Another struggling side is now in big trouble
SERIE DECIDER Sampdoria 'no longer relegated from Serie B' with iconic club 'revived' just four days after they were doomed
SAMPDORIA will no longer be automatically relegated from Serie B – just four days after they were doomed to life in Italy's third tier.
The iconic club set European football alight in the late 80s and early 90s, culminating in Serie A glory in 1991.

The same period also saw Sampdoria clinch four Italian Cups and a European Cup Winners' Cup thanks to the prowess of stars like Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Mancini.
But their fortunes have since steadily declined, eventually resulting in a shock relegation to Serie B in 2023.
However, the club has endured even more pain in the lower leagues.
And just four days ago, Sampdoria fans' worst fears were realised as they finished 18th to suffer automatic relegation to Serie C.

Yet in a shock twist, they have now been handed a dramatic lifeline.
Fellow Serie B strugglers Brescia finished 15th this term, just two points ahead of Sampdoria.
But they have now been deducted four points as a penalty for financial issues, sending them to 18th place instead.
It means Sampdoria moved into 17th, and therefore have qualified for a relegation play-off against Salernitana, now in 16th.

Sampdoria take the place of Frosinone, who are the main beneficiaries of Bresca's points deduction and have confirmed their survival with a 15th-place finish.
But it gives Sampdoria a second bite of the cherry, with a two-legged tie now taking place to determine their fate.
Eight of the greatest players to never win the Ballon d'Or despite their incredible careers
It is certainly an ending dramatic enough to match their disastrous season, which has seen four managers enter the dugout.
Italy legend Andrea Pirlo was sacked in August after taking just one point from Sampdoria's opening three games.
Andrea Sottil and Leonardo Semplici were also given their marching orders, while Alberico Evani could now stay should the playoffs go his way.
Sampdoria used an incredible 38 players this season, including five different goalkeepers.
But they will be hoping star players like ex-Liverpool striker Fabio Borini and former England U21s ace Ronaldo Vieira can finally step up to the plate.

Chelsea make final decision on Mike Maignan transfer before Club World Cup

Chelsea have failed to reach an agreement with AC Milan to sign Mike Maignan before the Club World Cup, according to reports. The Premier League club were keen on signing Maignan as an upgrade to their current goalkeeping options. The experienced Frenchman has won the Serie A title with Milan and has just one year left on his deal with the Italian giants. Both clubs have been locked in talks over the past week to try and agree a deal which would allow the 29-year-old to move to Stamford Bridge and play for Enzo Maresca's side in the upcoming Club World Cup. However, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano now reports that a deal will not be agreed before Tuesday's 7pm deadline, with both clubs unable to agree on a valuation for the keeper. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Milan are said to be demanding at least £20m for Maignan, who is keen on a move to Chelsea this summer. However, the Blues are reportedly unwilling to pay more than £12-15m, with Maresca happy with his current options between the sticks. Despite an inconsistent season at times, Robert Sanchez still retains the faith of his head coach, with Filip Jorgensen, Djojrde Petrovic and Mike Penders all set to provide competition during pre-season. One goalkeeper on his way out of Chelsea is Kepa Arrizabalaga, the most expensive shot-stopper in the world now set to join London rivals Arsenal. Chelsea could still pursue a deal for Maignan when the window reopens later in the summer, but may opt to wait until next summer when the Frenchman is expected to leave Milan on a free. Elsewhere, Chelsea remain in talks to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens after their opening bid was rejected by the Bundesliga side. More Trending Personal terms are said to have already been agreed with the winger, but Dortmund want a fee of €50-60m (£42-50m) to part ways with the Englishman. A deal for Gittens is also not expected to be completed before Tuesday's Club World Cup deadline, but the Blues remain keen to complete the deal later in the window. Chelsea have already made three signings this summer following deals for Liam Delap, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Next Brentford manager odds: Bookies reveal favourite to succeed Thomas Frank

