Zverev survives De Jong drop shot bonanza to advance

PARIS : Third seed Alexander Zverev had to chase down dozens of drop shots from sprightly Dutchman Jesper de Jong before earning a 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-3 victory on Thursday to advance to the French Open third round.
The 28-year-old Zverev, a finalist in Paris last year and looking for his first Grand Slam title, found himself a break down with De Jong, ranked 88th in the world, who initially matched the German's baseline power punch for punch.
De Jong, bidding to become the first Dutch player to record a win over a top-three player on any clay tournament in 25 years, quickly added drop shots to his arsenal to land the first set.
'It wasn't the best set of tennis, the first,' Zverev said in a post-match interview. 'I am still having chances not playing great. Once I found my rhythm, I felt very comfortable.'
'I am happy about my level. He played a fantastic match also. I hope I can continue playing great tennis and we will see what I can achieve.'
At least a semi-finalist in the past four French Opens, Zverev remained composed and twice broke his opponent to bag the second set.
De Jong, however, increased his drop shot rate dramatically – even hitting three on consecutive points in the first game of the third set – to force the tall Zverev out of his comfort zone at the baseline.
The world number three gradually adapted to this play, however, chasing down drop shot number 26 to earn a break point at 2-2 in the third set. He converted it to take control and never looked back.
With De Jong gradually running out of steam and his error count rising sharply, Zverev powered to two more breaks and a 4-0 lead to break his opponent's resistance and he sealed the win when De Jong sank another drop shot into the net.
Zverev will next play the winner of the all-Italian clash between Matteo Arnaldi and Flavio Cobolli.

Reigning champ Alcaraz battles into last 16 at Roland Garros

Four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz arrived as the favourite at Roland Garros. (AP pic) PARIS : Carlos Alcaraz survived a scare to book his place in the French Open last 16 today, with defending women's champion Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka also through to the fourth round at Roland Garros. Second seed Alcaraz won 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 against 69th-ranked Bosnian Damir Dzumhur in the night session to keep his title defence on course. Four-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz arrived as the favourite at Roland Garros after securing the Monte Carlo Masters and Italian Open trophies in the build-up to the clay-court Major. But his fluctuating performances in the past two rounds have given his rivals reason to believe he is vulnerable. 'Today I honestly didn't enjoy it that much. I suffered quite a lot,' said a relieved Alcaraz, who came from a break down in the fourth set to seal victory. 'That's why doing a really good result in a Grand Slam is really difficult because you have to maintain a really high level for three to four hours.' The 22-year-old next meets American 13th seed Ben Shelton who eased past Italian qualifier Matteo Gigante 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. Swiatek kept her bid for a fourth consecutive French Open title on track, coming through 6-2, 7-5 against Romania's world No 60 Jaqueline Cristian in sweltering conditions. Swiatek broke the 60th-ranked Cristian twice in a comfortable first set, but she was pushed a lot harder by her rival in the second and had to save six break points. 'She really stepped up in the second set. I had to step up as well. It was an entertaining match,' said Swiatek, hoping to become the first woman to win four successive Roland Garros titles since Suzanne Lenglen 102 years ago. The 23-year-old Pole will next play 12th seed Elena Rybakina after the Kazakh dispatched 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-2 in a clash of big hitters. Swiatek has a 4-4 record against Rybakina but has lost both previous meetings on clay. However, she was relieved at avoiding Ostapenko, who is 6-0 against her. A grinning Swiatek suggested earlier she had no preference as to her last-16 opponent before asking: 'Am I a good liar?' 'Let's say it doesn't matter, really. Oh, my god. I couldn't play poker,' joked the world No 5 who has not won a title since last year's French Open. Sabalenka produced a dominant display in a 6-2, 6-3 win over 34th-ranked Serbian left-hander Olga Danilovic. But the Madrid Open winner, whose best result at Roland Garros was a semi-final in Paris two years ago, insisted the pressure was on Swiatek. 'Let's just leave it on Iga since she won it, what, three times in a row,' said Sabalenka. The 27-year-old Belarusian next plays 16th-seeded American Amanda Anisimova who ousted Danish 22nd seed Clara Tauson 7-6 , 6-4 in their third round tie. Zheng Qinwen ended the run of Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko 6-3, 6-4. The Chinese eighth seed has now won nine successive matches at Roland Garros following her run to Olympic gold last year. Zheng is through to the fourth round in Paris for the second time and will next play Russian 19th seed Liudmila Samsonova who brushed aside Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska 6-2, 6-3. Italian fourth seed Jasmine Paolini eased past Ukrainian lucky loser Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-4, 6-1. Runner-up last year at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, Paolini next plays Ukrainian 13th seed Elina Svitolina, who dug deep to see off American Bernarda Pera 7-6, 7-6. Eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 against Argentine Mariano Navone as he follows on from his runner-up finish in Monte Carlo and semi-final runs in Madrid and Rome. But the Italian dropped his first set in Paris against world No 97 Navone. 'I've grown up a lot. A match like this I don't know if I would come back a few years ago,' said Musetti. 'The heat was pretty tough to manage. But happy to find a way to turn around the match.' Musetti next plays Holger Rune, who was two points from defeat in the fourth set before rallying past France's Quentin Halys 4-6, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. American Tommy Paul, the 12th seed, got past Russian Karen Khachanov 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 , 3-6, 6-3 and meets Australian Alexei Popyrin, the 25th seed, who beat Portugal's Nuno Borges 6-4, 7-6 , 7-6 . Arthur Fils, the 14th seed, withdrew ahead of his third round match tomorrow, extending the host nation's wait for a first men's champion at Roland Garros since Yannick Noah in 1983.

