Rehab employees broke 92-year-old dementia patient's bones, Colorado cops say
Two rehab center employees have been accused in the abuse that left a 92-year-old with broken bones, Colorado officials said.
On May 9, deputies were called to the Sky Ridge Medical Center after it was determined that a 92-year-old woman with dementia had two separate broken bones in her leg, according to a June 11 Facebook post by the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.
In an interview with the orthopedic trauma nursing manager of Sky Ridge Medical Center, officers learned the report completed by the Orchard Park Health Care Center was not consistent with the woman's injuries, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by ABC 7 Denver.
Orchard Park Health Care did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News on June 12.
The original report said the woman was found 'sitting in her wheelchair, screaming for help in terrible pain' and 'that no one had seen her fall' or knew what happened, officers said.
It was later determined that the woman's injuries could not have happened while she was in the wheelchair, as it was a 'clean break,' according to the arrest affidavit.
After a four-week long investigation, Patience Jackson, a certified nursing assistant with Orchard Park Health Care, was arrested on charges of criminal negligence, crimes against an at-risk person and complicity, officers said.
An active arrest warrant was issued for Zainab Namale, a licensed practical nurse with Orchard Park Health Care, officers said.
Jackson was booked into the Arapahoe County Detention Facility, officers said.
Arapahoe County is about a 50-mile drive southeast from Denver.

Teen girl killed by pack of neglected dogs as she tried to help them, neighbors say
A teenage girl was killed in a 'horrific' attack by a pack of neglected dogs she had been caring for, authorities say. Makayla Fortner, 15, was mauled to death 'by multiple dogs' in an enclosed area at a home in the community of Alexander, Arkansas. Around 30 rescues lived on the property. Deputies from the Saline County Sheriff's Office said they were alerted to the attack around 12:15 p.m. Wednesday and arrived to find the teen already dead.n Fortne had previously been helping to care for the animals as well as working to find them permanent homes, officials said. With the assistance of Benton Animal Services, deputies seized multiple dogs from the property. The dogs were a mix of pit bulls, pit bull crossbreeds, and hounds, Benton Animal Services spokesperson Matt Thibault told the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Officials told the newspaper that 14 dogs were euthanized in the wake of the incident. Investigators said they are looking into how the 'sudden and tragic' attack unfolded. Neighbors told ABC affiliate KATV said Fortner was attempting to feed the dogs before the deadly attack. Ralph Murphy said that he witnessed a deputy fire two shots from a pistol to disperse some of the animals as he headed towards the victim. 'And then he walked over and looked down and turned around and walked back, and so I moved and I saw a body on the ground,' he said. A friend of the victim's mother, Stephanie Wilkie, launched a GoFundMe page to support the family and help cover funeral expenses. 'On behalf of my dear friend Stephanie Wilkie, I am heartbroken to share the devastating news that her beloved 15-year-old daughter, Makayla Fortner, tragically passed away following a horrific dog attack,' organizer Erin Bowman wrote. 'This unimaginable loss has left her family in deep shock, grief, and emotional pain.' Bowman described Fortner as 'a beautiful, bright girl with the kindest soul who had so much life ahead of her.' Just days before the attack, Wilkie posted on Facebook that she and her daughter were looking after a litter of more than 40 puppies at the home of an elderly couple. 'So like normal, found myself in a hoarding situation of an older couple in their 80s with too many dogs,' she wrote on June 8, adding that there are 'puppies everywhere, 40+ and a litter born today.' Neighbors said that they have complained multiple times about the dogs being uncontrolled and running away from the property. 'These dogs were very vicious at the fence to the point that no one wanted to let their children walk to and from the bus stop,' White Oak Drive resident Heidi Clay said. "And if somebody had done something, then maybe this little girl would be alive.'

Letter near dead 18-year-old leads to accused killer, FL cops say. Man sentenced
The burned body of an 18-year-old woman was found in a field with a pile of items used to light her body on fire — including a letter that identified her accused killer, Florida authorities said. John Leonard Bowen, 49, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and tampering with evidence, and a judge sentenced him to life in prison following the death of Coyoete Kathren Cheyenne Turner in September 2023, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office announced June 12. Bowen's attorney declined to comment to McClatchy News on June 13. Bowen, a convicted sex offender, was in a relationship with Turner's aunt, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office told McClatchy News. Turner used to live with her aunt and Bowen, who was convicted of sex crimes against a child in 1994, according to an arrest report and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Deputies said they received a call from a citizen about a body in a peanut field on Sept. 3, 2023, and they found the remains of a young woman who had been burned, making it hard to identify her, McClatchy News previously reported. She didn't have any obvious wounds pointing to how she had died, but she had bruising on her face and burns on the upper half of her body, deputies with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office wrote in an arrest report. Deputies said they found burned garbage underneath the woman that had been used to light the fire, including a coloring book, a package of diapers and a bag of trash. But they also found a letter and an envelope, according to the sheriff's office. Investigators went to the address on the envelope and learned Bowen, then 47, was living there but hadn't updated his sex offender registration with his current address, deputies said. They told him to come to the station to update his registration soon, according to the report. As investigators worked to identify the victim, the sheriff's office posted on Facebook about the discovery of an unidentified body, prompting Turner's mother to call law enforcement, according to deputies. She told investigators she hadn't heard from her daughter in 24 hours, deputies said. Fingerprints confirmed the victim was the missing 18-year-old, according to the report. When Bowen went to the sheriff's office Sept. 7 to update his sex offender registration, he confirmed to law enforcement he had falsified his address, and he was arrested in connection with violating his registration requirements, deputies said. Investigators said they asked him about Turner as well, and he changed his story before eventually telling them he was there when she died. But he tried to implicate others, saying someone else got behind the wheel of his car and ran her over, according to the report. From his statements, investigators said they pieced together that Bowen struck Turner with his car, and while she was unconscious, he choked her and engaged in sex acts with her body. Then to conceal what happened, he tried to light her body on fire using items from his car, including the key piece of mail, deputies said. He was seen on surveillance footage at a nearby gas station shortly before 2 a.m. changing his clothes in his car before going inside the convenience store, according to investigators. The medical examiner concluded Turner's cause of death was trauma, according to the report. 'How can I trust people when it's our friends and families that done this to our family?' Turner's mother, Eleanor Houston, told WJAX in November 2023. She told WTLV her daughter loved everyone and 'wanted to have a beautiful life.' Columbia County is in north Florida on the border of Georgia.
