Jonty Rhodes joins Lions in Joburg
The Central Gauteng Lions have appointed Jonty Rhodes as their fielding consultant.
The legendary fielder, who represented South Africa in 52 Tests and 245 ODIs from 1992 to 2003, joins a Lions coaching group that includes former Proteas Allan Donald (bowling coach) and Hashim Amla (batting coach) working under ex-Proteas head coach Russell Domingo.
Rhodes has coaching experience in both the IPL (Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants) and SA20 (Durban's Super Giants), as well as at international level (Sri Lanka, Kenya and Sweden).
'With their willingness to keep improving in all areas, it is no surprise that the Lions have had so much success on and off the field in the past five years,' Rhodes said.
'Even with my 16 years of coaching experience in the IPL and SA20, I too, am on a constant journey of growth, and as such, am relishing this opportunity to work with the Lions over the next 12 months, where I can hopefully add value to all levels of cricket in Gauteng.'

Orlando Pirates confirm FOUR pre-season games in Spain!
Orlando Pirates are set to return to what is fast becoming their second home in Spain for pre-season next season. Pirates have spent their last three pre-seasons under former coach Jose Riveiro in Spain and will continue with that pattern. This game represents a pattern after another lower league English side in Plymouth was included last season. Pirates will then play Cyprus champions Pafos just two days later. It remains to be seen if Pirates would've appointed their new coach ahead of this tour to Spain. This publication has recently reported that they're in advanced talks to re-appoint former coach Rulani Mokwena ahead of nexts season. India still on top in first Test despite Brook 50for England
Local hero Harry Brook defied India's attack with a quickfire fifty but wickets at the other end kept the tourists on top in the first Test at Headingley on Sunday. England were 327-5 at lunch on the third day, still 144 runs behind India's first-innings 471, which featured hundreds from captain Shubman Gil, Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal. But Brook, caught off a Jasprit Bumrah no-ball when on nought in Saturday's last over and dropped Sunday by wicketkeeper Pant on 46, was still there on 57 not out. Jamie Smith (29 not out) had so far helped Brook add 51 in 12 overs for the sixth wicket. Brook's innings was the more important following the loss early Sunday of England century-maker Ollie Pope. England resumed on 209-3, 262 runs behind, after Pope had rescued them from the depths of 4-1 with a superb 100 not out after being dropped on 60. Brook got off the mark on his Yorkshire home ground by thrashing the fifth delivery of Sunday's play, from Prasidh Krishna, for four and next ball pulled the paceman for a soaring six. But Krishna then became the first member of India's attack other than outstanding fast bowler Bumrah to take a wicket this match, albeit with a loose delivery. England vice-captain Pope had added just six runs to his score when he tried to cut a short and wide ball from outside off stump only to get a thin edge to Pant. Pope's exit brought in England captain Ben Stokes, whose decision to field first after winning the toss in good batting conditions was criticised by ex-England skipper Michael Vaughan. Brook, meanwhile, treated Bumrah, one of the best bowlers in the world, with disdain when he advanced down the pitch and him through the covers for four. He then dished out similar treatment to Mohammed Siraj. But from around the wicket, fast bowler Siraj induced left-handed batsman Stokes, on 20, into pushing outside off stump at a ball that moved away slightly, with Pant holding a simple catch. Stokes, without a Test century for two years, threw his bat in the air in frustration as he walked off with England 276-5. One danger for Brook wast that he would run out of partners and Shardul Thakur had Smith (nine) given out lbw only for the batsman's review to indicate the ball would have missed leg stump. Wallabies confident but wary of wounded British and Irish Lions
PERTH - Australia coach Joe Schmidt is confident the Wallabies can be competitive against the British and Irish Lions, but he will be wary of a side wounded by defeat to Argentina in a Dublin warm-up. Andy Farrell's squad arrive in Perth on Sunday evening already feeling pressure after a slick Pumas exploited their lack of familiarity and cohesion in a rousing 28-24 victory on Friday. While far from the ideal send-off for a nine-game tour, which includes Tests in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, Farrell has time to fine-tune. He was without the bulk of his Leinster players against Argentina, and his options are a lot stronger now they are involved. "We need to be a lot better than that. And we will. We'll dust ourselves off but that will concentrate the minds," he said. The first Test in Brisbane is not until July 19 after five lead-in games, starting against a Nic White-led Western Force on Saturday before meeting the Queensland Reds four days later. Clashes against the NSW Waratahs, ACT Brumbies and a combined Australia-New Zealand XV will follow. Lions skipper Maro Itoje said the loss to Argentina only served to highlight where they can improve. "We showed glimmers of what we can do. But we did not consistently pile on the pressure. Argentina caught us napping sometimes," he said. "We weren't accurate enough in some areas but when we looked good, we looked good." Schmidt is intimately familiar with the Lions coaching staff, none more so than Farrell who was his right-hand man during a successful stretch as Ireland boss. He will know how much the defeat hurt. "I know a lot of those guys very well ... they'll be well coached, well organised and they have strength in depth," Schmidt said of the Lions, speaking before the Argentina match "They can play in so many different ways, they can be really physical, they can be square and come at you, they can get you on the edges. "We're going to have to be really well prepared." Whether they are sufficiently prepared remains to be seen, with Australia's only warm-up a Test against Fiji on July 6. Schmidt is also conscious that outside of his Brumbies cohort, who featured in the Super Rugby semi-finals, the bulk of his squad have not had a competitive game since late May. He was initially said to be against members of his Test squad playing for their Super Rugby clubs against the Lions, to safeguard against injury, but appears to have relaxed his stance. "One thing we're conscious of is making sure our clubs are competitive," said Schmidt. "Some of these guys haven't played -– it'll be four or five weeks since they'll have played. So to get a game under their belt before they actually come into Wallaby camp may be the most advantageous situation." Schmidt was installed to restore Australia's reputation after they slumped to 10th in the world following a horror 2023 World Cup under Eddie Jones. While credited with bringing stability and a new work ethic, the Wallabies are still only ranked eight and Schmidt's record of six wins and seven defeats is nothing to shout about.
