Cubs place LHP Shoto Imanaga (hamstring strain) on 15-day IL

Reuters05-05-2025

May 5 - Chicago Cubs left-hander Shoto Imanaga was placed on the 15-day injured list with a strained left hamstring on Monday.
The Cubs are without Imanaga and a second top starter -- Justin Steele -- as they begin a three-game home series with the San Francisco Giants on Monday.
Because of an off day Thursday, the Cubs could skip Imanaga's turn in the rotation.
In eight starts this season, Imanaga (3-2) has posted a 2.82 ERA with 34 strikeouts and 14 walks in 44 2/3 innings. He was the Cubs' lone All-Star last season as a rookie and started on Opening Day 2025 in the Tokyo Series against the Dodgers.
Imanaga was injured in the sixth inning of a scoreless pitcher's duel Sunday with the Brewers and Freddy Peralta when he reached for the back of his left leg in pain.
Imanaga also left his previous start Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the sixth inning with leg cramps.
Right-hander Gavin Hollowell joined the Cubs on Monday from Triple-A Iowa and is expected to work out of the bullpen.
Steele was placed on the 15-day injured list with left elbow tendonitis on April 9.

Phillies get by Cubs in 11 to end 5-game skid

June 10 - Brandon Marsh knocked in the winning run in the 11th inning as the host Philadelphia Phillies nipped the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Monday. Otto Kemp recorded the first three hits of his major league career for Philadelphia, which had lost nine of its previous 10 games, including five in a row. Nick Castellanos also had three hits as the Phillies handed Chicago its fourth loss in six games. The Cubs went ahead 3-2 against Carlos Hernandez (1-0) in the 11th as Pete Crow-Armstrong lined an RBI double off the right field wall. However, the Phillies promptly tied it -- and then won it -- in the bottom half against Danny Palencia (0-2). J.T. Realmuto began that frame with a lined single to right, tying the score at 3-3. The next two batters, Bryson Stott and Kemp, both reached on perfectly executed bunts, loading the bases. Marsh followed with a blast off the base of the wall in left-center field, sending his teammates storming out of the dugout. Chicago jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Kyle Tucker, the second batter of the game, sent Zack Wheeler's 1-2 fastball deep into the right field seats. Philadelphia drew even in the fourth on Realmuto's run-scoring groundout. Wheeler silenced the Cubs in the top of the fifth, giving the Phillies a chance to move in front in the bottom half. Kemp began the rally with a leadoff single to left-center for his first career hit. He advanced two bases on an errant pickoff throw by Matthew Boyd and then scored on Weston Wilson's flare into right. The score remained 2-1 until Ian Happ launched a game-tying homer off Matt Strahm with one out in the eighth. Wheeler allowed one run and three hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out seven. Boyd was charged with two runs -- one earned -- and eight hits in six frames. He walked two and did not strike out a batter. --Field Level Media

MLB star brutally ejected for this eight-word comment to home plate umpire... but was the decision too harsh?

Chicago Cubs star Nico Hoerner was on the end of a brutal ejection that has left many fans claiming he was harshly treated by the home plate umpire. Hoerner was at the plate on Sunday as the Cubs took on the Detroit Tigers on the road, but his afternoon came to an early end when he was judged to have taken his comments a step too far with the ump Derek Thomas. Marquee Sports Network's TV cameras have now revealed the full conversation between the player and umpire... so do you think the infielder was harshly treated? In the clip, the umpire can be seen calling a strike against Hoerner, before the batter turns to him and says: 'You're having a really bad day so far.' Immediately, he is tossed from the game, before questioning: 'I just said, "you're having a really bad day so far"?' He is then joined by his manager Craig Counsell, who defends his player by claiming: 'What are you doing? That's nothing. You've got to be kidding me!' After the game, Hoerner faced the media and said: 'Yeah I don't think it's really that often that you can verbatim say to the press afterwards what got you thrown out. 'I said, "you're having a really bad day"...' He then followed his comments with a long pause, while reporters can be heard laughing in the background. The Cubs went on to lose the game 4-0 in Detroit, with Hoerner going 0-2 in his two ABs. Here is the audio from Nico Hoerner's ejection during today's game. — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) June 8, 2025 On social media, fans were split by the decision to eject the shortstop from the game, with one backing the umpire to write: 'Been a rule forever in the game, never start a conversation with an umpire with "You're". Doesn't matter what comes after it.' Elsewhere, though, others called the decision 'soft', with one adding: 'That ump is such a cry baby.' A third wrote: 'Unacceptably soft on a terrible call that changed the outcome of a game. Get him out of here.'
