Jalen Williams doesn't see old Durant-Westbrook Thunder squads as rivals
Jalen Williams doesn't see old Durant-Westbrook Thunder squads as rivals Not only are the Oklahoma City Thunder battling the Indiana Pacers for an NBA championship, they're also battling the ghost of the previous iteration for the love and affection of the active fanbase. After Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder to a 123-107 Game 2 win to even the 2025 NBA Finals at 1-1, they've already tallied the same amount of championship series wins as Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden had in their entire tenures. The improbable has happened again. The Thunder built up a title contender that skyrocketed past several tiers to the top. They're on the doorstep of a championship. Suppose Gilgeous-Alexander can bring home the Larry O'Brien trophy. In that case, he'll have a serious argument for best player in franchise history, despite longevity favoring the other two popular candidates, Durant and Westbrook. Despite the constant comparisons, Jalen Williams refuses to see some of his idols as rivals. The 24-year-old has said several times how much he looked up to Westbrook. He doesn't think they need to worry about their all-time place in franchise lore, considering how new they are in their NBA careers. "It doesn't really do too much for me except for the fact that it's just cool. Growing up, what was I, probably like 12 when they were playing, around there," Williams said. "To go from watching them reach that point and then to end up being on the team that's in the same position as them, it's more of like a blessing and a dream come true." It probably helps to see that most of the fanbase sides with the current group. That was put to the test when Russell Westbrook's Denver Nuggets were the Thunder's Round 2 matchup. The series went the full seven games. In Game 1, Westbrook received a standing ovation. After that though, he was rained down in boo's. "I just played Russell Westbrook in the playoffs, and obviously, he's a cornerstone of this organization. I just try to take those little things that come with it, be really happy and thankful for it," Williams said. "It doesn't really add any pressure or any kind of motivation. It's just really cool that I get to be in this position. All Williams needs to be seen in that same regard is time. The Thunder are in the infancy stages of a championship window. They could win the whole thing in just the second year of it. If the 24-year-old is the second-best player on a title window, he'll forever be cemented in OKC history.

Russell Westbrook Could Receive Historic Offer From EuroLeague Team
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. This NBA offseason is shaping up to be one of the most exciting yet — potentially packed with record-breaking action and plenty of movement. For the seventh straight season, the league will see a different champion crowned, marking the longest such streak in NBA history. More NBA news: Hall of Famer Don Nelson to Wear Luka Doncic Shoes in Protest of Mavericks Trade That kind of parity has given nearly every team a sense of hope heading into next season. With belief spreading across the league, expect a flurry of blockbuster moves and major roster shakeups as teams look to capitalize on what feels like a wide-open championship window. NBA commissioner Adam Silver is certainly getting what he wants, and while many are opposed to it, a great deal can change in the coming months. Nonetheless, a ton of players will be on the move, and one name that could fall under that category is former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook. Not only will NBA teams have their eye on Westbrook, but so will EuroLeague powerhouse Hapoel Tel Aviv. According to European basketball reporter, Nemanja Zoric, Hapoel Tel Aviv is set to make Westbrook an offer "never before seen in European basketball." More Photo byEuroCup Champions Hapoel Tel Aviv are expected to make Russell Westbrook an offer 'never before seen in European basketball' 👀 (via @zoric_nemanja) — Legion Hoops (@LegionHoops) June 4, 2025 Fresh off capturing the EuroCup title, the Israeli club is aiming high as it gears up for its first appearance in Europe's top-tier competition — and they've reportedly set their sights on the 2017 NBA MVP. While the chances of Westbrook leaving the NBA remain slim, Hapoel Tel Aviv could try to change the conversation by making a serious push. Westbrook holds a $3.4 million player option for next season, and after putting together a solid campaign, there's a chance he bets on himself and tests the market. The nine-time All-Star is coming off a solid season, as he averaged 13.3 points per game, 4.9 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 44.9 percent from the field and 32.3 percent from three in 75 games in his first season with the Denver Nuggets. Westbrook is clearly not the same player he was with the Oklahoma City Thunder; nevertheless, he does the little things at times that contribute to winning basketball. We saw that last season with the Nuggets at times, and we'll see if another team gives him a fair shot. The former UCLA product has just completed his 17th season in the league, having played in 1,237 games. Westbrook is undoubtedly on his way to Springfield when all is said and done.
