Nuclear Drama ‘The Deal' Wins Inaugural Series Mania Buyers Upfront
The Deal, a 'timely drama' about last-ditch nuclear talks, has won the inaugural Series Mania Buyers Upfront.
The European co-pro, which is sold by Gaumont, is set in a fictional 2015, with Switzerland hosting last-chance nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran. Swiss diplomat Alexandra Weiss leads the mission, where rising tensions and delegates' hidden agendas threaten fragile diplomacy. The show is a co-pro between Switzerland, France, Luxembourg and Belgium.

The Buyers' Upfront winner was selected from 10 titles, which were curated by Series Mania's artistic team and based on both artistic merit and broad audience appeal. The winner was revealed yesterday at a Beta Film brunch, as the Series Mania forum kicks off in Lille.
Judging The Deal were acquisitions execs from Mediaset, Rai, Movistar Plus+, ZDF and Arte. The Deal came up against the likes of Germany's Dangerous Truth, Escaping Bolivia and Iceland's Fusion in the inaugural award.
'The jury and I were very impressed with the variety of genres and the quality of productions for the titles that were presented this afternoon,' said Katie Keenan, the group director of acquisitions at UK/ROI & Europe for Sky. 'We chose The Deal as the winner as it is a very timely drama given the state of world affairs which adds to its market appeal. Alongside the dynamics of diplomacy and the tension it brings to the drama, there were also human and personal stories that we are certain will unfold,' commented Keenan.

Kylie Minogue apologises to fans after announcing health battle
Kylie Minogue has shared a health update with fans after finishing the UK leg of tour. The Australian singer has been forced to postpone a run of her upcoming European show dates. The 57-year-old who celebrated her birthday last week took to Instagram to share the news about her health battle. She explained: "Hi lovers, As some of you may know, a week ago we finished the UK leg of the Tension Tour. I made it over the finish line but unfortunately have succumbed to a viral infection (Hello laryngitis). "I've tried my best to recover fast to start our next run of shows on Monday but I am afraid it will take me some days to be well enough to get back on stage and perform my best for you." Laryngitis usually comes on suddenly and gets worse during the first three days. Symptoms include a hoarse voice, sometimes losing your voice, an irritating cough, needing to clear your throat and a sore throat. The popstar performed over a dozen shows in the UK, with the last date being in Glasgow on June 6. As well as touring, Kylie has been busy launching two new fragrances, Lovers Noir and Lovers Fleur. The Grammy-awarding artist returned to the M&S Bank Arena on Thursday, May 23, six years on from her last show at the venue in 2019. The Tension Tour kicked off in Australia and has made its way through Asia and eventually to the UK. Thousands gathered at the venue in Liverpool to dance the night away, with many decked out in sequins and Kylie Minogue t-shirts in celebration of the event. An unbelievable night of music, sequins and confetti, Kylie opened the incredible show with Lights Camera Action, followed by hits In Your Eyes and Get Outta My Way. Bridgerton actress Genevieve Chenneour has described how she fought off a thief attempting to snatch her mobile phone in a central London cafe. The Daily Mail newspaper has published footage of the actress – who plays Miss Clara Livingston in the hit Netflix period drama – sitting with her dog in a cafe in West London, being approached by a man who picked up her phone from next to her on the counter. The footage of the incident – which took place in February – shows Chenneour realising what had happened and accosting her thief with several blows before she got her phone back. She later recounted the whole incident lasted about five minutes, with her attacker pinned to the floor for most of the time. Chenneour also had the help of another customer in the cafe. The actress said on TikToktold that the thief had 'messed with the wrong girl' and she ITV morning show This Morning: 'I had a bit of a sixth sense that something wasn't quite right, as woman you have that kind of intuition. 'I don't know if I would advise anybody else to do it. 'I think I have very quick reactions, thanks to having three brothers growing up and I'm an aviated carded boxer. I think it just was an instinct, I also do a lot of fight training for work and acting… 'I thought that was a normal reaction and I read all the comments [online] and realised, actually, a lot of people would just let them take the phone.' 'It kind of went round the corner and it turned into a full-on scrap with two people [Boulares and his accomplice]. 'And I was threatened with being stabbed so it became a real matter, in my mind, of life and death. 'So, I did things like, I remember kicking him back with my leg to create space in case he had a weapon on him… It was just a life-changing, crazy moment.' The thief – who has been named as Zacariah Boulares – previously attacked TV host Aled Jones for his Rolex watch in 2023, and was given a youth detention, serving 14 months. He has since turned 18, hence he is now able to be named. A police officer appearing alongside Chenneour on the TV show stressed that everyone should be aware of potential thieves in the city's popular spots, with mobile phone theft on the rise. Former Chief Superintendent Parm Sandu said: 'Genevieve was very brave and I commend her for that but I would not recommend anybody, anybody fights back. It just isn't worth it. You don't know what these people are carrying.' ‘High in the Clouds' Shares Original Music, Early Art and a Beatles Reunion in Annecy Sneak Peek
Audiences at the Annecy Animation Festival got a first look at the upcoming CG-animated film 'High in the Clouds,' based on Paul McCartney's book of the same name that features the voices of McCartney, Ringo Starr, Lionel Richie, Céline Dion and more. Director Toby Genkel and project supervisor Christian De Vita joined Gaumont's president of global animation, Terry Kalagian, to talk about the arduous eight-year process of bringing the story to the screen as well as collaborating with McCartney on the film. 'It shouldn't be about me,' Genkel recalls McCartney saying early on. 'Yeah, OK, my name is all over the poster, but you get the point.' He sets out to find his mother's old bandmates – played by McCartney (as a walrus named McKenzie, obviously), Starr (a bird named Roy) and Richie (a bison named Gladstone) — and accidentally sparks a revolution. The panelists, as well as McCartney via a video message, made it very clear they didn't want 'High in the Clouds' to be a musical, but they did want it to be about the power of music. McCartney wrote 13 original songs for the film, which audiences got to hear a bit of during the presentation, but 'High in the Clouds' will only use 6 of them. Still, the panelists explained that the finished film would play different versions of the songs, changing them slightly according to the singer and the place in the story where they're played. Accompanying the songs is also a score by Academy Award winner Michael Giacchino. Though no finished footage was shown, Annecy audiences got a glimpse at concept art and some early renders by Studio 88. Genkel and De Vita talked about wanting the movie to feature anthropomorphic animals who would not have animal mannerisms but still feature some animal traits (like Wirral being quick and agile like a squirrel). Some of the concept art shown included Gretsch's empire, an island filled with industrial pipes in a shape resembling a Facehugger from the 'Alien' franchise, while the rebellious musicians live in a colorful city in the clouds made out of hot air balloons and airships. 'High in the Clouds' is aimed at family-friendly audiences of all ages, but it does feature themes of revolution and oppression, as well as freedom of expression. Balancing the message with a lighter tone was a challenge, particularly when it came to depicting Gretsch's army. Rather than actual soldiers, she is surrounded by an army of devoted fans who make their own uniforms and create gadgets for her to use. At the end of the presentation, audiences caught a video message from McCartney talking about his love of animation and how John Lennon inspired the main character of Wirral. They then got glimpses of McCartney and Starr recording lines for the film. McCartney said the film is a big homage to his first wife, Linda, who passed away in 1998 and inspired the character of Sugartail.
