Farmers and public urged to think farm safety during summer
Farmers and the general public are being called on to think farm safety during the busy summer months, when tractors and machinery are frequently out on the roads and farms are busy.
Minister of State with responsibility for farm safety, Michael Healy-Rae, has asked farmers and everyone visiting the countryside to be extra vigilant.
Speaking today (Wednesday, May 28), Minister Healy-Rae said: 'The weeks ahead will be a busy time on farms up and down the country. Children are beginning their holidays and many of us will be out and about enjoying the countryside.
'It is important that we are safety conscious over the summer,' he added.
With tractors and large machinery moving on public roads, the minister reminded farmers and contractors to ensure that all precautions are in place to prevent the risk of an incident.
He stressed the importance of contractors and farmers ensuring that measures are in place to address all safety hazards before work begins.
Minister Healy-Rae said: 'Machinery operators driving on public roads need to be conscious of other road users as many may not be aware of the risks posed by farm machinery, particularly on narrow, winding roads.
'The Irish countryside is a wonderful amenity which we should all take advantage of, and I am calling on all road users to be patient and to be aware of farming activities at this time of year, he added.
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is advising farmers to check that there are good lines of sight when accessing public roads from yards and fields.
Warning signs and cones should be used to alert road users of machinery movements. Any debris or soil brought onto a public road by machinery should be removed without delay.
The minister also highlighted the risk posed by livestock and advised that fields with livestock should be avoided and dogs should always be kept on a lead to avoid disturbing livestock or wildlife.
He said: 'By working together to keep everyone safe, our memories of summer can be ones we will look back on fondly.'

Dancing with the Stars judge Karen Byrne has stepped out with her fiance Jake Carter to launch Retro Cannonball. The couple – who got engaged in March – are hoping to raise vital funds for the Jack and Jill Foundation at the annual car event. Retro Cannonball will feature 100 classic cars and free family live entertainment as the convoy travels from Little Island, Cork and then coming up through Tipperary, Offaly, Westmeath, Tyrone and finishing at The Cooley Peninsula in Co Louth. Speaking at the launch, Jake and Karen said: "Family is so important to us both and when we were approached by Jack and Jill to help announce its partnership with RETRO Cannonball, it was a no-brainer. "RETRO Cannonball is such a brilliant event, and a true celebration of rare and classic cars that will thrill the whole family. "We hope that people will be inspired to get out onto the high-roads and by-roads along the route to check out this incredible spectacle. "And most importantly, if they have a few euro to spare, please donate it to Jack and Jill, because you'll be making a meaningful difference for families who so rely on Jack and Jill to keep the show on the road at home." The event is hoping to raise money for the children's charity, to bring awareness to its vital in-home nursing and respite care service, which help over 400 families across Ireland. Cannonball has already raised €1,946,432 for Irish children's charities. The event features cars from the 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s from vintage Mustangs to sleek Corvettes, as well as Lamborghini Diablo, Jaguar E-Type, Ferrari 348 GTS, Mercedes-Benz SL Classics and Porsche 911 Carrera. On Friday June 13, the classic convoy will depart from the Radisson Blu Hotel in Little Island, Cork at 10.30am and then roll through the picturesque landscapes of Cork, Tipperary, Offaly and Westmeath stopping for lunch along the way in Kilshane House in Tipperary followed by a coffee stop in Kinnitty Castle in Offaly and the first overnight stay and finish line at The Sheraton Hotel in Athlone. On day two, the convoy travels through Westmeath and on to Tyrone. Cannonballers will have lunch at Corick House in Tyrone before crossing on the ferry from Greencastle to Greenore. The second overnight stay and overall finish line is coming to the Cooley Peninsula for the first time and takes place at Ballymascanlon House just 20 minutes from Carlingford.

