Concerns grow over potential delay of BusConnects as Limerick hits employment record

Irish Examiner25-04-2025

Concerns have been raised regarding the potential delay of the BusConnects programme in Limerick, as the region has reached 279,000 people in employment — a regional record.
Chief executive of Limerick Chamber Michelle Gallagher said there would be major implications for both employees and business across the city and region if the initial rollout of the plan is delayed past 2025.
Ms Gallagher emphasised the critical importance of expanding and improving public transport infrastructure to support a growing workforce and to ensure Limerick's continued economic development.
'The region has reached almost 279,000 people in employment, a regional record, yet despite this continued growth there is continued failure to adequately address the infrastructure gap within an appropriate timeframe.
"Efficient, reliable, and accessible public transport is not a luxury — it is a necessity for advancing enterprise and access to works," she said.
Increased bus routes and enhanced service frequency are essential to ensuring that our employees can get to work safely and on time, and that businesses can thrive in a connected and sustainable urban environment.
"The recent reports of the delay in rollout of BusConnects is most concerning and the impact will be felt throughout scaling and existing businesses,' she added.
The chamber has continued to voice concerns about the exclusion of Annacotty Business Park from the current BusConnects plan, as the area is home to a 'significant concentration' of employers.
According to Ms Gallagher, its omission from the proposed routes poses a 'substantial threat' to workforce accessibility and business continuity.
'Annacotty Business Park is not peripheral — it is central to Limerick's commercial ecosystem. Its exclusion from the BusConnects plan risks undermining the very objective of the programme, which is to enhance access and mobility for all.
"We have undertaken numerous surveys with employees of the park and our findings outline huge support for a bus route, with 97% of respondents supporting increased public transport to their place of work,' she said.
The chamber has called on the National Transport Authority and relevant stakeholders to 'urgently' prioritise delivery in Limerick.
'We need swift, decisive action to ensure that BusConnects delivers for all areas of the city — not just a select few. Delays and oversights will cost us — in lost productivity, talent retention challenges, and diminished regional competitiveness,' Ms Gallagher said.

Current price cuts are ‘not acceptable' to sheep farmers

The Irish Farmers' Association's (IFA) sheep chair, Adrian Gallagher has said that sheep processing factories have to 'stand a lot stronger' in the marketplace to return higher prices to sheep farmers. According to Gallagher, the sector lost a 94,000 breeding ewes in the past year, and are now at numbers 'not seen' since 2014. He claims that throughput in factories dropped by over 370,000 head in 2024 and is currently back over 160,000 on last year. Gallagher believes this level of decline in sector output has 'serious consequences' for servicing high end customers for sheep meet. 'Factories can and must do more on lamb, hogget and ewe prices, the current cuts are not acceptable and could do serious damage to the long-term viability of the sector, these must be reversed,' Gallagher said. The IFA sheep chair has said that trade in the UK for old season and new season lamb has improved over the past week (June 2025). He outlined that prices have risen by almost 7c/Kg for hoggets, and up to 37c/Kg for lambs. The prices in France remain strong, and are 'well over' €10/Kg. Gallagher said: 'Sheep factories here must start reflecting this reality in prices offered to sheep farmers and reverse the recent cuts they have implemented. 'The sector is a critical stage and its long-term viability and sustainability is very much dependent on the willingness and capacity of factories to maximise returns to farmers. 'Bord Bia also (has) a key role to play in ensuring our product based on the standards implemented on our farms differentiated for customers in the UK and EU markets to push back on the impact cheaper southern hemisphere imports is having in these markets,' Gallagher added. Sheep prices This week's (June 9) sheep trade has seen offers for spring lambs fall below €9.00/kg at all the key sheep factories. Up to 20c/kg has been cut from spring lamb prices, and many of the processors are less interested in hoggets as markets have now moved on to this year's lambs. Procurement staff have told Agriland that there are 'reasonably good numbers of spring lambs' coming available and these lambs are generally all arriving well finished with good carcasses. This week, Kepak is quoting €8.65/kg plus a 15c/kg Quality Assurance (QA) bonus for spring lambs, leaving €8.80/kg on offer here up to 21kg carcass weight. This offer is down 20c/kg since last week.

Heads up Dublin commuters - Leap Card bus fares are changing from next week

NEXT MONDAY, REVISED fares for Dublin's commuter bus services will come into effect under a new Leap zonal fare system. The changes follow similar updates to rail fares introduced in April . The National Transport Authority (NTA) says the new system aims to make fares more 'equitable and easy-to-understand' by basing prices more closely on the straight-line distance between where journeys start and finish. This replaces the previous setup where different operators, like Bus Éireann and Iarnród Éireann, used separate fare zones that didn't always match up. The Leap area is divided into four zones, which will have different fares applied. Transport for Ireland Transport for Ireland In Zone 1, where bus passengers were already eligible to pay with a Leap Card, the 90-minute fare will remain unchanged (€2 for adults, €1 for young adults and students, and €0.65 for Child Leap Cards). Advertisement For Dublin commuter bus services in Zone 1, the fare will be €2.40 for adults and €1.20 for young adults, students and children using Leap Cards. Zone 2 will cover areas including Gormanston, Skerries, Kilcock, Sallins & Naas, Greystones and Kilcoole. The fare will cost €3.70 for a bus to Dublin for adults, and €1.85 for students, young adults and children. Drogheda, Enfield, Newbridge and Wicklow Town will be included in Zone 3, where it will cost adults €5.30 for a bus to the city centre. For students, young adults and children, it will cost €2.65. Zone 4 will be furthest from the city centre, covering areas like Kildare Town and Rathdrum at a cost of €6.30 for adults and €3.15 for students, young adults and children. Fares on services run by Bus Éireann and Go-Ahead Ireland will change from 16 June alongside the change in Leap Card fees – some will go up, some down, and others will stay about the same. Single journey fares have been updated, with Leap Card users getting the best prices compared to cash, according to the National Transport Authority. New daily, weekly, and monthly Leap Card products will also be introduced, covering travel between the zones and within central Dublin on TFI rail, Luas, and city buses. The weekly cap for travel in all four zones for an Adult Leap Card is €67.20. Readers like you are keeping these stories free for everyone... New Zealand Rugby announce new sponsorship deal with Gallagher Insurance

New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has announced a new multi-year sponsorship deal with American company Gallagher Insurance. The deal will see the Gallagher Insurance logo will appear on both the training and match-day shorts of the All Blacks and all international NZ teams. The agreement was revealed at an event at the All Blacks Experience in Auckland. Gallagher's agreement with NZR comes hot on the heels of the exit of previous sponsor Ineos - with whom a settlement was reached two months ago following the termination of their multi-million-a-year deal. The Ineos logo appeared on the training shirt before the petrochemical giant's exit, with Toyota taking over the rights from April. The Japanese manufacturer has now been joined by Gallagher in making up the gap left by Ineos. 'This is a partnership that reflects the scale, ambition and passion for rugby both our organisations have,' said Mark Robinson, CEO of New Zealand Rugby. 'We couldn't be more excited to align with Gallagher Insurance, who already have deep expertise in elite sport, along with a key business focus in New Zealand and globally. "This partnership helps solidify where we're heading, not just with our teams on field, but as a sporting brand off the field too.' Furthermore, Gallagher have also signed All Black and two-time World Rugby Player of the Year Beauden Barrett as one of their global ambassadors. Barrett's role as an ambassador will see him supporting Gallagher's community commitments in New Zealand and around the world. The Illinois company, who will also become the official insurance broker of NZR, will sponsor NZ referees' jerseys across domestic competitions from 2026.
