Victim video call service boosts arrests, Dorset Police says
A police force has said an initiative to allow victims of crime to speak to officers via video is delivering quicker arrests.Dorset Police said the rate of positive outcomes, such as charges and cautions, had also increased.Since a trial in Dorset in July 2023, more than 11,000 people have requested to use Enhanced Video Response (EVR), the force said.Optional video interviews - often called Rapid Video Response (RVR) - have been introduced for people such as victims of domestic abuse, who may not want officers or marked police cars at their home.
Dorset's scheme was formally launched in July 2024 and is chosen by about 165 crime victims a week, the force said.Ch Supt Stewart Gates said: "So far, incidents that have been dealt with by our EVR team have resulted in an arrest or formal suspect interview almost four times higher than elsewhere in the force."Investigations leading to a positive outcome, such as an offender being charged or given a caution, [are] more than three times higher."Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said because of EVR "responses to the highest-grade emergency calls are improving".He said the service delivered "increased efficiency, better use of officer time and a reduction in vehicle costs, as well as fuel and maintenance".The commissioner added: "These savings are then being invested back into the frontline, helping to reduce response times to emergency calls requiring immediate or urgent in-person attendance."The force said it currently responded to 80% of the most urgent emergencies within 20 minutes.

Brisbane teacher is charged after allegedly grooming multiple children
A teacher has been denied bail following accusations he groomed multiple children. Jayden Robert Carey, 30, was charged with 25 offences against children this week after Queensland Police allegedly discovered incriminating images on his devices. Carey was dismissed from his job teaching in Brisbane after he was charged with soliciting photos from several children in Tasmania and transferring them money. He fronted Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday for his bail application and the court heard Carey allegedly identified 'all the children' he is accused of abusing in a recorded police interview. Acting Magistrate Nigel Rees claimed there was strong evidence against Carey. 'He was in a position of trust and a position of authority and he's taken advantage of that,' Mr Rees said, the Courier Mail reported. Legal aid duty lawyer Lana Millar argued strict bail conditions would mitigate any risk Carey posed to the community. Among the suggested conditions was having no contact with children. Ms Millar added her client had no prior criminal history. Mr Rees determined the allegations against Carey were 'very serious' and denied his bail application. The matter was adjourned for mention on July 14. Carey is facing six counts of grooming children under 16 by facilitating procurement of a child to engage in a sexual act, and three counts of grooming children under 12 by facilitating procurement of a child to engage in a sexual act (child or fictitious). He is also accused of nine counts of using the internet to procure children under 16, three counts of using the internet to procure children under 12, and one count each of possessing child exploitation material, using a carriage service to solicit child abuse material, attempting to use a carriage service to solicit child abuse material, and possessing tainted property.

Electric bike, pedestrian and car collision leaves teen dead and another seriously injured
A collision between an electric bike, a pedestrian and a car has left a teenager dead and another in hospital with serious injuries. Emergency services responded shortly after 4.50pm on Wednesday to reports of an accident on Staniforth Road in the Darnall area of Sheffield. A 16-year-old pedestrian was taken to hospital. Despite emergency treatment, he died as a result of his injuries. The boy's family has been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. An 18-year-old man, who was the rider of the electric bike, is also in hospital with serious injuries. It is reported that the car involved, a grey Audi, failed to stop at the scene. Police say an investigation into the collision is underway and a man and woman in their forties have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. They remain in custody. Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles said: "We know that this incident will have caused significant concern in the local community, and tonight our thoughts are with the boys loved ones following this tragic incident. "Our investigation into what happened is continuing at pace and we currently have a scene in place on Staniforth Road as we continue to piece together the circumstances. "We are aware of speculation being shared online, as well as footage of the incident, and we ask members of the public to withhold from speculating or sharing footage which may cause distress to the boy's family. "If you have any footage, imagery or information that may assist our investigation then please share this with us - it may form an important part of our investigation."

Missing teenager Pheobe Bishop's housemate has been released without charge after hours of questioning. Pheobe was last seen on May 15 leaving a rundown home in Gin Gin, near Bundaberg, where she had been living with couple Tanika Kristan Bromley and James Wood. Queensland Police say the pair told detectives they drove Pheobe to Bundaberg Airport for an 8.30am flight to Brisbane and then on to Perth, where she planned to meet up with her boyfriend. Pheobe failed to board and neither she nor her luggage have been seen since, with police revealing her neither her phone or bank accounts have been accessed. Her housemate, James Wood was taken into custody in Bundaberg on Wednesday. Police secured his car on Bolewski Street, in Bundaberg, before taking him into custody. Wood had been living in his car in the area since the Gin Gin property was declared a crime scene while Bromley has been staying with family on the outskirts of town. Police questioned the 34-year-old in connection with Pheobe's disappearance Queensland Police confirmed on Thursday he has been released. 'Detectives are continuing to run through several lines of enquiry as investigations continue, and will conduct physical searches when required,' a spokesperson said. 'Police are continuing to appeal for any information about Pheobe's whereabouts.'
