime multi-instrumentalist Bruce Driscoll have combed through their demo archives to surface the previously unreleased material on Traces of You, which will emerge Sept. 5 through Bar/None Records. Each of the 10 tracks offers contributions from Schlesinger, including lead single 'Say You Will,' which was built from a 2009 demo where he played bass and keyboard. R.E.M./Atoms for Peace drummer Joey Waronker plays on the finished version. The trio, who formed in 1994 but slowed down in the 2000s while Schlesinger devoted more time to Fountains of Wayne, last released an album in 2011 with After Hours. 'The songs here were all unused and abandoned ideas from the various albums and film scores we worked on,' the band members tell SPIN of the Traces of You material. 'We'd never released any parts of them.' The resulting music is amongst the most diverse Ivy have ever released, from the bass- and keyboard-driven 'Fragile People' and the wistful, undulating title track to 'The Great Unknown,' which has an almost Garbage-y, electro feel and the tender, acoustic guitar-led 'Hate That It's True.' Band members say album opener 'The Midnight Hour' was the most complete of the fragments, as 'the first verse and chorus were sung back when they were originally demoed. Adam's bass was there and Andy had played all the guitar and keys. The second verse, the bridge and the 'feel the rush' vocal hook were all new additions when we got together with Bruce. What's amazing is that Dominique's vocals between verse one and two are seamless, as if no time had passed.' Schlesinger's Fountains of Wayne cohorts Brian Young (drums) and Jody Porter (guitar) later added parts to the recording. Ivy found themselves slipping back into some old work habits during the process, but thankfully, with ear-pleasing results. 'Dominique disliked the existing idea for 'Heartbreak,' which was Andy on guitar and keys and Adam on bass with the main part of the song you hear at the introduction,' they say. 'By the time we added the horn parts, the chorus chords and found depressing lyrics to offset the happy sound of the song, she came around.' Asked what fans will enjoy most about hearing Schlesinger's work on Traces of You, Ivy's members answer, 'on one song, you'll hear Adam on bass, the next on acoustic, the next on keys, the next he supplied a part of the melody with mumbled lyrics (which we deciphered and completed). His contributions were always gems and we never had to make them work with what we were doing. They were always essential to the idea, or we wouldn't work on the track.' Review: ‘The Life of Chuck' is Stephen King at his worst
'The Life of Chuck' is so earnest and sincerely made that it will probably be mistaken for a good movie by most people. Viewers may assume they're not enjoying it because there's something wrong with them — when really the movie is a badly arranged, scattered and mostly dull assemblage of phony merchandise. Based on a novella by Stephen King, the movie is told in three acts, shown in reverse chronological order. Unfortunately, the 'third' act, which is presented first, is the only section that's reasonably interesting. The 'second' act is merely watchable; and the 'first' and final act, is too long, plodding and sentimental. 'The Life of Chuck' begins as a seeming commentary on everything the world has experienced since COVID, though to King's credit, his novella was written pre-COVID and published in 2020. It presents a world in which every system, natural and man-made, is falling apart. And just like what happened with COVID, the shift from normal life to extreme-crisis mode happens in a brief span of time. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a schoolteacher trying to maintain a routine, while sink holes are opening up in the ground, the internet is failing, the power grid is collapsing and the night sky is looking strange. To add to the weirdness, there are posters and TV commercials everywhere celebrating a fellow named Chuck (Tom Hiddleston), though nobody knows who Chuck is. Curiously, though we soon find out everything about Chuck (lots more than we want to know, in fact), the movie never tells us the one thing that we do want to know about him, which is why his face is everywhere as the world is coming to an end. There is a dramaturgical lesson to be gleaned from 'The Life of Chuck': If you begin with the apocalypse, everything that follows is an anti-climax. It would be easier to care about Chuck's concerns if something cataclysmic weren't happening to everybody else. But that's just how it is with all of us and the apocalypse. It feels personal. The second section contains the movie's one genuinely good scene, in which Chuck, a buttoned-down man of about 40, starts dancing with polish and abandon to the rhythms provided by a street busker playing the drums. Hiddleston moves beautifully, and it's an altogether lovely set piece. But the final section goes back in time to Chuck's boyhood, and the movie degenerates into a sappy evocation of the past, with a very young Chuck living with his drunken grandfather (Mark Hamill) and learning how to dance. Really? Director and co-screenwriter Mike Flanagan must be a very nice guy, to assume he can involve an audience with such trivia, after they've more or less witnessed their own destruction. All the advertising for 'The Life of Chuck' has referred to it as 'life-affirming,' but this may be akin to referring to someone old as 'ageless' or dead as 'immortal' — that is, a comforting lie. The movie is maudlin and pessimistic and features a mildly sardonic voiceover narration by Nick Offerman that only serves to distance us from the action. Offerman is a good, appealing and versatile actor, but the use of his voice in narration is already becoming a cliché, like the voice of Morgan Freeman in documentaries. With all this in mind, there's no way to recommend 'The Life of Chuck.' However, if you do decide to see it, here's some advice: Watch the entire first section, not as though it's actually happening but as though it's a projection of Chuck's imagination. That would at least explain the primacy of Chuck in the movie's cosmic scheme and also reconcile some of the movie's chronological inconsistencies. Watching the movie in that way might also make the story more comprehensible and its emphases more justified. Yet it won't ameliorate the movie's dramatic inertia or, even worse, its unrelenting air of self-satisfied wistfulness.

The Myton House Farm, which has been a popular haunt for housing estate residents since the 1990s, reopened last month following a fresh revamp. It has become one of the first venues in the UK to launch under pub chain owner Marston's new Grandstand sports pub concept, offering "unbeatable" live sports experiences. From giant new screens and immersive sound to a new pool table and dedicated darts area, The Myton has been given a new look 'perfect for summer tournaments'. Deb was inspired during the COVID-19 pandemic to take action after noticing a lack of accessible defibrillators in the area - and thanks to her efforts, there are now over 100 defibrillators across the area. Today, no matter where you are in Ingleby Barwick, a defibrillator is within 500 metres. Both The Coronation and The Myton now feature unique local sports displays, with memorabilia sourced from the community.
