Vance Boelter: What we know about alleged Minnesota assassin's ties to Middle East and Africa
Minnesota shooter Vance Luther Boelter's online biographies show that he runs a security company and has ties to the Middle East and Africa. On LinkedIn, Boelter lists himself as the CEO of the Red Lion Group, based in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Boelter is on the loose and is being sought in connection to several shootings, including that of Sen. John Hoffman and his wife in their Champlin home early Saturday, June 14, leaving them seriously injured. He then went to former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortmon's house, where he allegedly killed her and her husband, police sources told the New York Post.
Besides his association with the Red Lion Group, Boelter claimed to have worked with Minnesota Africans United too, an organization known for working with African immigrants in the state, according to a now-deleted biography on the group's website. However, Minnesota Africans United told the New York Post that they never hired, paid, or contracted Boetler, and that he never served in the organization, neither in an official nor an unofficial capacity.
Boelter and his wife, Jenny, appear to head Praetorian Guard Security Services, a Minnesota-based company 'here to set up security options and provide security services right to your doorstep and property to keep what you own safe and secure,' per its website. According to the website, Boelter has 'been involved in security situations' in Eastern Europe, Africa, North America and the Middle East, 'including the West Bank, Southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.'
Meanwhile, a video surfacing on Facebook shows Boelter speaking at a seminar held jointly by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Minnesota Africans United and Global Minnesota. One video on Facebook shows Boelter participating as a keynote speaker in his capacity as CEO of Red Lion Group for the seminar in 2022. He conducted the call from Moanda, Democratic Republic of the Congo and spoke of the Red Lion Group's ventures in the African nation.

Minnesota shooter Vance Boelter's best friend David Carlson opened up about the former on Saturday, just hours after he shot dead Rep Melissa Hortman and her husband, and also shot at Sen John Hoffman and his wife. The 59-year-old had also received a chilling text message from Boelter before the shooting, wherein he told Carlson and another friend that he might be dead shortly, adding that he loved them both. Carlson reportedly called authorities soon after receiving that text message as he feared that his best friend might have harmed himself. He expressed shock over the possibility that Boelter, whom he has been friends with since fourth grade, could be involved in such a heinous crime. "He wasn't a hateful person. But he needed help," Carlson was quoted as saying by the New York Post. According to CNN, Carlson said that Boelter was going through financial problems and was struggling to find work. "He was looking around, but maybe things didn't work out and he just gave up and decided to go out in a blaze of glory," he said, adding that he has no idea what his friend was thinking. Carlson also revealed that Boelter, despite having been a political appointee of Minnesota's Democratic Governor Tim Walz, voted for Republican leader, President Donald Trump. However, he went on to say that he was not aware of his current feelings on state politics. According to the best friend, while Boelter was against abortion, he wasn't opposed to it in such a manner that could have motivated him to kill. At the time of the incident, Boelter was allegedly dressed as a police officer and driving a fake police cruiser. He shot legislators Hortman and Hoffman, and their spouses, at their homes. However, the suspect left behind a target list with more than 70 names, including names of top Democrats like Gov Tim Walz, Rep. Ilhan Omar, and Sen. Tina Smith. Soon after the shootings, the FBI identified Vance Luther Boelter as the suspect in the 'targeted' shootings of the Minnesota lawmakers. Considering that Boelter is armed and dangerous, the FBI posted a $50,000 reward for information that leads to his arrest. Additionally, the shooter also had links to a private security firm that owned vehicles resembling police cruisers. Boelter also had no felony record in the state, and was named in just some minor traffic violations.

Minnesota, US: The shooter who killed Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, left behind a manifesto targeting pro-choice Democratic lawmakers. The suspect, identified as 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, also injured State Senator John Hoffman and his wife in a separate attack. He remains at large as authorities intensify a statewide manhunt. Boelter, who was impersonating a police officer, used a fake police vehicle with flashing lights to gain access to the victims' homes early Saturday morning. The manifesto, recovered from his vehicle, listed prominent Democratic leaders who support pro-choice policies. They also found handwritten papers marked "No Kings," pointing to possible anti-government or anti-establishment motives. "When we did a search of the vehicle, there was a manifesto that identified many lawmakers and other officials," Brooklyn Park police chief Mark Bruley said, as per AP. Ms Hortman, 55, was pronounced dead at home, while her husband, Mark Hortman, 58, later died at North Memorial Hospital. Following the shootings, a shelter-in-place alert was issued for a 3-mile radius near Edinburgh Golf Course. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz confirmed the deaths in a press briefing, describing the incident as a "coordinated and targeted attack on elected officials." He urged residents to stay away from all political rallies until the suspect is apprehended. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner confirmed that both Hortmans died from multiple gunshot wounds. Brooklyn Park Police are leading the investigation, supported by the FBI and the State Emergency Operations Center, which has been activated in response. Vance Boelter, a former appointee to Minnesota's bipartisan workforce development board under Governors Mark Dayton and Tim Walz, served until his term expired in 2023.