The bookies have backed one of Thomas Frank's former coaches at Brentford top succeed his ahead of the Dane's move to Tottenham Hotspur The manager merry-go-round continues as Thomas Frank's imminent exit at Brentford to takeover the helm at Tottenham Hotspur means another Premier League club is looking for a new manager. Brentford will be looking for a new manager for the first time almost seven years after the Dane joined in October 2018 and guided the Bees to promotion to the Premier League after succeeding Dean Smith. The west London club have enjoyed four seasons in the Premier League having secured two top 10 finishes in that time with a relatively smaller budget than most of their competitors around them. The next manager's first task is to maintain the club's consistency as a stable Premier League side but will be keen to grow further as they seek out a first European campaign in the near future. The Bees were close in the 2022/23 season having finished two points behind Aston Villa on the last day of the season - with a superior goal difference too - and again last season before four wins in their last eight meant they missed out by nine points. Many will be surprised with who the bookies have backed as the early favourite to replace the 51-year-old Dane but early indications show the club will be looking to recruit internally. Who is the favourite to replace Thomas Frank? The favourite with the bookmakers to be the next Bees boss is a well established coach, but will be a new name to many Premier League fans. Justin Cochrane, Frank's assistant manager at Brentford, is the bookies favourite with BetVictor pricing the former defender at 4/7 to take up his first managerial role. The 43-year-old, who also had spells in defensive midfield too, played for 12 different clubs over 13 years as a player and capped 14 times for Antigua and Barbuda before retiring to pursue a coaching career. His playing CV included spells at Crewe Alexandra, Rotherham United and Hayes & Yeading United Cochrane has been on the coaching staff with the Brentford first team since July 2022 and took up a second role with the England senior team in February this year. Cochrane had a 13-year playing career in the lower leagues but has stepped up a level after moving into coaching. He worked in the Tottenham academy, coached England up to Under-17 level, then became head of player development and coaching at Manchester United in 2021. Now after his time as Frank's assistant and working with Thomas Tuchel, he is being tipped to take over the top job at Brentford. Mason Greenwood's team-mate makes 'lucky' claim about ex-Man Utd forward

Mason Greenwood's first season with Marseille saw him finish as Ligue 1's joint-top scorer, and team-mate Adrien Rabiot has lauded the ex-Manchester United ace for his valuable impact Former Manchester United starlet Mason Greenwood has been praised by Marseille team-mate Adrien Rabiot. The Frenchman claims Greenwood could have been like Jude Bellingham in regards to stardom. Having emerged from the Red Devils' academy system, Bradford-born Greenwood swiftly made an impression under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and became the club's youngest European goalscorer at the age of just 17. In October 2022, Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coersive behaviour. The UK's Crown Prosecution Service later discontinued these proceedings, and all charges were dropped in 2023. Greenwood was suspended by United after his arrest and was sent out on loan to Getafe that year. A year later, he made the permanent switch to Marseille. In Ligue 1, Greenwood has flourished, scoring 21 goals to tie with PSG's Ballon d'Or contender Ousmane Dembele atop the goal-scoring standings. Though some of his antics haven't gone down well with the club's fan base. His peer in France, Rabiot, has now claimed that Greenwood is an "exceptional" talent, and that he could have had a brand image like revered England and Real Madrid star Bellingham. "Mason is an incredible player," Rabiot told The Athletic."If he hadn't had all of his problems, I think he'd have an image like (Jude) Bellingham. Mason would be the star. "Because he's an exceptional player. He can score with his right foot and his left foot, he has an exceptional shot, and he can dribble. We're very lucky to have him. When he's really focused, he does really great things." Roberto De Zerbi's Marseille finished as distant Ligue 1 runners-up this season and have therefore qualified for the Champions League. Greenwood aided massively in these efforts, though it has been made clear that he has little chance of being named in an England squad again, having made his debut and sole appearance in 2020. Bellingham, the subject of Rabiot's comparison, however, is talismanic for his country at the age of 21, two years younger than former Red Devil Greenwood. Steve McLaren, who endured a short-lived stint at the helm of the Three Lions from 2006 to 2007, has been trying to tempt Greenwood into switching international allegiances to Jamaica, whom he now coaches. As per conditions set by FIFA, players can switch international allegiances if they have not played in more than three competitive matches for a senior national side before turning 21. Greenwood only kitted out once for England, in a 2020 UEFA Nations Legaue match against Iceland, and is therefore eligible to switch to the Reggae Boyz if he pleases. "We are in contact all the time, with him [Greenwood] and his family," admitted Jamaica manager McLaren, who took up his current position in 2024. "I am very confident he only wants to play for Jamaica. It is up to him when he moves forward with that. The ball is in his court."
