Plymouth close to appointing Tom Cleverley as head coach after Muslic's exit
Tom Cleverley is poised to be named Plymouth Argyle's head coach. The club, relegated to League One, want to appoint the 35-year-old former Watford manager after being impressed in further talks this week. Cleverley is expected to succeed Miron Muslic, who left for Schalke at the end of last month, with an appointment anticipated in the next 48 hours.
Cleverley, sacked by Watford last month after finishing 14th in the Championship, has been identified as Plymouth's number-one target after final interviews with four candidates on Wednesday. Discussions are believed to have been held with Jack Wilshere and Des Buckingham but neither made the final stages. The St Mirren manager, Stephen Robinson, is thought to have made the last round of talks. The recruitment has been led by David Fox, their former player who was recently appointed head of football operations, and the former Norwich sporting director Stuart Webber, a consultant.

Managerless Cardiff City have held advanced talks with Buckingham about their vacancy but the Leicester coach Brian Barry-Murphy is also thought to be in the frame. Buckingham is out of work after being sacked by Oxford. Barry-Murphy joined Leicester in December after three years coaching in Manchester City's academy. Barry-Murphy's only previous management role was at Rochdale.
Aaron Ramsey was a candidate for the job on a permanent basis after taking interim charge following Omer Riza's sacking in April but the Wales midfielder has agreed to prolong his playing career in Mexico with Pumas after his Cardiff contract expired. The 34-year-old is expected to sign a deal until the 2026 World Cup, for which Wales hope to qualify under Craig Bellamy.
On Wednesday Cardiff conceded the recruitment process 'had taken longer than expected'. In a statement, the club said: 'Having started with a blank canvas, we are proud of the final options presented to the board for consideration. This is an appointment that everyone wants to get right for the future of Cardiff City.'

Deluded Rangers fans are stuck in the past and here's why I'm staggered by their reaction to Russell Martin
Russell Martin has barely got his feet under the desk at Ibrox – yet even his choice of FOOTWEAR has copped flak from some Rangers fans. It shows you what he's up against. Martin committed the cardinal sin of not slipping on a pair of brogues for his unveiling the other day and it was just another thing to throw at the incoming head coach. Advertisement The response from some to his appointment has been staggering. It reeks to me of entitlement – and misguided entitlement in that. READ MORE: Dor Turgeman a Rangers transfer target as talks open over £4m swoop for 20 goal striker Russell Martin loves READ MORE: Rangers and Celtic fans send Russell Martin a unified message in astonishing Hotline first It seems to me there's a large element who didn't want Martin to get the gig and it's going to take a huge effort to win them over. But I'd like to know, who did they expect to get the job? In fact, we know the answer. I suspect some of them actually thought there was a chance Jose Mourinho was going to walk up the marble staircase this summer. Advertisement If not Jose, then Steven Gerrard. Or Davide Ancelotti – who obviously played Rangers like a piccolo. Either way, Rangers felt it was going to be some other big name, top level European coach in the hot seat. And now noses are out of joint that it's the guy who got sacked by Southampton months ago after a wretched time in the Premier League. They are coming at it the wrong way – and they are clearly stuck in the past. This isn't the Rangers team of the nineties. They are not going to get an elite European boss like Dick Advocaat strolling in. They are DELUDED. They've barely won a trophy for more than 10 years and there's another major rebuilding job required. Advertisement And it's going to take time. Martin is as good as anyone to do it. He's got decent experience as a manager. He had a tough job at MK Dons but he kept them up and progressed. It was similar at Swansea and then, don't forget, he did get Southampton promoted from the Championship. That's a brutal division to get out of, but he did it playing good football. If anyone watched their play-off win against Leeds, they would have seen it wasn't all tippy-tippy stuff either. They did it the hard way and weren't afraid to go long. Martin has a reputation for being a purist and stubborn in sticking to his ways, but he has shown he can adapt and evolve. Advertisement I only met him a few times when he was at Norwich City and he always came across as an intelligent, principled character. He wants his teams to play a certain way and Rangers fans should be happy to hear this stuff. When was the last time this club played attractive football, or had some kind of identity? I certainly can't remember it. There's no doubt Martin has a tough job on his hands. He will want to play his way but he'll need the players to do