Pune: The National Green Tribunal (
NGT
) has issued notices to the state forest and tourism departments seeking clarification whether the current guidelines governing the
Firefly Festival
(Kajwa Mahotsav) held annually between May and June were being properly implemented and were these enough to prevent ecological harm.
The directives came after a petition was filed by environmentalist Ganesh Borhade. He urged the tribunal to direct the authorities to frame comprehensive and detailed guidelines for protection and conservation of fireflies, particularly within the
Kalsubai wildlife sanctuary

Borhade said the sanctuary experiences significant ecological disturbances during the festival because of unregulated tourism. He said artificial lighting from flashlights, mobile phones and vehicle headlights interferes with the natural mating behaviour of fireflies and is contributing to a significant decline in their population.

"Fireflies rely on bioluminescent signals for reproduction and increased light pollution during the festival negatively impacts their reproductive success," he said in his petition.
Ambrish More had started the festival in 2012 around Arthur Lake and Bhandardara dam in Ahilyanagar district. He said, "I never expected the situation to become this bad when I first started to take tourists to see fireflies. Looking at the current situation, I often feel I made a mistake by exposing the spot to tourists and I may not be able to forgive myself for it."
More further said the firefly population will vanish entirely from the region if authorities fail to restrict tourist activities in the area. "There is an urgent need to stop the festival for the next two to three years, at least. If authorities fail to act, I will personally send a legal notice to the forest department on the matter," he added.
The festival started in Ahilyanagar and Nashik districts initially. Now it is also celebrated in other places like Bhimashankar, Malshej Ghat and Rajmachi in Pune and Radhanagri in Kolhapur district.
Activists said tour operators set up tents and tourists often play loud music which adversely impacts the wildlife.
Professional trekker Vinayak Wadekar, who has been visiting the areas for over two decades, observed a worrying trend. "The firefly population has dropped by nearly 20% to 30% in just the last few years as based on my experience," he said.
Wadekar further said lack of management leads to heavy congestion in the area troubling local residents as tourists park their vehicles on the road blocking movement of other vehicles completely.
Borhade said private operators are permitted by the forest department to set up tents and camping facilities within the eco-sensitive zone. He further said local forest officials issued a set of guidelines last year, but it proved inadequate to manage the situation — with most not being followed by tourists.
Meanwhile, the NGT bench has directed the state forest and tourism departments to submit their affidavits within four weeks.

Adani plans projects worth 17,500cr to expand CSMIA's capacity by '29

New Delhi: The Adani group has identified a string of projects — well over 310 that will require a capex of about Rs 17,500 crore by March 2029 — to augment the annual passenger handling capacity of Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to 6.5 crore passengers annually (CPA). The projects include building a bigger Terminal 1 in place of the existing terminal, expanding Terminal 2's capacity from 4 CPA to 4.5 CPA and increasing the hourly flight handling capacity to over 52. By 2029-30, the combined capacity of CSMIA and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is expected to touch 11.5 CPA, to "cater to the growing demands of Mumbai region and Mumbai Metropolitan Region", shows an order issued by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) recently. Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) "has proposed extending existing taxiway M to link it with the physical beginning of runway 27, including the construction of a bridge over Mithi river. The proposed Taxiway M extension will create an additional holding area for aircraft.… It will be designed for Code F aircraft (that include Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A380)," the order states. The hub had handled its highest ever passenger number of almost 5.5 crore in CY 2024. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esta nueva alarma con cámara es casi regalada en Campo Lope Seco (ver precio) Verisure Since last Feb, CSMIA which has a set of cross runways — making it essentially a single runway airport — is handling upto 44 flights (down from earlier 46) during "high intensity runway operations" (HIRO) periods from 8-11am and 5-8pm. And upto 42 aircraft movement per hour (down from earlier 44) during non-HIRO period. This is now set to get a big bost in the next 3-4 years. "Some of such projects identified for implementation for enabling the airport to cater to 6.5 CPA capacity are: Reconstruction of TI to enhance the capacity from 1.5 CPA to 2 CPA. Terminal 2 northwest pier (check-in facilities, construction of bus boarding Gates (V3) T2 expansion to enhance the capacity to 4.5 CPA. Additional aircraft parking stands in the southern side of runway 09-27," states the AERA order. The other steps include construction of parking stand, constructing an airside tunnel, and an eastern taxiway parallel to runway 14-32. AERA had asked MIAL to engage UK-based National Air Traffic Services (NATS) "to provide an independent high-level review of the infrastructure and forecast demand contained in CSMIA master plan. NATS has done a study and has confirmed the peak hour theoretical capacity of 55 ATMs (aircraft movement) based on its analysis benchmarking with other busy single runway airports like Gatwick but in respect to taxiway infrastructure, it has stated that the 'master plan changes appear to offer significant benefits, but they require more detailed assessment to confirm'. The phasing of the taxiway infrastructure changes should be reviewed to ensure that sufficient capacity is provided as demand grows," the order shows. MIAL has proposed a capex of Rs 17,440 crore in the fourth control period, that is upto March 31, 2029, on the capacity augmentation at CSMIA through the various identified projects related to key areas including airside improvement and passenger terminals. T1 is proposed to be reconstructed at a cost of Rs 3,130 crore by Sept 2028. T2 expansion is projected to cost Rs 142 crore and be over by March 2027. The air traffic control technical block is projected to cost Rs 185 crore and be done by March 2027.

Chariot built in city to be pulled during Rath Yatra in Ireland

1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: A specially crafted chariot built in Bhubaneswar will be pulled during the Rath Yatra in Dublin and Cork this year, after being assembled in Ireland. Components of the chariot, which is 12-ft high and 8-ft wide, and decor, weighing 1,322 kg, completed a 9,000-km journey over 4 months, from Bhubaneswar to Delhi, then to a Gujarat port to Rotterdam, and finally to Dublin by road. The chariot was assembled at Vedic Hindu Cultural Centre Ireland (VHCCI), Dublin, where it remains stored following a successful road test. The chariot has been built by Basudev Maharana, a carpenter from Old Town area along with his two associates. "Getting a skilled carpenter capable of constructing a portable and cost-effective rath proved difficult and required months of searching. Eventually we selected Basudev Maharana, who completed the work in July last year," said Amit Misra, a member of Odia Samaj. Odisha craftspersons created custom-made cloth, horses and wheel components. Maharana used sal wood for its water-resistant properties and longevity. "On Akshaya Tritiya, we worshipped the wood as per our tradition and started work," said Maharana. The logistics presented significant challenges, particularly transporting the consignment of chariot parts, covers and décor to Dublin. The total expenditure, including construction, transport, customs and handling, amounted to Rs 10 lakh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Что о вас может рассказать поза во время сна? "As Lord Jagannath's devotees, we maintain the traditions and custom. The chariot and Rath Yatra celebration following complete rituals as practised in Puri, demonstrates our gratitude, love and dedication to Lord Jagannath, who governs our hearts and minds," said Misra.