Reigning men's champion Carlos Alcaraz will look to book his place in the last 16 later today to join Italy's Lorenzo Musetti, Dane Holger Rune and American Ben Shelton, who all reached the fourth round. Swiatek came through despite a very close second set against Romania's world No 60 Jaqueline Cristian, winning 6-2, 7-5 in nearly two hours in sweltering conditions on Court Suzanne Lenglen. Pro-EU centrist Dan sworn in as Romania president

Nicusor Dan has vowed to usher in a 'new chapter' in Romania. (AFP pic) BUCHAREST : Pro-European centrist Nicusor Dan was on Monday sworn in as Romania's president, having pledged to stand against 'isolationism and Russian influence'. A week ago, Dan won a tense election rerun, seen as key for the direction of the Nato and European Union country bordering war-torn Ukraine. Although EU critic and nationalist George Simion easily topped the first round of voting, Dan took victory in the second round run-off. The election came five months after Romania's constitutional court scrapped a presidential ballot over allegations of Russian interference and the massive social media promotion of the far-right frontrunner, who was not allowed to stand again. Dan, 55 and Bucharest mayor since 2020, took the oath of office in parliament. 'The Romanian state needs a fundamental change, within the rule of law, and I invite you to continue to be involved in order to put positive pressure on state institutions to reform,' Dan told the assembly after being sworn in. 'I call on political parties to act in the national interest,' he said. Lawmakers from Simion's far-right AUR party did not participate in the ceremony, saying it was 'legitimising a national treason'. Later on Monday, Dan is to meet interim president Ilie Bolojan – who has been tipped as a possible prime minister. Dan has vowed to usher in a 'new chapter' in Romania. He travelled to Warsaw on Sunday to support pro-EU mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, who hopes to emerge the winner of Sunday's race for the Polish presidency. 'We won the Romanian presidential elections. People rejected isolationism and Russian influence,' Dan told thousands of people at a really for Trzaskowski. 'We will resist' Tensions remained high in Romania, with authorities on alert after hundreds of TikTok users called for protests on Monday. 'We will resist!' Simion, 38, wrote on Facebook on Sunday, although he specified that he would not be protesting on Monday. Romania's constitutional court validated the election results on Thursday, after rejecting an appeal by Simion to annul the vote. Simion has repeatedly alleged that there was foreign interference in the vote, including by France, and electoral fraud, without giving any evidence. He condemned the court's decision as a 'coup d'etat'. Simion comfortably topped the first-round ballot on May 4, campaigning against what he called the EU's 'absurd policies' and vowing to cut aid to Ukraine. But, Dan won almost 54% of the run-off vote. Romania's president has significant sway in foreign policy – including representing the country at Nato and EU summits – and appoints key posts, such as the prime minister. Dan, a mathematics prodigy who has promised to fight corruption for an 'honest' Romania, has said he would speak to all four pro-Western parliamentary parties about 'not only the appointment of the prime minister but also the outline of the government's programme', including judicial reforms. Romania, a country of 19 million people, is struggling with high inflation. It is the EU's most indebted country. Dan, who is known for his reserved nature, has voiced support for Ukraine and vowed to keep Romania on its 'pro-Western' path.