it. Recruitment will be absolutely critical to his plans, otherwise it will be an uphill struggle. But Rangers fans need to be patient and give him a chance. I'm not saying they will compete or even win the league this coming season. Advertisement But I am saying it's NOT impossible. You look at the results last season and where the points were dropped. It's not that big a stretch to think with some decent signings they can get the better of the rest of the teams in Scotland and then go up against Celtic. It might not happen straight away but there's no point writing him off before he's sat in the dugout. This is a support that welcomed the likes of Pedro Caixinha and Michael Beale with open arms, they gave Gerrard a thunderous welcome when he'd never been a manager. They were preparing to do it again for Ancelotti, despite having never been out from under his dad's wing. Advertisement Martin has got experience – and he's also got experience of life at the club. Some people are throwing his tough spell at Ibrox as a player at him. But that could work in his favour. He saw what it was like at rock bottom and the extreme pressure that comes with it. And yet he still took the job. That says a lot. A lot of folk would have run a mile. He's a strong character and he'll need to be. New Rangers boss Russell Martin He'll need to completely shake off the loser mentality at the club and that won't be straight forward. Martin could be a good appointment but, at the same time, I doubt Celtic will be too concerned. They need to take care of their own business – and they have to assume Rangers WILL be much improved next season. Advertisement It's a quiet part of the summer right now but time is ticking and Celtic will need to get into gear. In an ideal world you'd have two or three new faces reporting for the first day of pre-season, giving them time to bed in ahead of the new campaign and the crucial Champions League qualifiers. The transfer market doesn't always work that way but they will need to move quickly to bring in at the very least three new players. Celtic can't afford to sit on their hands and they have to see there's a chance to put the food down early while Rangers get used to the new coaching team and regime. Rodgers will be determined to pile on the pressure – and that's why Martin doesn't need it also coming from his own supporters.

Joe Aribo makes transfer decision as Russell Martin holds 'trust' card amid Rangers return clamour
Southampton playmaker Joe Aribo has reportedly told the club he wants to leave this summer. And Russell Martin's arrival at Rangers has left fans dreaming of a return to the Scottish Premiership for the Nigerian international. Advertisement Aribo is facing the prospect of playing Championship football next term after the Saints finished rock bottom of the Premier League - leading to his second relegation since leaving Ibrox behind in 2022. READ MORE: Robin Propper Rangers transfer exit 'agreed' with Dutch defender set for quickfire Eredivisie return READ MORE: Russell Martin's admission jolts Rangers transfer plan as Vardy, Darling, Ramazani and Metinho hit the fast track The 28-year-old has remained a fan favourite with the Light Blues' faithful having wrote his name in Rangers history by netting in the Europa League Final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt. Advertisement And it appears that a move away from St Mary's is on the cards after struggling for regular game time following Martin's sacking in the midst of a dismal English top flight campaign last term. Following the departure of the now-Gers' boss Martin, Aribo would manage just 10 appearances under Ivan Juric and Simon Rusk - barely making the matchday squad in the later stages of the campaign. The Daily Mail reported following the end of the campaign that the playmaker had made it clear to the club that he "wanted" an exit after dropping out of the top flight with just a year remaining on his contract. Advertisement And that could alert Martin as he looks to overhaul the squad this summer - who has made no secret of his admiration for Aribo. Speaking during their promotion-winning Championship campaign on midfielder, he said: "He's been a brilliant teammate, an amazing character as you know. He's humble, works hard, smiling. "I've not seen many players or teammates that are as popular as him, even when you're not playing, which is like the biggest credit to him, really." He has also noted how he fits his footballing philosophy perfectly, stating during his time with the Southampton: 'You trust him to go and put a certain level of performance on the pitch and to want the ball, to run for his teammates. Advertisement "He's a brilliant teammate and I think he's someone that you trust.' A return would test Aribo's career mantra - having previously insisted he likes to take himself out of his "comfort zone". After his move away from Glasgow, he said: "I think for me, what's so important is the timing of everything. "I had some offers down south but I chose to go away from home, come out of my comfort zone - which is so important for your own growth personally. "So for me, life is about little steps to get to your goal and that's why I made the choice to go up there. And then why I came back to Southampton." A move back to Ibrox and a Russell Martin reunion could prove tempting - but could Aribo look to test himself elsewhere first? 6 surging Rangers transfer headlines that go beyond Coady and Turgeman as £20m vision faces strict timeline
