Tales of people taking advantage of their friends when it comes to borrowing money are all too familiar, but what makes this case stand out is the eye-watering amount involved – $500,000.
This saga of betrayal began, as so many do, with a sob story: A corporate consultant (we shall call her Nancy) saw her business partner (Susan) seemingly sad and distressed at the office one night.

Ukrainian forces attack oil depot in Russia's Rostov region

Ukrainian forces on Monday attacked and set ablaze an oil depot in Russia's southern Rostov region used to supply Russian forces in occupied parts of Ukraine, the Ukrainian military said. The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces said the military's special operations units, in conjunction with rocket forces and artillery, had hit the Atlas plant in the Rostov region, not far from Ukraine's eastern border. "A strike by our forces in the area of the target has been confirmed," the General Staff said in a statement on Telegram. "A fire has been observed. The results of the strike are being clarified." The statement said the facility was used to provide fuel and lubricants to Russian units operating in Russian-occupied parts of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions on the war's eastern front. Ukrainian forces have been engaged in cross-border attacks, including energy industry targets, which the General Staff said was aimed at curbing Russia's economic potential to proceed with the more than three-year-old war in Ukraine. Ukrainian military bloggers had earlier reported on the raid on the oil depot, saying fuel tanks had been engulfed in a blaze in the incident. Seven Iranians appear in UK court charged with assault after embassy incident

REUTERS/Isabel Infantes/File photo Seven Iranians appear in UK court charged with assault after embassy incident LONDON - Seven Iranian nationals appeared in a British court on Monday accused of attacking a pro-Tehran demonstrator near the Iranian embassy in London last week. The seven men, aged between 30 and 50, are charged with intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to one person outside the Iranian embassy on Friday. Their lawyers told Westminster Magistrates' Court that the seven defendants were opponents of the Iranian government and had been threatened before the incident. Prosecutor Rachel Hughes said: "The defendants were protesting outside of the Iranian embassy against the current Iranian regime as part of a pro-royalist protest, in which they had placed the Iranian flag on the ground. "The victim knelt and kissed that flag before running off with it. All the defendants chased after the victim and participated in an attack over a six-minute period." Hughes said the complainant remains in hospital with serious injuries including broken ribs, a broken ankle and a suspected bleed on the brain. Judge Daniel Sternberg denied the seven defendants bail ahead of their next court appearance at Southwark Crown Court on July 21. Monday's court hearing comes amid heightened conflict in the Middle East and after the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites on Saturday. The last heir to the Iranian monarchy – whose father, the U.S.-backed shah, was overthrown in the 1979 Islamic Revolution – on Monday urged Western states to accept the collapse of the Iranian government was necessary to deliver peace and stability. Ukraine deputy PM named a suspect in corruption investigation

KYIV - Ukraine's anti-corruption authorities suspect a sitting deputy prime minister of receiving a $345,000 kickback, they said on Monday, the latest investigation into a high-level Ukrainian official over graft. Kyiv has stepped up its efforts to crack down on corruption as it seeks membership in the European Union while also fending off Russian forces in the more than three-year-old war. Officials did not name the minister, one of five deputy prime ministers, who they suspect of abusing power by approving the development of state-owned land in a scheme that would have led to a loss for the state of around $24 million. The alleged crime took place while the suspect was serving as a minister of regional development, according to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU). The plan, which allegedly involved five other suspects, was halted when anti-graft officials obtained a court-ordered seizure of the land, NABU said. The EU has made fighting corruption a top prerequisite for Ukraine to join the 27-member bloc, which Kyiv sees as critical to cementing its pro-Western course. The deputy minister is among the highest-ranking officials targeted by anti-corruption authorities. Investigations have also focused on lawmakers and a former deputy head of the presidential administration. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
