A Boeing 787 Dreamliner operated by Air India, one of its home country's largest airlines, crashed moments after take-off on Thursday on a flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, killing at least 30.
Here are the facts about the airline's long history:
FOUNDED IN 1932
Air India was started by entrepreneur JRD Tata in 1932, before being taken over by the Indian government in 1953. Under the government, years of mismanagement and rising competition led to ballooning debts at the carrier.
Tata Group took over the airline's operations in a $2.2 billion deal in 2022, and has since tried to revive its fortunes.
FLEET, ROUTES
Air India currently flies to 43 domestic and 41 international destinations. As of May, it operates 191 aircraft, a mix of narrow- and wide-body models from both Airbus and Boeing.
It is currently the country's only airline to fly non-stop to long-haul destinations, from Australia to Europe and North America.
Its low-cost unit, Air India Express, flies to 55 destinations in India and abroad, with a focus on the Middle East.
Tata Group merged Air India and Air India Express with its existing carriers Vistara and AIX Connect in November to form India's largest airline group after IndiGo.
Air India has merged with Vistara, while Air India Express combined with AIX Connect. The airlines command a roughly 30% share of India's domestic aviation market.
Singapore Airlines, which started full-service carrier Vistara with the Tatas, is a 25% owner of the combined Air India Group.
Air India placed what was then the world's largest aircraft order for a combined 470 jets from Airbus and Boeing in February 2023.
This was topped up with an order for another 100 jets from Airbus in December last year.
Air India is in talks with Airbus and Boeing for a major new aircraft deal including some 200 extra single-aisle planes, Reuters reported earlier in June.
The company in mid-2023 unveiled a new logo, branding and plane livery.
It also embarked on a $400 million refurbishment and retrofitting plan of its aircraft interiors, which has been dogged by supply chain delays. The carrier has retrofitted most of its single aisle Airbus A320 neo aircraft and is working on updating its long-haul Boeing 777 and 787 jets.

Ensure no claim denied or delayed, IRDAI to insurers on Air India crash
Insurance regulator IRDAI has advised insurers in the wake of the Air India plane crash to ensure no claim pertaining to those who died is either denied or delayed on account of procedural formalities. 'Ensure no claim is denied or delayed... in the case of confirmed deceased individuals from the passenger list and persons at the affected buildings of the crash area,' the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India said in a circular to all insurers, reinsurers, Life Insurance Council and General Insurance Council. It asked the councils to set up a dedicated joint cell at the hospital where those injured after the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into BJ Medical College hostel and other buildings were getting treatment. This will help provide information to insurers immediately in respect of the claims or any other assistance required for any of their health/life insurance policies. The London bound Air India Flight 171 had crashed on Thursday minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad resulting in the death of 241 out of 242 people, including 12 crew members, on board. There were also casualties in the neighbourhood following the crash. Describing it as a moment that calls for compassion, responsiveness and utmost efficiency in supporting affected families, IRDAI wanted all insurers to act immediately as the passenger list has already been released. Since medical insurance cover for overseas travel is mandatory, it wanted them to obtain an authenticated list of the passengers as well as insurance policy details of those affected in the vicinity of the crash area. Verify details in the respective data base of the insurers with regard to the overseas medical insurance policies, personal accident policies and life insurance policies and initiate fast-track processes for claim settlement,' the regulator said. It wanted insurers to waive requirements such as first information report (FIR) or post-mortem reports where official confirmation from authorities concerned are available. It also wanted them to note the claim settlement to the nominee as recorded in the policy. IRDAI also advised the insurers to nominate a nodal officer at senior level to co-ordinate with the joint cell for speedy settlement of claims. Starting June 16, the insurers should submit a report on weekly basis for a month. The Councils should publish insurer-wise summary level claims settlement data, it said.

Air India To Provide Rs 25 Lakh Interim Payment To Crash Victims' Famillies
Mumbai: Air India on Saturday announced that it will provide an interim payment of Rs 25 lakh to the families of the deceased and survivors of the Ahmedabad plane crash. This interim payment is in addition to the Rs 1 crore compensation already announced by the parent company, Tata Sons, Air India said in a statement. Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner carrying 242 passengers, including 12 crew members, crashed in the Meghaninangar area shortly after takeoff from the Ahmedabad International Airport on Thursday afternoon, killing 270 persons, including 241 passengers on board. "To provide immediate financial support, Air India will be making an interim payment of Rs 25 lakh or approximately 21,000 British pounds to each of the families of the deceased and also to the survivors," Air India CEO and managing Director Campbell Wilson said in a video message. This, he said, is in addition to the Rs 1 crore or approximately 85,000 British Pounds already committed by Tata Sons. On Thursday, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran had announced that the Group will provide Rs 1 crore to the families of each person who has lost their life in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. Campbell Wilson said that over 200 trained caregivers are now in place, adding "with each family assigned dedicated assistance along with access to counseling and other services." The process of reuniting next of kin with their loved ones and personal effects has begun."Our teams are working closely with the families and authorities to help the reunification process," Air India chief said. He said that Air India is also in the process of completing precautionary safety checks on Boeing 787 aircraft, as directed by the DGCA. "We will complete all checks within the timelines prescribed by the regulator. This has been confirmed by the authorities," he stated. He also said that the aircraft's data recorder has been recovered, which will form part of the official investigation, adding that Air India continues to "fully cooperate" with these investigations.