New Rangers boss Russell Martin is looking to add some new talent to the Ibrox dressing room before pre-season kicks off. That gives sporting director Kevin Thelwell until June 23 to snap up some new talent - with Conor Coady and Dor Turgerman on the agenda. Advertisement Negotiations have started with Leicester City over a potential deal to bring in experience Coady - while rising talent Turgerman has opened the door to a move by admitting he is ready to leave Maccabi Tel Aviv. READ MORE: Rangers transfer latest as Birmingham stance on Davies and Dowell revealed and Hagi told his 'last option' READ MORE: Joe Aribo makes transfer decision as Russell Martin holds 'trust' card amid Rangers return clamour But with the American revolution in full flow at Ibrox, CEO Patrick Stewart has promised Martin he'll be handed a significant chunk of the £20million set to be injected in the Premiership giants by their new owners.. Advertisement So, who else could be coming in? And who could be shown the door? Record Sport takes a look. Metinho Troyes' midfielder Metinho has caught Rangers' eye after a successful loan at FC Basel last term. But the Light Blues' face a battle to land the £5million-rated star as they prepare for his signature with the Swiss champions - who are looking to make the deal permanent despite not holding an option to buy. BaZ report it is "unclear" if Basel will be able to secure a return and meeting the valuation - leaving the door open for a move to Ibrox. Largie Ramazani Reports in Spain suggest Leeds United's Largie Ramazani is a target for the Light Blues' this summer - just a year on from his £10million move to Elland Road from Almeria. Advertisement And former Leeds' goalkeeper Paul Robinson has urged the club to cut their losses with the winger, telling MOT Leeds News: "He's struggled to get in the side this season and I think at times, to his detriment, he's been an impact player off the bench. And I think that's maybe how the manager sees him. "And if they can get better than what they've got, which is what they have to do to stay in the Premier League, he could be one that's allowed to leave. 'He had a little spell of games, didn't he, in the Championship, but didn't play regularly, week in and week out. And he may be one where Leeds need to cut their cloth accordingly. He may be one that's allowed to move on.' Cyriel Dessers The striker has already revealed he has interest from Greece this summer - but while on international duty he has set himself the goal of scoring more for Rangers. Cyriel Dessers When asked about his lack of recent caps for Nigeria, he said: 'I'm not the one making the choices. So, the only thing I can do is to perform well and score goals at my club … to ensure that I'm ready to be called up. Advertisement 'Once I'm called upon, I should be able to show what I can do for the team. That I would have to do with goals, hard work and dedication,' Nedim Bajrami Nedim Bajrami will hope to impress his new boss when he returns for pre-season - with Record Sport understanding the Albanian is keen to stay in Glasgow and fight for his place in the team. After a disappointing first season in Scotland, reports in Albania suggest that clubs in Germany and Italy are on alert for a potential deal. Harry Darling He has already been signed twice by Russell Martin at MK Dons and then for Swansea City - but Record Sport understands Rangers are currently not in the race for his signature as his contract ticks down. Advertisement Director of football Richard Montague says Swansea remains hopeful Harry Darling will sign a new deal with the club - despite reports that Norwich City are leading the race for the soon-to-be free agent. He told Wales Online: 'The ball is very much in Harry's court. "We made him what we thought was a very strong offer and I believe he would think is a very strong offer. Jamie Vardy It would be a landmark signing for the new owners - and Rangers are said to be among the club chasing Jamie Vardy after his Leicester City exit. The signing race for the 38-year-old appears to have lost a club - with Wrexham transfer consultant Les Reed telling the i: "Let's take an equivalent of Jamie Vardy. Advertisement "Everyone thinks he's out of contract, there's no transfer fee, Wrexham could do that. You're talking about players who are on £140,000 a week. "We are a million miles away from that. There is a certain level of Premier League player who, if they are on £100k to 150k-a-week, are still going to get closer to that if they move to the MLS or Saudi Arabia than if they go to Wrexham."