New car registrations fell 8.8% in May but EV sales rise again
New car registrations fell 8.8% last month compared to May 2024, the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) said, though EV sales continue an upward trend. There were 5,832 cars registered in May 2025, compared to 6,398 last year. Registrations year to date are up 2.4% (79,301) on the same period last year (77,461). The most popular selling car in May was the Volkswagen Tiguan. Sales of battery electric vehicles (EVs) were up 5.3% during May, with 1,092 new electric cars registered, compared to 1,037 registrations in May 2024. The most popular EV sold in May was the Hyandai Inster. So far this year, 12,392 new electric cars have been registered, representing a 23.3% increase on the year to date in 2024, when 10,052 electric cars were registered. Elon Musk's Tesla sales were down 60% compared to May 2024, with 91 units sold over the month compared to 237 in May 2024, with sales of the brand's Model Y down over 50%, though sales of its Model 3 are up 43%. Mr Musk's political links to Donald Trump have seen Tesla sales across Europe fall significantly in recent months, though Irish sales had remained robust. Tesla has sold 993 units to date in Ireland this year compared to 1,085 in 2024. Last week, Mr Musk announced he was stepping away from the US Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), which has slashed budgets at several US government agencies. Tesla is the fourth highest EV seller by brand this year, behind Volkswagen, Kia, and Hyandai, and just ahead of Chinese EV maker BYD. The Tesla Model 3 is the third highest selling EV, behind the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Kia EV3. May was the fifth consecutive month that EV sales have increased on 2024, said SIMI director general Brian Cooke, with over 12,300 new electric cars sold so far this year, representing a 23% increase on last year. "While we are now on schedule to reach the interim Climate Action Plan target of 175,000 electric cars by the end of this year, as highlighted by the EPA recently, we need to do more to accelerate the growth in EV sales between now and the end of the decade,' said Mr Cooke. User car imports were up 7.9% (5,949) in May 2025, compared to May 2024 (5,513). Year to date imports are up 7.5% (28,184) on 2024 (26,206). In the new car market share by engine type for 2025, petrol cars remain the new car market leader at 27.6%, followed by hybrid (petrol electric) at 23.09%, diesel at 17.42%, electric at 15.63%, and plug-in electric hybrid at 14.64%.

Top 10 finish for Armstrong and Byrne in Scandinavia
Taking the final top 10 spot in the BAUHAUS Royal Rally of Scandinavia, round three of the European Rally Championship, the Irish pairing of Jon Armstrong/Shane Byrne (Ford Fiesta Rally2) had the satisfaction of knowing that they have the pace, if not the luck, to mount a strong challenge for victory in one of remaining five round of the series. They were third fastest through the Power Stage (final stage) where they annexed three extra championship points. At the finish, the Kesh driver spoke about his final stage performance, where rain made it difficult. "I had a messy run through, a bit of understeer in the first corners. I clipped something in the fast section so I was a bit careful there." "It was a frustrating weekend, we had some good pace." He also took time to reflect on last week's Jim Clark Rally (Scotland) and the Cavan Rally. "We had some tough events last weekend at home, especially James (Williams) and Dai (Roberts, who was fatally injured), also my old co-driver Brian Hoy, who had a bad accident." (Hoy and his driver Garry Jennings were both injured in an accident during the Cavan Rally). Norway's Eyvind Brynildsen was a first-time winner in a round of the series as his Pirelli-shod Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 finished 4.9s in front of the MRF Tyres Toyota GR Yaris of Finland's Roope Korhonen, who snatched the runner-up spot from local hero Isak Reiersen (Skoda Fabia RC Rally2), who was Brynildsen's closest challenger until the final stage. Indeed, the 21-year-old was only 2.8s behind with three stages remaining. Both Reiersen and Brynildsen putting their cars on two wheels on a left-hand corner on SS15. Korhonen tops the overall championship standings. Meanwhile, Tyrone's Jason Mitchell (Skoda Fabia RS Rally2) made it three wins from three outings in the Sligo Pallets Irish Forest Rally Championship, his latest, in Saturday's Mayo Forest Rally, to move into the lead of the eight-round series. He secured a commanding 20.6s victory over the Ford Fiesta Rally2 of Waterford's Andrew Purcell, who fended off the final stage challenge of Tyrone's Niall McGonigle (VW Polo GTi R5) by a mere 0.6s. Despite a few moments, Purcell set the pace on the opening stage where top seed Mitchell was only 0.4s behind with McGonigle a further 1.7s shy of second spot. The majority of the entry received a notional time for SS2 as Mitchell posted the fastest time through SS3 to impose his authority on the event with a 10.6s advantage. Purcell lost time when he clipped a chicane and although McGonigle reckoned he too lost time, he was only 1.7s further behind in third. Tyrone's Stephen Dickson (Ford Fiesta Rally2) was fourth but struggled to get into rhythm. Reigning champion Monaghan's Derek Mackarel lost time when his Ford Fiesta R5 cut out as he approached a chicane on the third stage, he was unhappy with his choice of a hard compound tyre. On the repeat loop, Mitchell was able to manage his lead and with a trio of stage wins, took a fine victory. Purcell just about withstood McGonigle's late surge to claim valuable points to keep his title hopes on track. Dickson, Mackarel and Pete McCullagh (Mitsubishi Lancer E9) completed the top six. Elsewhere, Donegal's Damien Tourish (Ford Escort) in ninth place, was the top two-wheel drive finisher. In the J1000 category, Donegal's James McShea (VW UP) capitalised on the final stage retirement of long-time leader Cavan's Danny Brady, also in a VW UP.
